Which completely inoffensive names do you absolutely hate for no justifiable reason?

I will start.

Francis.

Loathe it. Couldn't say why really. There are no bad connotations - it's neither 'chav' nor 'toff'. It's not made-up or too-trendy or old-fashioned. I couldn't say that the sound of it is awful. It doesn't remind me someone who bullied me at school. It's not even boring. I just fucking hate that name. Whenever I am introduced to a new baby called Francis, my reaction is always: "But why? For pity's sake, why? Out of all the possible names available, you chose Francis? You have some seriously terrible taste there, people." "Gosh, how lovely."

Same goes for Christopher. And Jenny.

Perfectly inoffensive names. Could give no good reason for my antipathy whatsoever.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Bluelights sorry you feel that way. I wouldn't. I wasn't aiming at you with my comment, just interested by all the 'this won't end well' comments. I didn't want you to think I was getting at you. Smile

SomersetONeil · 12/11/2012 22:51

My own name has been listed here, so I feel I can now wade in... Grin

Ruby
Scarlett
Daisy
Poppy
Harvey
Alfie
Archie
Lily
Denise
Maureen
Bertha
Lisa
Tina
Karen
Angela
Mark (why, just why would you give you a child a monosyllabic name which means 'stain'?)

Wallison · 12/11/2012 22:51

Why are so many girls called Tegan/Teagan/T'ee'ghaene these days? I don't like that name either.

Wallison · 12/11/2012 22:50

I can't stand it either, BikeRunSki, but I shouldn't have put it on this thread as I do have a reason. A tenuous prissy reason, but a reason nonetheless.

steppemum · 12/11/2012 22:49

I am teacher and some of the names I hate are definitely due to teaching.
I could never name a child Daniel for this reason (shudders)

Called my dd2 after a little ray of sunshine I taught one year, possibly one of my all time favourite children. her name is quite old fashioned and serious, but not to me any more, it is the name of a bunch of giggles.
Actually dd2 is pretty much like her namesake in character too

BikeRunSki · 12/11/2012 22:46

Charlotte

I understand that everyone else in the world loves it. I hate it, for not reason at all.

BluelightsAndSirens · 12/11/2012 22:45

Celtic it's because I'm not used to seeing It I suppose, as said in the thread everyone will say oh lovely and thing fucking gross.

Seeing I hate the name Bob when your name is Bob is a bit yuck, I don't like to think anyone would judged me because they had known a Bob who was a nob so now I am one 2.

Flojo1979 · 12/11/2012 22:45

I like Alice, though wouldn't call me DD it else I'd sing "who the f...
I like Francis, spelt either way, for either a girl or boy.
Don't like Richard, was an awful boy at school.

Anonymumous · 12/11/2012 22:45

Lots of people don't like my daughter's name, but that is because they have no taste and are not worth knowing anyway are boring.

Wallison · 12/11/2012 22:44

Charlotte. I was at school with a girl called Charlotte and her parents gave her chocolate every day in her packing-up even though the school had a policy not to and they kicked up a right old fuss and carried on doing it when they were told to stop. This was generally considered shocking behaviour. She had sticky-out teeth and when she ate her chocolate it all stuck to the front of her sticky-out teeth and looked bleee while she talked with her mouth full (of chocolate).

I realise that none of this is her fault.

FayKnights · 12/11/2012 22:44

Oh dear my name and my pfb's name have made an appearance already

Alisvolatpropiis · 12/11/2012 22:38

I like Alice but prefer the older Alys spelling

CelticPromise · 12/11/2012 22:36

I don't get why anyone would be upset at someone not liking your/your child's name. Names are so very personal, I can only think of one or two friends that have chosen names I would even consider. I can make polite noises when necessary! I'm sure lots of people hate DS's name, I don't care because I love it.

MaryAstor · 12/11/2012 22:36

No, no. I hate Frances too.

I may hate it slightly less than Francis, but that's only because of Dirty Dancing.

steppemum · 12/11/2012 22:34

Actually I would have to agree with her about Francis for a boy.

LOve Alice though, never thought of the lice as it isn't pronounced that way

steppemum · 12/11/2012 22:30

yes we are Frances not Francis. I kind of asusmed op meant both, but maybe not, maybe it is only the boys name she dislikes! We are redeemed ! Our name is not Hated!!!

RobinSparkles · 12/11/2012 22:30

I LOVE Francis/Frances btw. My GD was Francis (Frank). Lovely man!

MrsSchadenfreude · 12/11/2012 22:30

Emily. I know it is a perfectly pleasant, if overly popular name, but I just can't stand it. I also loathe Amanda as I have never met an Amanda or Mandy that I like. Conversely, I love the name Ruth, but until recently had never met one that I liked (and the one I do like is a MNer).

picnicbasketcase · 12/11/2012 22:29

Alice, because of the 'lice' part.
Isobel, because of the 'sob'

There's probably loads more like that. I notice that part of a name is unappealing in some way and then it's all I can see in it.

I don't like any ending in -bel, -ine or -ette either.

RobinSparkles · 12/11/2012 22:28

Yeah but surely you don't like Francis because it sounds ugly to you or you hate the way it looks on paper. There has to be a reason, however small.

I'm not keen on the name Gertrude. It just sounds ugly to me - any name with rude in it just sounds yucky to me. It might not be much of a reason but it's still a reason. :o (I know that I'm just being awkward)

I apologise to any mothers of little Gerties out there or any Gertrudes that I may have offended.

sonniboo · 12/11/2012 22:26

There IS always a reson for not liking something, isn't there? Personally I don't like cutesy nicknames like Archie, Alfie, Artie, Poppy, Evie, Ellie, Molly. I prefer more 'solid' names.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 12/11/2012 22:16

I like Frances. Apart from Frances the badger, doing dances etc . Makes me want to kill.

fluffacloud · 12/11/2012 22:14

Imogen - I know 2 lovely little girls called Imogen but I still can't stand it.

I'll apologise now for the offence that I'm bound to cause. Sorry Grin

IWipeArses · 12/11/2012 22:14

steppe, surely they have Frances?

Anonymumous · 12/11/2012 22:14

Ooh, I hate Reece too. I put my friend off that one by saying it sounded like Grease. Weird name...
