Beam me up Scotty ...

Hey there :I am 22 weeks and my DH and I have decided that if our baby is a boy we will call him Scotty. With a Y. Not as a nickname. It will be on his birth certificate. However certain members of our family have said point blank they wont be calling the baby Scotty but will call him Scott as they don't like the name? Do I put my foot down? I have been very reasonable as the people who dont like the name are the grandparents ... I even asked them to choose middle names so they have been very much involved and I thought I was being quite nice but now feel like I have no rights in naming my own child? Help!

Your child your choice but I think it would sound silly for an adult. Much better to put Scott on the birth certificate and call him Scotty. That way he has a choice.

oh dear,strife before your ds is even born!! By all means say that his proper name is scotty but i don't think you can really insist that the family cannot say scott as a nickname! TBH i'm with your family, scotty sounds like a name for a highland terrier dog or guinea pig, but everyone to their own!
Good luck and what have you chosen for a DD?

You are naming a person,not a baby or a dog.
Bear in mind that they will have to live with the name for ever.

Geranium3 DD will be Seleanah ... pronounced Selena incase you were wondering lols :D Thanks for your advice.

I should probably add that the inlaws are lucky that DS's middle names wont be Tiberius Wolfgang :D

I know a little boy who's mum insisted Scotty was his proper name, and that everyone should call him that. By the end of pre-school the boy decided his name was babyish and he is now called Scott. His mum now reminds everyone to call him Scott not Scotty.

I've no idea what name is on his birth certificate - but given how young the boy was when he wanted the "grown-up" version of his name, I rather hope they registered him as Scott.

Thats a really odd way to spell Selena. You know your dd will spend her whole life correcting people?

I have spent my whole life correcting people on how to spell my name, my husbands had to do the same. It doesnt bother us if people are a bit dim :)

What SoupDragon said. I think Wolfgang is a far better name than Scotty as a first name, at least when he is a man he will have a grown ups name.

Tiberius is a great name, I'm less keen on Wolfgang. I'm also not that keen on Scott or Scotty, but if you love it, then go for it. So what if some people/relatives shorten to Scott? He can still be Scotty on his b.c.

Are you trying to disguise the fact that you are naming your child after Selina Scott? (80s TV presenter/newsreader)

You can't insist that people use the silly name you choose for your child rather than a nickname. Well you can, but you can't expect them to listen.

Lots of people say their families hate pre-chosen names so you're not alone. Even when the baby arrives there's often a stubborn streak in relatives and they'll deliberately mispronounce or misspell the name that's picked.
You've got to grow a thick skin when you have DCs anyway, good luck, your child, your choice of name.
