Confirmation name. Unusual is good.

DD1 needs a good, Catholic saint's name for her confirmation. She would like something different, but honourable.

Fidelma.

AuntAda · 09/11/2012 08:38

Oh, and how could I forget: Perpetua.

I am on a roll here. Grin

sashh · 09/11/2012 02:51

AuntAda

I went to school with two of the names on your list.

Saint Catherine of Alexandria, the patron saint of lace makers?

I've just googled Dymphna - I don't think I would pick that

TheWoollybacksWife · 08/11/2012 23:26

Here you go St Phoebe

pikesy1 · 08/11/2012 23:22

Haha I want to change my own name to Ethelreda! Is Phoebe a saint? #badcatholic

Maybe it was St Ethelburga of Barking( who was Northumbrian!)

Wandastartup · 08/11/2012 23:14

Think I've misremembered her from my days of choosing. Can't find that name in the lists!

MaryZezItsOnlyJustNovember · 08/11/2012 23:13

Oh God [sigh]

The memories.

The embarrassment.

The weird and ugly saints names that are allowed Shock

Try here They are (almost) all awful.

Wandastartup · 08/11/2012 23:10

Hinnyburga( Northumbrian I think)

DIddled · 08/11/2012 23:08

Celine?

UltraBOF · 08/11/2012 23:07

Genevieve was a vegetarian, if that helps.

UltraBOF · 08/11/2012 23:05

Hahaaaaa, loving the stories behind Phoebe and Ethelreda Grin

mmmmsleep · 08/11/2012 23:04

Do google her...certainly an honorable girl

mmmmsleep · 08/11/2012 23:03

Ethelreda...patron saint of teenage virgin girls. Tee hee that made the bishop blush when i told him who she was. Not a bad thing to aim for?!

TheWoollybacksWife · 08/11/2012 23:02

I honestly have no idea what DD2 told school as the reason she chose Helen. It is highly unlikely that she told them it was because her father was born in St Helens and is a massive Saints fan

Her friend chose Phoebe - because her older sisters had chosen Rachel and Monica.

stifnstav · 08/11/2012 22:59

I had a male saint's name and so did my sister, so it might not have to be a female saint that she chooses.

DrSeuss · 08/11/2012 22:58

A friend wrote her thesis on St Hildegard.

St Hilda is big in these parts.

pikesy1 · 08/11/2012 22:58

She loves Genevieve, I'm just not sure I can concoct a sufficiently Catholic motive for it.

Had to go and google Sexburger.

As you were.

mysteryfairy · 08/11/2012 22:54

When my DSs got confirmed I noticed a couple of girls took Anastasia which I had never realised was a saint's name. I think I would have loved that when I was 14.

I went for Helena as I was a massive Evelyn Waugh fan. I haven't read his Helena novel for a long time but still very happy with my choice.

wigglesrock · 08/11/2012 22:54

I girl I knew went with Paschal (I'm not sure how she spelt it), I'm a Margaret, was she born on a Saints Day with a decent name?

UltraBOF · 08/11/2012 22:54

Ooh, Cecilia is lovely- I think my mum chose that because of the music connection.

I think it's nice to go with an association, rather than just the sound of the name. It's a bit more reflective, which is the point, and it's not like you ever actually use the name.

pikesy1 · 08/11/2012 22:52

The school would pound her face if she mentioned fashion but funny thought!

The image here, top right is what I remember from my book of saints.

UltraBOF · 08/11/2012 22:50

I was going to say Genevieve- I fancied that one myself. My mum turned her nose up though, and I went with Theresa, her mum's name- there are a few saints with that name, all with beautiful stories attached. I particularly liked the one who ascended into Heaven as roses showered down.
