Hunter for a boy?

Hunter is a family name and I really like it.

But is it too 'hard'?! Worried it sounds a bit too much like an army general!

Unfortunately, what a lot of hunters "who go after what they want without giving in" happen to want is the right to bear arms (I'm American). (I'm referring to MolotovBomb's post here, but perhaps, with that name, s/he wouldn't be expected to object to a few firearms).

That's true @sonniebonnie! A name does become the person and you are right about ungraceful Graces! I think of Daisy as a very feminine name and I've known a few unfeminine Daisies!

I just like it because it's strong, a family name, not very common and makes me think of a go getter and a 'provider'

I think the name has wider connotations than just hunting/killing. For example, a hunter implies an individual who goes after what s/he wants without giving in; a strong, reliable, individualistic character. The mythological 'Diana the huntress' did not surrender to the wishes of men.

Hunter is a lovely name. Strong, masculine and not overused. I don't think you need any 'stronger' personality than for a name like Henry or Harrison. In fact, I don't think you 'need' any personality for a name - a name just becomes the person. I know loads of ungraceful Graces for example.

I hate it, but I hate hunting. Why would anyone want to name a child after the idea of killing?

Haha that's funny because my husband is an accountant! He would be so proud if his first born son was an accountant too!

I've always liked strong, masculine names. I think it's better to go for a strong name and have a gentle son than a strong character and be stuck with a wimpish boyish name...

GREAT name!! My nephew is a Hunter and whilst we were all a bit Hmm at first, it grew on us and I now love it! Go for it!

I don't massively dislike it but you do definitely need a strong personality to carry this one off. Could you use it as a middle name?

Baby Hunter would need a strong personality to carry the name well, I think. Not one for a gentle boy.
