Warning: hyphenated name question (Something-Joy)

MrsJellybye · 04/11/2012 18:13

Title says it all, really. I know the views on hyphenated names but I'm still thinking about one. Blush

I'm wondering about something I could hyphenate with Joy, a family name.

Or should I just not go there?

Amity-Joy?

(Or, when people hear Amity, do you think of the Amityville Horror films?)

Pasiphae · 07/11/2012 14:43

I think Keziah-Joy works really well.
(sorry if repeats)
Audrina-Joy, Aurelia-Joy, Dahlia-Joy, Mary-Joy, Lola-Joy,Betsy-Joy or Betty-Joy, Luna-Joy, Madga-Joy, Martha-Joy, Sally-Joy, Mila-Joy, Nina-Joy, Phaedra-Joy, Sadie-Joy, Eliza-Joy?

Woozley · 07/11/2012 12:54

I think Joy is lovely but would personally put it as a middle name rather than hyphenated. Genevieve Joy is my favourite but not hyphenated.

bakerbakerfairycaker · 07/11/2012 12:45

I know a hyphen joy.

They are known as Lj.

I think J is an easy second letter.

So be prepared for a

Tj
Lj
JJ

etc.

Gwennan · 07/11/2012 12:32

I like a lot of your choices individually but, when hyphenated with Joy, they became awfully long. I realise Joy is a short name but, in my experience, names 3 syllables or longer are generally shortened (e.g. Josephine > Josie, Victoria > Vicky, Alexandra --> Alex, etc). It seems to me that it would defeat the point of hyphenating if your daughter Cordelia-Joy was mostly known as Cordy or Cora or your Keziah-Joy was known as Kizzy. On that basis, you're left with Clara-Joy, which I think works well as a combination. I think it sounds very uplifting.

In my opinion, I feel that if you're going to go to the bother of hyphenating your child's names, you ought to treat it as a 'double name' and refer to them by it - otherwise just call them Lily Sue or Jesse James. I don't understand mums and dads who name their children Jesse-James or Lily-Sue and only ever call them Lily and jesse.

I haven't read the whole thread so I apologise if any of these are off the mark but how about: Sophie-Joy, Lucy-Joy, Molly-Joy, Megan-Joy, Alice-Joy, Zara-Joy, Emma-Joy, Lauren-Joy, Bridget-Joy, Leah-Joy, Margot-Joy, Heather-Joy, Layla-Joy?

YoullScreamAboutItOneDay · 07/11/2012 12:19

Fair enough. I tend to tread carefully with spelling in case it is a standard spelling for another country, but with an H is much better Smile

MrsJellybye · 07/11/2012 10:30

No Scream, only a typo! I agree completely- it should have the H. (Despite my hyphen fixation, I'm a purist and traditionalist when it comes to name spellings; unfortunately my IT skills are less evolved) Smile

YoullScreamAboutItOneDay · 07/11/2012 09:39

Isn't it Keziah traditionally? Is there a reason you would drop the H?

MrsJellybye · 07/11/2012 09:20

basking I do like Clara-Joy. I also like Delphine-Joy, and Delphine generally, but that damn donkey on Peppa Pig has ruined it for me.

My current faves are:

Cordelia-Joy

Seraphine-Joy

Clara-Joy

Kezia-Joy

OP posts:
baskingseals · 06/11/2012 21:52

Miranda-Joy

Clara-Joy

Susannah-Joy

Katerina-Joy

Delphine-Joy

Thalia-Joy

Natalia-Joy

do you like any of these?

love Genevieve, but don't think it sounds quite right with Joy.

MrsJellybye · 06/11/2012 10:04

Just a quick one as I'm at work this morning: the baby is due in early January (and it's def a girl). That was part of the reason for liking Genevieve- I'm not remotely religious but 3 Jan (the most likely delivery date; will be scheduled delivery for various reasons) is St Genevieve's day, I think.....

OP posts:
Ohsiena · 06/11/2012 09:31

Flora-Joy

Elsie-Joy

OP when is this baby due?

MolotovBomb · 06/11/2012 07:12

I agree, but I think that hyphens get an unusual amount of criticism on MN.

There seems to be a paradox between MN and RL, most notably on Baby Names, where names that would get a 'sorry, what did you say the baby's name is?' response in RL are adored on here. Whereas, popular, cute, trendy, hyphens, etc are usually vilified or generate some other strong response.

Definitely something to do with the nature of a discussion forum. Also something to do with name geeks (like myself) frequenting this board.

Bunbaker · 06/11/2012 06:43

"she never has any stick about her DDs name in RL. Only ever very sincere compliments. I've only encountered such harsh negativity about '-' on MN."

I think it is because in real life most people are more polite and less likely to want to upset someone. We all hide behind the anonymity of nicknames on here and are a little more forthcoming.

I still don't like hyphenated names though. The only child I know with a hyphenated name has dropped the second name.

Anskabel · 05/11/2012 22:40

I know a Lucy-Joy

Ohsiena · 05/11/2012 22:14

Cornelian is gorgeous, and with Joy as a middle name is lovely but if you're wanting the whole name to be said every time, it's too much IMO.

I think it needs to sound almost like its one name when the two names run together.

If you like Eliza, I'm thinking you like the Victorian parlour maid style names, so how about:

Kitty-Joy

Or how about:

Agatha-Joy

Or

Agnes-joy

Or, how about tHe ultimate in revival big statement names:

Gloria-Joy- that's a stupendous name Grin and would indicate you were rather pleased about her arrival.

MrsJellybye · 05/11/2012 21:44

Thanks Scream, the whistling explosives are tailing off a bit now. Replaced by sirens and the dulcet thrones of DD1 snoring on my pillow. Oh, Joy. Grin

YoullScreamAboutItOneDay · 05/11/2012 21:33

Hope it calms down for you soon. We're London and it's quite quiet here.

Go with Cordelia. You know you want to........Grin.

MrsJellybye · 05/11/2012 21:30

Ha Scream I was just having a shower to step away from the large glass of wine calm down when I remembered Cordelia-Joy. I do think it's very pretty. And I like the meaning, too- the heart of a lion version, rather than necessarily the Shakespearean connotation.

I'm going to sleep on it. If my ear drums don't explode Smile

YoullScreamAboutItOneDay · 05/11/2012 21:07

Argh, missing words.

This is what you get when you continue debating after I solved...

Fellatia-Joy will not thank.

And she could be CJ. Officially the best character ever.

YoullScreamAboutItOneDay · 05/11/2012 21:06

MrsJelly - Well, this is what you get after I solved your problem hours ago with Cordelia. Which is officially the best name in the world that I haven't been able to use.

MrsJellybye · 05/11/2012 20:58

*the aforementioned. Who is now in fact asleep on my typing arm.

MrsJellybye · 05/11/2012 20:58

You're on a roll Siena! I love Eliza, with or without Joy, and had it on the list for thenaforementioned DD1 nBut XH said no. DD1 is another El name instead.

OP posts:
MrsJellybye · 05/11/2012 20:55

I do like Clara-Joy.

OP posts:
Ohsiena · 05/11/2012 20:55
