Esther or Etta?

Me and DH have been pretty sold on Esther if it's a girl but are now considering Etta (bit less old fashioned?!). What do you think?

Also middle name would probably be Grace - so Esther Grace - work ok?

Love Etta. I know a not very nice Esther, so that influences me against her name. Also love a name I don't know how to spell, but phonetically is Arietta.

aufaniae · 01/11/2012 12:25

*list! Bloody phone.

aufaniae · 01/11/2012 12:24

Both are lovely, but Etta is my favourite. It would be on my lust but we can't have it for family name reasons.

Dogsmom · 31/10/2012 16:04

Esther - she's a biblical queen and means 'star'.

Snazzyspookyandscary · 30/10/2012 07:50

Esther! Lovely.

jaffacakehips · 30/10/2012 07:46

Etta James real name was Jamesetta Hmm

Another vote for Esther!

nooka · 30/10/2012 04:55

The end of my name is 'etta' and I've never even considered using it as a nn. To me it doesn't feel enough to be a whole name, but then I like names with at least a couple of nn options.

nwthree · 29/10/2012 22:04

I've just had a baby Esther, so it gets my vote. Everyone comments on how lovely her name is (and I think they're being sincere...).

Etta is surely short for Henrietta whereas Esther is a standalone name.

StrawWars · 29/10/2012 20:38

Etta has exponentially more lewd school nickname potential.

Feckbox · 29/10/2012 20:36

prefer Esther

HaggisMcNeeps · 29/10/2012 20:31

Damn you strikeout fail.

HaggisMcNeeps · 29/10/2012 20:31

Esther IMO.
Etta makes me think: The girl etta sandwich. But only because I'm a lazyspeaker-- scouser.

katiecubs · 29/10/2012 20:22

Yep am certainly confused now! I love both though and would be happy with either :)

Effie Grace

Ettie Grace

GoldPlatedNineDoors · 29/10/2012 18:30

I dislike Esther, but love Hester. Equally love Etta and adding it to a list of potential future DD names.

kige · 29/10/2012 18:28

The terrorist group ETA has the same pronounciation as Etta and for this reason I would not use it.

Also, I would think that when asked for her name and Etta replies down the phone or whatever, a lot of people will reply with What? Pardon?

If you really like Etta why don't you call her Henrietta and use Etta as a nickname.

StarsGhostTail · 29/10/2012 18:26

I'm assuming ETA and Etta are pronounced the same, Unless it's pronounced Ee-ta (Eat Her)?

I need google
