Eeek! Little face doesn't match name we had picked out

Uh oh! Gave birth three days ago and the name that we had thought of for our little boy, now that he is born, doesn't seem right any more, and am not convinced by any of our back ups either! We live in Spain, my husband is Spanish, I am English so we were looking for a name that sounded nice (if not the same) in both languages. We had thought of Oliver, which although is really common in the UK, is still quite different here, but is recognised and easily pronounced. But now we are just not seeing it as he looks much more of a Latin baby than English (husband has stamped out all my genes!)
The other names we had were Bruno, Dario, Hugo and Ruben which are all recognisable names here but am not 100% convinced by any of them.
He looks like a Jack or a Barnaby (he's a strapping little fellow!) but these names are too English for my DH. Neither is he keen on too Biblical sounding names. And I am not keen on the really common names here like Pablo or Javier because they don't feel special enough (am crazy in love!)
Any ideas / suggestions REALLY welcomed
Thanks!

Roman?

EdsRedeemingQualities · 31/10/2012 10:11

I knew a man from the Basque once whose name was Jose Luis - everyone called him Pepe.

It's the only Spanish name I can think of, sorry! It's sweet though...he sounds like a proper lovely baby x

Lovelylace · 31/10/2012 10:01

Love Raphael, Bruno, just makes me think of the film Bruno, with Sacha Baron Cohen Wink

sashh · 31/10/2012 05:45

I've worked alongside a Matias and a Federico, both great guys.

I've also met an Argentinian called Daniel, would that work?

Emilio, Ernesto?

BittenInfectedCorpseDodger · 31/10/2012 01:35

No suggestions, just sympathy. Grin

My DS (now 7) was going to be an Oliver - right up until the moment he was born where he became a Jack.

We had originally discounted the name because although we both loved it, it was 'too popular'

7 years on, I hate the fact he is one of 3 in his class, but there are also 3 Bradleys, which I wouldn't have guessed.

Love most of the names on this thread Smile

MoelFammau · 31/10/2012 01:26

My DD was born with very dark hair. She's now a curly strawberry blonde. Just sayin'!

emblosion · 30/10/2012 20:51

Ramon?

KenDoddsDadsDog · 26/10/2012 20:29

Oh and Gabriel! Love that in Spanish.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 26/10/2012 20:28

Matteo or Rafael

baskingseals · 26/10/2012 20:27

love Rafael.

also love love Tiago. one of the best names ever imho

congratulations on your lovely boy

pipoca · 26/10/2012 19:40

DS is Nicolás (we live in Spain). Nico for short.

HolyAutumnGoldBatman · 26/10/2012 17:37

Love Matteo and Arturo

vamosbebe · 26/10/2012 17:30

Simon - much nicer in Spanish as the accent is on the 'mon' part. We considered it for our half Spanish-half British DS, also Tomas (accent on 'mas') they sound nicer in Spanish. We finally went for Oscar, I couldn't give two bloody hoots how popular it is in UK. Loved Felix (Feh-lix in Spanish pronunciation) and Barnaby (Bernabe in Spanish), but we kind of chickened-out of it for being maybe a little 'out there' which in hindsight was effing ridiculous as our DS is SUCH a total Barnaby!!!

I also love:
Leon ('lay-on')
Ruben
Bruno

and Catalan names (depending on your DH's love-hate relationship with Catalunya):
Roc
Pau (Paul/peace)

I'd veto Isaac as I don't like the pronunciation here: i-zak

Diamond7 · 26/10/2012 17:14

Arturo? (Spanish version of Arthur)

thegreylady · 26/10/2012 17:12

Matteo
Lucca
Tomas
Raphael

ExitPursuedByAaaaaarGhoul · 26/10/2012 14:46

Another vote for Raphael here.
Or what about Tomas or Tollo?

Congratulations.

squoosh · 26/10/2012 14:44

Bruno is very manly.

OwedToAutumn · 26/10/2012 14:43

Dario and Bruno are "strapping" names. Particularly Bruno.

shinyblackgrape · 26/10/2012 13:15

I do but that is because cousin's husband is tall and well built and dark. He is always known as rafa though.

I think Rafa and Sebastian are the best. I do like Seve but concerned it is the Spanish equivalent of Cuthbert. OP, let me know what your DH thinks of Seve out if interest if you ever get two seconds to come back!

Ps - what about Nico or Luca?

Snazzyspookyandscary · 26/10/2012 13:00

It is but I don't think of it as a 'strapping little fellow' name!

squoosh · 26/10/2012 11:40

Oh Raphael/Rafa is gorgeous!

amck5700 · 26/10/2012 09:49

Would Ciar/Keir work? - that means swarthy and dark :)

Thats what we named my 2nd son as he was dark with olive skin - the fact that the little begger decided to go blond is another matter! He is darkening again now that he is 11 :)

turniptop · 26/10/2012 09:38

Izan?
Tadeo?

Maybe go for Olivier instead of Oliver - still recognisable and pronounceable in english, but more mediterranean sounding to suit his swarthy looks.

I agree though that they can change a lot in their looks from newborn, so perhaps just go for the name you like and don't worry so much about what suits. My girl was born looking much more like her Dad, with straight dark hair, but now has fair curly hair like me and a mix of our features.

Barbafamiily · 26/10/2012 07:59

And notnowcato that made me laugh. You are right, what is big and burly at a few days old might not be further down the track!

Wow, thanks very much all! Some great suggestions and I am going to do as you suggest, ignore all the "what is his name" questions and give it more time. I was in a panic because officially her you have 8 days to register a birth. But having spoken to the register they say that if you justify it you can have up to 30. And the justification is enough just me saying that I couldn't make it in before hand!
Thanks again
