What's your mum called?

Thinking about the cyclical nature of names - those that I used to think of as awful 'granny names' when I was younger - Florence, Edith, Mabel etc - are wildly popular now.

I wonder what the equivalent names will be for our grandchildren and great-grandchildren?

My mum is called Christine (I am in my mid 30s).

Purpleprickles · 17/10/2012 22:42

Marcella but known by all as Marcie. I'm mid 30's. She hated it at school apparently as it was so unusual.

Pleasenomorepeppa · 17/10/2012 22:42

DM is called Ann Edith & she was born in 1946. MIL is Sandra & I think she was born in the early 40's. I'm 34 & can't really see Sandra being a popular name anytime soon, although DD has Ann as her middle name!

squoosh · 17/10/2012 22:42

Peggy. She is 68.

Inneedofbrandy · 17/10/2012 22:41

My upstairs neighbor is an Edna, she's 92.

SorrelForbes · 17/10/2012 22:40

Edna. However, she says the only other Ednas she's ever met have all been about 15 years older than her. She was born in the 1940s.

My mum is called Sally. She hates it and prays it never comes back into fashion.

She would habeas disowned me if I had named either of the girls after her.

OwedToAutumn · 17/10/2012 22:36

emsyj · 17/10/2012 22:36

I think Ruth is one of those names that's always rumbling along somewhere, but it hasn't been one of the top names since early 1900s - we liked that it is relatively uncommon without being unheard of/outlandish.

Margot was very very unusual when DMum was growing up and she was told by her teacher at school that her name was Margaret and there's no such name as Margot. Hmm

tazzy65 · 17/10/2012 22:35

elizabeth, lizzie for short i am in my early 40's

NoMoreMarbles · 17/10/2012 22:35

Siobhan :) I am 30.

prayingmantisgroupie · 17/10/2012 22:33

Carol. I'm late 30's and I still don't think it's come back round yet! My late MIL was Joan, she'd be 84 now. Come to think of it, I don't think that's a name that's ever come back into fashion either.

MrsBungleBear · 17/10/2012 22:32

My DM was called Linda. I am mid 30's. She was born in 1955, think it was popular name in the 50's. My DMIL is called Ann.

EvilTwins · 17/10/2012 22:31

I don't think it ever went out of fashion, did it? As a child I had a friend called Ruth and now have two close friends with that name. Mum used to be a primary teacher- she taught a Ruth who would be in her late teens now.

CiderwithBuda · 17/10/2012 22:31

Well she is known as Sheila. But her actual name is Julia. Very weird as her aunt who is the same age as her is also called Sheila! We have no idea why they both ended up being Sheila!

I am early late forties.
