Is Maud too miserable?

My DH loves it, and I'm drawn to it, but not sure if it's too 'down' as a name? I can't say it with a happy voice iyswim, but on the other hand I think it's different and classy. I have an Imogen already and think they go nicely together. Thoughts?

I don't like it without the e, but with the e, I do.

ShipsCat · 20/10/2012 15:10

I love it! It's DD's middle name Smile

IslaValargeone · 20/10/2012 15:04

Makes me think of Maud Adams, beautiful!

IceBergJam · 20/10/2012 15:01

Reminds me of morbid and dead bodies im afraid. Love Juliet .

rubydoobydoo · 20/10/2012 14:46

There was a Maud in my family around the turn of the century, I remember my gran showing me a photo of a group of women and pointing to the most miserable stuffy looking one and saying "and that's Aunt Maud...."

So the name will always make me think of miserable old Great Great Aunt Maud - I also imagine that anyone with the name only appears in black and white!

peppapigpants · 20/10/2012 14:11

I had an auntie maud, she would have been born around 1910. It wasn't her real name, but a family nickname. She was a sandwich short of a picnic and had a fantastic moustache Grin

ditzydrawers · 20/10/2012 10:31

I prefer Maud with the 'e' on the end..somehow seems more feminine. But Maeve and Imogen go really well together. Beautiful.

ComeIntoTheSpookyGardenMaud · 20/10/2012 01:12

I have grown to love the name, that's why I haven't name-changed for quite some time.

JudeFawley · 19/10/2012 22:39

I love Maude.

But, for some reason, I do think it would suit a dog with droopy jowls.

mewkins · 19/10/2012 22:32

It sounds too much like mold and brings to mind a very smoggy and dingey part of east London. Sorry, you did ask!

WhiteHairReally · 18/10/2012 20:28

LOVE Maud. My children are now quite elderly (18 and 16) but second one would have been Helena Maud, if he'd been a girl. If I'd had a third, I'd have had a Maud - nn Maudie -she's definitely a little girl with character.

The definition of 'fashionable old lady names' change as the ladies themselves age. My daughter thinks Vera is a lovely name.

outtolunchagain · 18/10/2012 17:44

My ds's friend Maud is definitely not serious and drippy , she is lively and bouncy and quote my ds " great fun":)

.A beautiful poem by Tennyson

Come into the garden, Maud,
For the black bat, night, has flown,
Come into the garden, Maud,
I am here at the gate alone ;
And the woodbine spices are wafted abroad,
And the musk of the rose is blown

it is quite a lovely name but quite serious and sombre too. Hmmmm not sure to be honest.

A1980 · 18/10/2012 12:20

I don't like Maud. it's gloomy sounding.

How about Mary? It's traditional without sounding like a granny name and not popular at all. she'll be the only one in her class.

squoosh · 17/10/2012 17:39

Ooooh I don't like Maud. It's got a very droopy sound and it reminds me of things that smell old and dusty.

zxcv123 · 17/10/2012 15:32

Really dislike Maud. Looks like a combination of Mad and Mud to me.

I like Maud :) but I have Maebh (same as Maeve) and I LOVE the name. It really stayed with me while I was pregnant and I wasn't sure if it was too old fashioned in the same way, but I'm really pleased with it so...

either choose Maeve or if Maud seems a good choice I don't think you'll regret it

thing1andthing2 · 16/10/2012 22:16

How about Aude? A French name. I knew a girl called that and always liked it.

GorierTechnicolarghhhhh · 16/10/2012 22:14

Just go the whole hog and call her Mona

CiderwithBuda · 16/10/2012 22:10

ShowofBloodyStumps - yes indeed, a very special name.

OP - a Mumsnetter lost her lovely DD to SIDS a few years ago. Her name was Maude. There were Mile for Maude walks held to raise money for SIDs. Quite a few of us old-timers will remember the name fondly.

BoyMeetsWorld · 16/10/2012 22:05

That's v true about adding an E...suddenly looks French & kitsch

MacMac123 · 16/10/2012 21:55

Add an 'e' and it's not miserable
Maude

Think it's cool

exoticfruits · 16/10/2012 21:52

Any of your other names are better than Maud.

thegreylady · 16/10/2012 21:44
