What do you think of this name for a girl? Is the nickname Alex inevitable? Many thanks

Go for it but ensure you choose a female sounding shortening if you do... something like Alexa is nice or Lexie.

Alex isnt great IMO

schmalex · 10/10/2012 20:32

I'm an Alexandra, always get called Alex (despite trying to insist on Alexandra for a while). I never used to like it when I was little, but as an adult I love it.

Wish I'd thought of calling myself Sasha though. Maybe I should reinvent myself!

TurtlenamedMack · 10/10/2012 20:26

Love it. Would have used it for DD if we hadn't already called DS Alexander. I lack imagination. Truly a brilliant name.

JennaMoroney · 10/10/2012 10:38

yeah you could be right. That or Caroline. SOrt of like Carol but more royal.

Tamoo · 10/10/2012 10:29

My psychic powers tell me Alexandra will be the name Kate and William choose for their first baby if it's a girl.

Salbertina · 10/10/2012 10:27

Lovely!

BrainSurgeon · 10/10/2012 10:26

Great name, and so many nick names to choose from too. Go for it Smile

Lexilicious · 10/10/2012 10:17

I am one, don't really bother with it as a full name. Both my NNs have been mentioned, but when a baby my brother called me Dando/Danda. Outing myself, but DH calls me The Mighty Lex sometimes. I think I need a NC now...!

Gwennan · 10/10/2012 09:43

My sister is an Alexandra. My family always call her Alexandra but her DP, friends, workmates, etc. all call her Alex (her choice).

JennaMoroney · 09/10/2012 23:46

it's a mouthful. Alex is too masculine and unisex, lexie is too loo la la, sandra too dated. just not very nice really.

HiHowAreYou · 09/10/2012 22:42

I like it. Alex is nice too.

YouMayLogOut · 09/10/2012 22:40

Lovely classic name.

I like Alex as nickname too. I guess otherwise you could have Lexie?

Runningblue · 09/10/2012 22:40

I like it, a strong name.
How about xandra as another nn?

ThoughtsPlease · 09/10/2012 22:37

I have an Alexandra, she gets called Alex, I love the name. As others have said it was chosen as an underused classic name, when thinking of my girls' names I thought of names I would have liked to have been called.

quirrelquarrel · 09/10/2012 22:36

I love the name, so beautiful and special. I also like Alessandra.

HolyAutumnGoldBatman · 09/10/2012 22:36

It's not my favourite, it seems a bit long and has a harsh sound imo.

I know an Alexandra who is always called Sasha and one who is always called Lex.

I prefer Alessandra because it's a softer sound and it seems to flow better.

VBisme · 09/10/2012 22:32

Alexandra is what I would have called my daughter, it's a gorgeous name.

Merinda · 09/10/2012 22:30

You could go with the Russian nickname Sasha, which is quite nice as well. It is used for both girls and boys

TwllBach · 09/10/2012 22:27

I have only ever known wonderful Alexandras. It's a beautiful, strong name but still feminine with a variety of very pretty nick names. It's firmly at the top of my wish list!

LivingThings · 09/10/2012 22:23

I have an Alessandra (Italian variant) - totally love it!

Unicorn007 · 09/10/2012 21:36

I am an Alexandra & love my name. Classic and underused. Go for it!

NellyBluth · 09/10/2012 21:03

We have an Alexandria, which we chose because it is basically a recognisable and classic name but with a tiny little twist to make it more unique. She's always called Alex though, that was our choice. Personally I don't like Lexi/Lexie so I hope she sticks to Alex when she's older, or Allie which I occasionally say. Sasha is a sweet and different nickname.

One of the reasons I love it as a name is that it offers so much choice when she's older. She can choose what she wants to be called - Al, Allie, Alex, Lexi, Lex, Alexa, Alexandria... I have a boring name you can't change, I really wanted to giver her choice.

akaemmafrost · 09/10/2012 21:00

Everyone I know always says how much they like it too. It doesn't seem to occur to many though.

akaemmafrost · 09/10/2012 20:57

I love it. I have one. She goes by Alex.

Ilovehimtoo · 09/10/2012 20:57

We have one, nn Sasha.
