How popular are these names in Ireland??

I really don't want anything too popular! I am considering Beatrix, Tabitha, Florence and Cordelia........I know some of these are very popular in Britain but are they popular in Ireland? I have never ever met any child in Ireland with those names but if any Irish mums out there can tell me if these are on the rise here I would really appreciate it! Thanks

Always positive! She's three and a half now. My MIL thought I had made it up at first, but pointing out it was a biblical name put paid to that.

DS had a similarly unusual name and now there are two smaller ones with the same name in the town. I was slightly annoyed, especially when one of the mother's was his nursery worker. Doesn't bother me now. much

I don't completely agree wth that. I thinhk that Emily /Sophie /Isabel/Clara would have been seen as very English twenty years ago. We will always have the Irish names being used as well alongside English (language) names, which means that their popularity is less, but then the UK has a lot of different nationalities.

They are very uncommon and I believe will stay that way because as another poster said, they're seen as v English.

DD (21 months) has a name along those lines. We have never had anything but positive comments but rudeness would be fucking glacially received so maybe people are too scared.

Of course Florence was traditionally a boys name in Ireland.

I'm in N Ireland and don't know of any children with these names, and I know quite a few babies and under 10's.

Aah...see I live in Co.Clare, a bit different! However although dh is Irish, I'm English, so perhaps people won't find it so odd!

No I don't think so, but I'm in SoCoDu

My daughter has a 'posh' english name but i was in england when i named her. but, upshot is,m although I sound a bit regal shouting it out in tesco, we have not come accross another. when i was in the uk feeling a bit nostalgic about Ireland (!) I wanted to call her Clodagh or Maeve. Know a fair few of both of those names. NOT that popularity is everthing.

I'm in Ireland and have a Tabitha, there's a Beatrice in the same pre-school as her. Florence and Cordelia, both I don't know any of. Both lovely too!

I know one here. (a beatrice. She's ten like my dd). I know one woman my own age called Beatrice.

I'm in Ireland and currently pregnant, we are planning to call the baby Beatrice! I have never met one here.

I dont think any of those names are at all common in Ireland. Those posh`type English names never seem to take off that much.

I'm in Ireland.

I met a Beetroot (as I thought it was) when I was 7, I know one Flora, but no Florences and neither of the others have even been mentioned as possibilities by anyone I have ever met.

So not too common

Know of a few Beatrix's and a couple of beatrices. No tabithas but a few Florence's (flo) and a cordelia.

ps, my daughter's name is quite conventional and English sounding and has been labelled popular on mn but in real life I've never come accross one here, a child anyway. Know an adult with hte name.

I think the names are similar to the UK except that Irish names being used too pushes the English names down a few places. The trends are the same, the cycles are the same, but there will be few Emilys in Ireland because there will be more Aoifes and Maedhbhs and Clodaghs.

I know at least one of all of these except Cordelia. Never met a Cordelia.

I know 3 Florences all in their teens and 1 Cordelia who's 3 (friend tells us its a King Lear reference but we all know its Buffy related ) I'm in the North btw.

I know 2 Florence one Tabitha but don't know anyone with the other names. I'm in cork. I don't tggj these is anyone in Ireland called Cordelia.

There was a florence in my school and I know a baby beatrix but that's it.

I know one Florence aged 4.

I used to know a Tabitha who would be in her 30s by now.

That's the extent of my contact with those names.

I know a few Beatrices though.

Cutesy yeah I looked up the top 100 none of them there but my fear would be that they could be not too far off the top 100 and I wouldn't know as I don't think it is possible to get more than the top100 list here! SummerRain yeah I would be most wary of Florence taking off here! Thanks all for the feedback so far....great to see so many Irish mummy's on mn!
