How many middle names are too many?

I have 4 Middle names

ANy more than one is too many.

The angst and planning into something that is never going to be used and whihc has absolutely no point or relevance is beyond me.

You'll 'announce' the name, at which point I guess people are hoping everyone will think how marvellous and original you are, and you'll get a brief chance to explain your wackiness and/or carefully thought out profund meanings, and then apart from a drunken discussion at uni around the kitchen table when all other topics have even exhausted, it will NEVER BR MENTIONED AGAIN.

Naming Guidlines:

Angst over the first name, that IS important.

stick a family name in the middle to keep grandma happy.

Job done.

I remember asking my double-barralled DP if he had any middle names. His answer was, "I think mum and dad thought a first name and two surnames was quite enough, thanks". I feel sorry for him, it's like having a cool little fact that not many people know even if it is just Jane, like mine

Ds has 2middle names because it flowed better, I loved them, and for a family connection.

My ex then requested to be on his birth certificate and that he had a double barrelled surname by adding his in. I agreed, so now ds has 5names in total, and if I'm honest it feels a bit wanky and doesn't sound so right.

Was the right thing to do though :)

Dd1 and 2 both have two middle names plus one surname. Dd3 has a double barrelled surname, so we hesitated about how many middle names to give her. In the end we gave her two (short) middle names so she has five names in total. There are fewer letters in her name than than in dd2's, even including spaces.

Mine have each have my surname (very common but I am the 'last' of my family) as a second middle name, so they are Firstname Middlename VonKrumm Surname, but just Firstname Surname in everyday life. I have one middle name, DH has several, I think more than one is nice if it has some historical significance.

I've actually only ever come across one person with more than one middle name. I personally think just one is fine but each to their own...

DS1 has 3 - a family name, a "just because" name, and my maiden name.

DS2 will also have 3.

In some cultures, more middle names are the norm. Just make sure that there is enough space to fit all the letters on things like passport application forms. you can run into problems if your documents do not all match up exactly.

1 is plenty

Two middle names makes sense to me. One a name you love that goes well with the first name, the other a family name of some kind (of course if the two overlap and you absolutely LOVE your MiL's name, maybe you'd only use the one).

I would always assume there was some pressing family reason to use three middle names.

I struggle all 8 of my 4 boys, so kind of find myself agreeing with those of you who say 2 are too many

I think it depends on the situation.
My DD has 2 middle names and a double barrelled surname. That is because I really felt it was important to use my late mum's name but it didn't sound right next to her chosen name. I put a name in between to make it flow better.

Yes, I agree with Teahouse and Septemberpie - ours both have two...and also it gives them options if they decide they don't like their given names!

My kids also have 2 middle names for the same reasons as Teahouse. I just felt really strongly about creating a link with the past and it needed to be names from both sides of the family to be fair

It's more important that the names go nicely together than how many they have IMO.

For me, one is perfect, 2 is acceptable, more than 2 is too much.

My kids have 2 middle names; one from each side of the family so they have a chosen name from parents, and a life long connection to their grandparents too.

Dcs have one Which are both family names or they would just be x labootin and y labootin

2 is too many.

I have 2 as does DH hence so does DC1 and soon to arrive DC2 will also. We love that it feels a bit like a new family tradition for our little family. Plus you get to use more of the names you can't decide on from your short list!

We're giving our baby one middle name (which is the same as my own middle name) but we're also giving him both of our surnames (non-barrelled). In effect it's the same as two middle names (4 names total) which I think is the absolute maximum number I would ever hang bestow on a child.

A football teams worth is to many, any other amount, it's up to you

My dd has 2 and whines about it but hey .... My choice

Ds has two but they are quite long names.

I only use one for forms as its roo much faff using both and I don't really like either of them tbh.
