Felix....the cat?!

After hours of conversation, DH and I think we have settled on Felix. However, yesterday at the hairdressers (kind of a local place where everyone knows everyone and chats) I made the mistake of saying that we had chosen Felix and a few of the women in there burst into hysterics and said 'the cat!'

Now obviously DH and I have discusse the cat connection, but I guess we thought that it didn't really matter too much. We certainly didn't think there was a risk of bullying because of it. Now I am panicking...! What do you all think? We have had such a hard time deciding on a name because of an outrageously difficult surname and we really thought we had settled it!

Our baby boy born yesterday we named Felix Smile

VickyU · 01/10/2012 13:50

Thank you so much for all of your comments. I think we're going to go for it. It seems like most of you are saying that, yes, the association is there, but its a great name and it doesn't matter!

emmylou We've decided on Spike Grin

Grin Grin

Badgerina · 30/09/2012 19:28

GoByTrain Fee?

hiviolet · 29/09/2012 16:11

I love the name Felix and it's our number one choice for a boy. Don't give a shit if people think of a cat or cat food, they'll forget soon enough.

My auntie went as far as saying it would be cruel to call a baby Felix

susiedaisy · 29/09/2012 12:24

Felix the cat springs to mind straight away sorry!

GoByTrain · 29/09/2012 12:23

Badger - Felix is such a fab name. Love the meaning and, like others, I couldn't care less about cat food. In fact, I quite like the cat association. But, sorry, I think flee and fizz are pretty awful shortenings Grin . And I - probably since my name doesn't nn well - do want a name with a good nick name.
I know nick names are organic. But I can't think of an, erm, organic one I like. Lex? Fix? I suppose it will always just be Felix.

lightrain · 28/09/2012 06:50

People are idiots. Ignore them. And don't tell anybody your real name ideas - make something up to tell them. Everyone has an opinion on names.

sashh · 28/09/2012 06:43

Just use it.

I have a friend who was teased because 'James the cat' was on TV. I know of a Leonore, born just before the launch of the fabric conditioner.

emmyloo2 · 28/09/2012 06:18

Badgerina - what name did you decide for your DS2 if you don't mind sharing? I recall seeing your previous threads but can't remember...

Badgerina · 27/09/2012 22:57

As for nicknames, I would use Flee or Fizz.

Badgerina · 27/09/2012 22:56

DS2 due any day now will have Felix as one of his middle names. I love the name. And the meaning.

Limpit80 · 27/09/2012 09:58

Felix is currently at the top of our shortlist and even I say in my head 'cats like Felix, like Felix' sometimes! But I dont really care. Its a lovely name anyway and if thats the worst they can tease him about, I think he'll do alright! As a teacher, I find that kids dont really tease each other about their names in the way they did when I was at school. Though I suppose that could be to do with where you live.

PuffPants · 27/09/2012 08:55

have a cat I mean Hmm

PuffPants · 27/09/2012 08:55

DH used to work with a Felix who called his DS Oscar.

They don't even gave a cat!

telsa · 27/09/2012 08:28

Felix is really nice, and what is wrong with cats! Do all the Floras worry about margarine? I do prefer the Euro pronunciation - Fey-lix, but I guess one could not get away with that in UK.

squoosh · 26/09/2012 21:08

Hmmm, I automatically think The Cat when I hear the name. Cartoon and cat food brand have made it very feline.

I wouldn't say it out loud, but I'd definitely think it.

UnnamedFemaleProtagonist · 26/09/2012 21:05

I have one. It is getting v popular. I wanted him to be Felix Arthur but drew the line at two brands of cat food. His actual name combination was much derided on MN anyway.

misscomanche · 26/09/2012 21:00

Love it, its's on my short list. Even if anyone thinks of the cat at first, the association will wear off.

Well, I admit that is one of my first associations with the name as well. But it's a great name. I would consider using it myself if it didn't clash with DH's surname.

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 26/09/2012 19:54

Nice! Friend has one no mention of cat food. I'd use it..

GoByTrain · 26/09/2012 19:50

I like it a lot! But (& I only ask since it's on my list) does it have any nn potential aside from 'Fe'?

newtonupontheheath · 26/09/2012 19:09

I love felix.

But I also liked Dexter and Marley..... Which are apparently dogs names Hmm

Ham69 · 26/09/2012 18:33

I love the name and wanted it for DC2 who turned out to be a DD. So what about the cat food. There are far worse things to share a name with.
