Thoughts on Elizabeth

Hi, struggling to pick out girls names as we have a very short surname and it def rules out any 'colour' names such as Ruby, Scarlett etc. I really like the name Elizabeth-it was my grandmothers name (very inspirational lady). Husband and MIL do not like. However, he has yet to make any name suggestions.

Lovely name! We have loads in my family! My gran called my aunt Elisabeth to stop people shortening it! Didn't work! We have: Liz, Betty, Beth, Lilli... I'd like to continue the family tradition but I only really like Libby & DH hates it! Sad

Kelerina · 26/09/2012 14:25

Great name, classic but versatile. Love some of the nns, especially like Betsy, Betty, Beth

imustbepatient · 26/09/2012 11:29

Agree, ignore MIL, she doesn't get a vote and will end up loving the name anyway when she associates it with a darling grandchild rather than thinking of it in the abstract or of another one she knows.

Hopefully your DH will love one of the nicknames and change his mind as it is such a lovely name. Also agree with above poster who said that if you start out using the nickname you like there is every chance others will use it automatically, until your DD is older and chooses her own nn.

wildpoppy · 26/09/2012 11:02

What's it got to do with MIL?

JulietMontague · 26/09/2012 09:57

It's just a beautiful name. I am biased because I have one though! I would say choose your nickname early and let everyone know what you want it shortened to. My DD was supposed to be 'Betty' but in my newborn fog I forgot to tell anyone and now she gets the full 'Elizabeth' title from everyone!

EnglishGirlApproximately · 26/09/2012 09:52

Love it - was my first choice but I ended up with a boy!

bettythebuilder · 25/09/2012 22:35

Love it, (biased!) but don't really like Liz or Lizzy as a nn so choose a nice one like Libby or Beth early on! Prefer it with a 'z' to an 's'

AThingInYourLife · 25/09/2012 22:33

Don't spell it with an S.

It won't seem French and sophisticated, just a pointless complication.

Elizabeth in English is spelled with a Z, that is what people expect.

bangersmashandbeans · 25/09/2012 22:28

Being biased I love it and called my DD it! We decided very early that she would be known as Lily (if it's good enough for her maj...!) but I love the options it gives her.

GeorginaWorsley · 25/09/2012 22:27

Ihave one and always refer to her as Elizabeth

BananaBubbles · 25/09/2012 22:23

Love it.

Love it. It's a beautiful name for a girl. Nice with an 's' rather than a 'z'.

Happykitten · 25/09/2012 21:23

She doesn't ....but she can't help interfering (I'm quite annoyed at husband letting it slip). Just when u hear such negativity you can't help but question.

Love it. And love the abbreviations for it.

And I like a name with a Z in it.

IWantToGoToThere · 25/09/2012 21:08

I love it. If DS2 wasn't a girl, he was going to be Elizabeth, known as Libby.

Why does your MIL get a say though?

newby2 · 25/09/2012 16:41

Love it, love Elspeth, Lillybet (Queen Mum called the Queen) Lizbeth. If you start her off with a nn it will stick.

Jusfloatingby · 25/09/2012 16:32

Jeeze Gwennan
She only asked what we thought of Elizabeth.

Dogsmom · 25/09/2012 16:25

It's a name we've considered too but neither of us like the nn Liz and that's what she'd probably end up as.

Happykitten · 25/09/2012 16:08

Thanks, I think husband would like the nickname Libby. It's good to know other people like the name too .

Love it!

DD is a Libby, but if, as she gets older, she would prefer to be a Betty or a Bea or a Lizzy, or even an Elizabeth, she has that option.

A lovely, versatile, classic name!

Sirzy · 25/09/2012 15:51

Love it, was my girls name when I had DS

Allice · 25/09/2012 15:50

I really like it. I've recently twins called Elizabeth and Susanna, I really like both names.
