Do you tell people your names choices IRL?

People have started asking me what names we are considering. So far, I've just been saying we haven't got any yet (big lie).

I guess the reason I don't want to say is that I don't want to hear it when people don't like the names we do. When baby comes, if we give him / her a name they don't like it's not like they can say "bleugh, what a horrible name". Whereas now they do feel they can say that and then we might be put off something we otherwise like.

What is your approach to this thorny topic?!

I just kept saying "weve got a few ideas, will wait and see what they look like" and if they pressed for an actual.name, id give them one or two off the bottom of the list.

toysoldiers · 20/09/2012 10:09

Don't. Unless it's someone whose opinion you genuinely want.

Everyone will comment and they will not hold back if there is no baby to attach it to Wink.

Ragwort · 20/09/2012 10:10

No - do not tell anyone Grin, for all the reasons above.

toysoldiers · 20/09/2012 10:10

We gave both our DC joke names. People did genuinely believe this was what we were planning and looked suitably bemused.

Actually think I would use one of the names if I were to have another Blush

blondiep14 · 20/09/2012 10:11

We always say we haven't agreed yet, or maybe say one we really considered but discounted.

LemonBreeland · 20/09/2012 10:11

No, despite my Mum trying hard with each of my three to find out. I did not want her opinion so I would not tell her. Everyone got told the name when they were born.

StateofConfusion · 20/09/2012 10:13

We have our girl name as sil was pregnant too and if she'd used it I'd have been extremely upset as its my late Grandmas name. I got in a stupid pregnant stress about it, so dp basically asked her if she thought of any names she said yes he said were using Lily if its a girl, so if you do aswell there will be two.

Sounds precious maybe but my Grandma was exceptionally important to me.

BonaDea · 20/09/2012 10:15

I don't think that's precious at all, state - if there is a name you have your heart set on and will be using regardless i guess it makes sense to say so!!

No, don't tell people! So much nicer to tell people once baby has arrived.

PeshwariNaan · 20/09/2012 10:28

Absolutely not! everyone will have an opinion. Better to name the baby because people can't say much then (to your face). If you really need an opinion better to post on here :)

Dillydollydaydream · 20/09/2012 10:44

I Learnt the hard way the first 2 times do we told nobody when we had dc 3. We just reeled Off a few names from the top 10 if anybody asked. We actually told the inlaws some names so that dc initials spelt BUM! We used Barnaby Ulysses. The name we chose was actually nothing like that but was quite fun to see their faces!

PrunellaDeVille · 20/09/2012 12:17

Everyone asks but i haven't told anyone despite longing to discuss it - sometimes people will go on to discuss names generally during which conversation they might pick up a few names we've considered but discounted - this seems to please as they then at least know the styles you're thinking of.

Unfortunately in one such conversation their first response to not being able to know was to say:
'well as long as you don't call it ' which, amazingly, was precisely the name we'd chosen. they then went on to share a rant about how awful that name was. so much so we had to have a rethink - they'll be gutted when they hear it as the middle name if it's a boy!

NellyBluth · 20/09/2012 12:21

We did, after about 20w or so when we knew it was a girl, and also when we knew that if anything bad happened the baby would still be called that name. But we were very, very certain on the name. We didn't have any negative responses, but then its quite a 'normal' name so it was unlikely anyone would react badly to it. And I'm also utterly useless at keeping a secret... Wink

ksrwr · 20/09/2012 12:23

i was pretty open about our name choices, we told our NCT group we were expecting a girl, and we were going to call her either Sophie or Jessica. When DD turned up she looked like neither of those names.. and i now can't believe how dumb i was to think that you can pick a name before you've met the baby ;-)
she's now called a different name entirely!
i think people assume their child's name is actually important to other people, when normally they're just asking to seem interested.. they're just making conversation - they dont actually care!

sweetkitty · 20/09/2012 12:26

I did with DD1 and regretted it, now I tell everyone never to divulge your name choices especially with close family, you will get the looks and wrinkled up faces!

I've heard of people change their chosen name as Granny said she hated it and would refuse to call the baby it! Better to decide between yourselves then when the baby is born announce their name, then no one can comment (well they can but that's their name).

MrsJohnDeere · 20/09/2012 12:32

Absolutely not, particularly family. Or say something flippant (dh told everyone that ds2 was going to be called Lancelot).

SarryB · 20/09/2012 12:35

Dh told everyone we were going to call LO 'Glum'. It's an Icelandic name. I called him Squid.

We only told close family the boys name we had chosen, and were still discussing girls name right up until the birth.

CaptainHetty · 20/09/2012 12:36

I tell people we want to meet her first before we decide. Which is true - we do have a few we like, though. The only person I've actually shared those names with is my sister.

Finbert · 20/09/2012 12:38

I won't tell anyone (due in 3 weeks), I just say that we have a top girls and a top boys name but we aren't telling until they arrive. I know there will be some family members that dislike mine and my husband's choices so it doesn't give them a chance to whinge!
