Otto? Is my DH crazy?

emmyloo2 · 19/09/2012 04:44

My DH keeps insisting that Otto should be on our short list for DC2 if this baby is a boy. He "discovered" it in his family tree which is full of awful Serbian names. Otto was the only one that was even remotely usuable.

I think it's quite ridiculous and that the poor child would be laughed out of the playground. DS1 is George.

Is my DH nuts? His first preference for a boy is Felix. Then Otto. Really??

What does the Mumsnet jury think? Ridiculous??!

I think Otto is a pretty cute name, actually. It's very common in Germanic countries, people will probably just assume he's got German relatives or something.

I doubt he'd get seriously bullied, it's not that ridiculous, lot's of kids have unusual names now- it's not like you're calling him Pomegranate or Felicity or something.

PrunellaDeVille · 20/09/2012 12:09

love it, would be on our list except used by an acquaintance - a very nice young lad with a brother Albert

Diamond7 · 20/09/2012 07:43

Love Otto and Otis!

Would be on our list but they don't work with our surname.

FamiliesShareGerms · 19/09/2012 22:32

Lovely as long as your surname is not Bismarck or Flick

well you should because I am always right obviously Grin

Jacksmania · 19/09/2012 20:42

I think we've received the message Hmm. It's just that not everyone agrees with you.

littlebluechair · 19/09/2012 20:31

STOP TRYING TO MATCH THE NAME TO GEORGE!!!

Sorry for shouting, but I hate the matchy matchy thing (as I already said I think, but I feel this message has not been received yet)

cakeismysaviour · 19/09/2012 15:05

Says it all really.

Says what exactly?

Amateurish · 19/09/2012 14:25

I know an Otto. His brother is named Caractacus. Says it all really.

Vickles · 19/09/2012 14:25

Ah, my friend's son's name is Otto... I like it.

WowOoo · 19/09/2012 14:21

I like Otto and Otis.
With a family connection, I think you should go for Otto. I reckon it's the kind of name that would grow on you.
The more I say it, the more I like it.

mayanna123 · 19/09/2012 14:18

Otto is awful, old fashioned but not in a good way. It has been used as a 'comical' name in Germany, as well as being this:www.otto.de/, Europe's largest mail order comany and him:www.otto-waalkes.com/index.php?sid=73fda6fb45c2991a8f3bc36a9dc6c8c0, one of Germany's most well known comedians.

Otis, on the other hand, is a great name!

Dollydowser · 19/09/2012 13:48

Love it!

Psammead · 19/09/2012 13:44

Otto is cool.

Otis is too.

How about Axel?

DoingItForMyself · 19/09/2012 13:34

I like Otto, but then 2 of my 3 have previously unusual names, which have since become more mainstream (one mentioned on here!) Don't worry about what other people think, if you like it use it, if you don't don't.

justaphasejustaphase · 19/09/2012 12:38

Love love Otto

Please use it, it was on my list last year but we had a girl Smile

cakeismysaviour · 19/09/2012 12:28

I like Otto. :)

My DS1 is also called George and I had DS2 last week and he still has no name!

I want Bruno, but DP wants Nicholas.

Yorkpud · 19/09/2012 12:24

I quite like it. It may be a bit unusual but it is easy to pronounce. I also has meaning as it is from his family tree. I think George and Otto sound great together. There are many awful names out there but I don't think Otto is one of them!

SarryB · 19/09/2012 12:24

I quite like it! Some kids have very strange names these days, Otto won't stand out.

delilah88 · 19/09/2012 12:20

It's a brilliant name - watch the film Lovers of the Arctic Circle!

EverlongYouAreGoldAndOrange · 19/09/2012 12:13

Otto is cool.

I would have had it but already had two ds's with O names.

BananaBubbles · 19/09/2012 12:12

Otto is great.It's a lovely,strong,unusual,but not too weird,name.

bogbean · 19/09/2012 10:49

My 28 year old brother is Otto... has always been well received and suits him totally... I am even considering it for my own baby :-)

squoosh · 19/09/2012 10:45

Otto is very trendy at the moment, I've met a couple of little ones.

I don't like it though.
