what if you dont like any names?

I am 33 weeks pregnant and we dont have a single name we like. With DD I had both choices already picked by now.

We look at name lists and talk about names, but just cannot find any. We have quite similar taste so I suppose thats good.

Some names we like a bit are Erin for a girl and Dylan, Daniel and Olly for a boy.

A girl called Erin was horrible to DD where we used to live. So thats out. I hate the nn Danny so I dont know if I would call a boy Daniel. Dylan I loved but have completely went off. And Olly divides us. I prefer the spelling Ollie. DP hates it. And we cant decide whether to put Oliver on the BC.

:(

Any advice?

I have a sister called Imogen, at school her friends call her emo or immer.
Family call her Imo or Kenneth!

charlottery · 16/09/2012 20:57

I'm a Charlotte, my brother was a Dominic, which I always thought went well.
Love Imogen - really nice name

It took us 2 weeks to name dd2 - don't panic!

MJandherdog · 16/09/2012 20:09

I know exactly how you feel. I'm expecting no.2 and almost cannot be bothered to think of a name. Dd's name was chosen well before her birh and we oth loved it...maybe sub-consciously this time I'm so dreading the impending nightmare of sleepless nights and pooey nappies that I can't lose myself in pre-natal bliss!

My niece is an Imogen and I think it is such a beautiful and classy name. Her grandpa calls her Immy (cute), we call her Mangopants...don't ask!
I love Erin as it's a feminine but not too girly name.

For a boy I think Oliver is a cracking name...traditional, solid and not a "naughty boy's name"!

Kveta · 16/09/2012 19:50

Caleb, Joshua, Jacob?

wannabedomesticgoddess · 16/09/2012 19:48

I think if it was spelt like that I would always pronounce it elaine-a in my head.

Im a tricky one arent I :o

Ethan is a fav of DPs but Im not keen.

I love Noah and have done since the notebook came out. But its so common now. And DP hates it.

Any other boys suggestions along those lines? I think name lists are counter productive. But hearing names on their own with peoples impressions of them is helpful!

My friend has an Elena - same pronunciation as Eleanor but slightly different spelling may make you feel differently about it?

Kveta · 16/09/2012 19:38

Oliver can be Oli too :)

seeker · 16/09/2012 19:37

Imogen Louise.

Lovely.

seeker · 16/09/2012 19:36

I know an Imogen who's called Imo.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 16/09/2012 19:16

We both really like Imogen. And it goes with the surname.

I knew MNetters wisdom would help us :)

I have an Imogen, she has loads of nns, here's a few- Imy, Midge, Moo, Mimi and Little legs!
It's a great name!
My other daughter has Aeryn as a middle name, said the same as Erin but i preferred this spelling.
Good luck choosing!

MrsJohnDeere · 16/09/2012 17:47

We felt like this with ds2. We nearly called him Thomas because it was the only name that we both thought was OK, even though neither of us were that keen. Everything else one or other hated!

But you can over think these things. The right name will suddenly pop into your head at some point, possibly not until after the birth.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 16/09/2012 17:29

:o Snog. If I ask her what names she likes she makes a series of sounds. There hasnt been a serious name yet. Shes 3.9 and can speak well. She just doesnt really get it.

Let Charlotte choose or choose an old family name?

wokeupandsmeltthecoffee · 16/09/2012 17:11

My dd is Erin and I love it. It means Ireland. Second choice was Niamh but (now ex) dp couldn't comprehend the spelling. For a boy it was going to be Ethan but I've gone off that now.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 16/09/2012 17:08

DP likes Oscar.

Matthew very common around here. Owen is an ex.

Its hard to find names we dont already have associations with.

Oh and the girls middle name choice is Louise.

Its hard to explain with the Eleanor thing. DP likes it because its after a car and I like it too. But its not as popular here as in other areas and I guess I associate it with my granny.

Charlotte is an old name so Im not adverse to old names (and Charlotte was unusual around here 4 years ago) but Eleanor seems to unlike us.

I dont mean to offend anyone who has used it. It is a lovely name.

Imo?
Ginny?
I think Imogen is a lovely name

wannabedomesticgoddess · 16/09/2012 16:58

Does anyone have an Imogen? Or know of any possible nicknames which could come about?

DP likes Imogen!

Eleanor is a million miles from fuddy duddy - and yes I have got one. It's elegant, classic, strong and pretty all at the same time. It also has a lovely family connection for you, so I'd say job done - Eleanor it is.

Daniel is a nice boys name, more likely to be nn Dan than Danny these days I would think. If you like Daniel you might like Matthew, Nicholas, Andrew, Michael. Or how about something like Reuben, Rafferty, Gabriel, Owen, Oscar, Fintan?

DontmindifIdo · 16/09/2012 16:54

I also think Dylan is lovely.

I think the suggestion of Imogen works really well with Charlotte.

DontmindifIdo · 16/09/2012 16:52

Easy then for boys, say to DH yes to Olly, but as it's a nickname, you'll put Oliver on the birthcertificate as Olly doesn't really work for some jobs and it gives him the option when he grows up. Then announce the birth of little Oliver. Sorted.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 16/09/2012 16:46

You could be right saskia.

When I was pregnant with DD I was convinced I was having a boy. I had dreams about a little blonde haired Dylan. That was 4 years ago now! Maybe its just too familiar now.

I think I will know better when we meet him/her. But it would be nice to have a bit of an idea. I dont really want two weeks of calling it baby again :o

saskia87 · 16/09/2012 16:39

I think sometimes you just get a bit bored of liking the same names! When my DD1 was born, our second choice had been Phoebe - which we've just named DD2. When pregnant with DD2 I wasn't sure about Phoebe as it just felt like I'd liked it for too long, and that I might be missing out on a better name (although never found one).

wannabedomesticgoddess · 16/09/2012 16:31

Dylan was my choice if DD had been a boy Saskia :) I really did love it so much. I cant explain why I have gone off it.
