Time is ticking away quickly now - 5 wks to edd. It's been much harder this time to find names we both like.

I'd love to hear your honest thoughts on our (v. short!) shortlists.

Girls
Esme (we'd go with the Ez-may pronunciation but is this one of those names that would give her a lifetime of correcting people???)
Eliza
Harriet

Boys
Toby
Aaron (pronounced Arran, so maybe that should be the spelling???)
Adam

Not in love with any of them really so alternative suggestions welcome. Can't be anything ending in an s sound, runs into our surname in a way that often produces hilarious results (gutted as love Tobias and Lawrence) and can't end in th either for similar reasons (gutted as love Seth and Meredith).

Siblings are Eleanor and Tabitha.

Eliza is gorgeous!

I give you

Bea
Romilly
Clemency
Gabriella

and

Theo
Finn
Rufus

Esmé (the accent shows it's ez-may, not ez-mee) is beautiful.
Eliza - doolittle. I find the Liza sound harsh.
Harriet - again quite harsh sounding and not very feminine.

Toby - jug
Aaron - I like this pn. air-run. I like Arran pn. and spelt that way
Adam - lovely, classic, timeless yet not overused like Thomas, James etc. Suits all ages.

My choices are Esmé and Adam by a mile!

LemonLovesLilac · 16/09/2012 20:23

I think I would go with Harriet so that you would not have two names beginning with E!! Even though I adore Eliza! I will be honest and say I actually don't like any of your suggestions for boys names!

MJandherdog · 16/09/2012 20:16

From your list I love Harriet! For boys I like Toby but also love pp's suggestion of Arthur.

YesIKnowILookHugeThanks · 16/09/2012 19:49

It's been really useful to hear other's opinions.

Think we're probably settled on Toby for a boy but still uncertain about a girls name. All will become clear once baby arrives though I reckon.

Just thought I'd add my two penneth!

Your lists are very similar to mine with DD. DH vetoed practically all of them so we ended up with an Isobel but loved Imogen, Harriet, Meredith and Esme (pronounced as you would). I know an 18 yo Harriet and its not prim at all.

Quite like Toby. Think it would be fine for an adult. I do try and imagine a man in a suit introducing himself to a potential boss. IMO some names do sound a bit silly in this scenario.

I like Raphael but does sound quite posh. That being said my DS is called Gabriel so who am I to talk Grin. Quite like Reuben.

I'm pregnant with DC3 and still have lots of names I like, DH has completely vetoed most of them so I think this ones just going to be called baby! Then we'll change it as they get older...Man / Woman are fine for names right? Wink

YesIKnowILookHugeThanks · 15/09/2012 11:41

Hmm lots of food for thought, thanks.

Asked DH about Tristan as I do like it but he was very noncommital, think maybe it's too 'posh' for us though DH didn't think so.

Funny that lots of the ideas suggested are names of people in our family. Both my and DH's names among them!

So far Toby seems to be the winner of the boys names (it is my favourite, wish we could use Tobias but it really does produce very silly possibilities when teamed with our surname).

The split between Eliza, Esme and Harriet looks pretty equal. DH likes Harriet best, my reservation is - is it a bit prim when compared to Eleanor and Tabitha?

Don't mind the vampire connection with Esme, many people think Tabitha is feline or witchy - so it would fit nicely!

I take the point about the potential for friends to nn both Eleanor and Eliza Elle/Ellie and it's making me think twice about Eliza. We'd never shorten either name but you can't stop the girls doing it themselves or their friends as they get older.

A name I loved a few months ago but have kind of gone off is Reuben. I'm warming to it again though - any thoughts on that one?

Julia

Edward

GW297 · 14/09/2012 22:39

Esmae I think is how some people spell esme for the way you'd wish to pronounce it but may not be in keeping with her sisters' names.

Harriet and Charlotte sound better.

Harry?

jaffacakehips · 14/09/2012 22:17

I was going to suggest Matilda however through it was to similar to your DD's.

What about Tristan?

Doilooklikeatourist · 14/09/2012 21:55

Sorry , I mentioned Twilight . Esme is the foster mother of Edward Cullen , the vampire who falls in love with Bella .
Please don't say ooooh Renesme , how lovely .

exoticfruits · 14/09/2012 21:38

Adam and Harriet

purpleloosestrife · 14/09/2012 21:35

love all your names - we have virtually the same short list! All 3 girls names are gorgeous, but Eliza, Esme (Es-may) and then Harriet in preference.

Georgina , Catherine or Francesca (Chessie) as ideas?

Boys - Tobias is gorgeous - though Toby is also an amazing name, Aaron again on my list (though I'd go with "air - ron" pronunciation!) Adam is also a great name but i don't "love" it....

I do like Bennedict, Michael, David and James......

MrsJohnDeere · 14/09/2012 21:31

Harriet and Toby

Gwennan · 14/09/2012 21:27

I believe the Twilight comment was in reference to a character called Renesmee (ruh-nez-may), who is the daughter of the two main characters (Edward and Bella). Her name apparently derives from that of two female relatives (Renee and Esme).

Gwennan · 14/09/2012 21:25

I love Eleanor and Tabitha but the only one of your current suggestions that stands out for me is Harriet. Eleanor, Tabitha, and Harriet just sound like sisters to me!

I suggest the following names:

Eleanor, Tabitha & Cordelia
Eleanor, Tabitha & Honor
Eleanor, Tabitha & Juliet
Eleanor, Tabitha & Marianne
Eleanor, Tabitha & Miriam
Eleanor, Tabitha & Pearl
Eleanor, Tabitha & Rosalind
Eleanor, Tabitha & Serena

Eleanor, Tabitha & Dominic
Eleanor, Tabitha & Isaac
Eleanor, Tabitha & Nathaniel
Eleanor, Tabitha & Oscar
Eleanor, Tabitha & Rowan
Eleanor, Tabitha & Rupert
Eleanor, Tabitha & Sebastian
Eleanor, Tabitha & Victor

cashmere · 14/09/2012 21:12

Sadie
Gabriella
Rosalie
From your original list I like Esme

I prefer your latest list of boys names. What about Louis?

smogwod · 14/09/2012 20:32

I love all your names especially Eliza but wouldn't use it with Eleanor in case they both end up shortened to Elle/Ellie

YesIKnowILookHugeThanks · 14/09/2012 20:24

Twilight? Have never read the books or seen any of the films - what's the connection?

OP posts:
Doilooklikeatourist · 14/09/2012 20:20

Esme . No . Too twilight .
Harriet and Eliza . Like both .
You say you'll like Meredith , there's a lovely Welsh girls name Mererid ( sort of Mare Air Idd )

Like Toby , don't like the others
Yes yes to Barnaby and Arthur .

boyfallingoutofthesky · 14/09/2012 20:10

Like Eliza and Esme (but would say Es-mee). Less keen on Harriet.

I have an Aaron (pronounced Air-on), personally think the other pronounciation should be spelled Arran and not very keen on this. Adam is lovely. I find Toby a bit cutesy, but it is ok.

I think a 3 syllable boys name like Dominic or Nathaniel would go well with your other 2.

Other girls suggestions:
Madeleine
Verity
Catherine
like suggestion of Marianne and think it goes well with your other names.

good luck!

YesIKnowILookHugeThanks · 14/09/2012 20:07

Some great suggestions thanks.

We've talked about Barnaby before both like it but is it too cutsie?

Both love Beatrice but it fails the s sounding ending test. Imogen and Anya are both lovely. Imogen was on shortlist for DD1 and has fallen off somehow over the years - putting it back on. We share similar taste Littlecherublegs

Personally I really like Jasper, Noah, Rory, Samuel, Oscar and Owen. DH not so keen plus a close family member has bagsied Noah.

When DD2 was born the choice was actually between Tabitha and Matilda, so we do love that. DH still likes Matilda but I think they're too similar. I quite like Arthur, have tried and failed to persuade DH about this one before though.

OP posts:
wigglesrock · 14/09/2012 19:37

I would say Aaron the same way you do, what about Dominic?

I much prefer Esme to the other two names.

Montsti · 14/09/2012 19:15

How about Matilda? George/Arthur/James/Andrew/Benedict/Benjamin

Littlecherublegs · 14/09/2012 17:55

Eliza and Toby would be my pick from your short list.

Or:
Beatrice
Imogen
Anya
Josephine
Georgina
Clementine
Francesca
Charlotte
Madeline
Amelia

Jasper
Noah
Rory
Samuel
Max
Oscar
Joel
Nathaniel
Miles
Owen
