How popular is SOPHIE?

This name is at the top of our list at the moment. I read that it is in the top 10, but I only know 2 young Sophies (one is 6, the other one is 3). For me, it is a family name and it sounds nice with our last name and with the names of our older children.

Thanks for your post irregularegular - I sometimes worry about the popularity of Sophie but, as someone who has an unusual name, I always grew up wishing I was one of the "Janes" in my class at school. Totally agree that there is nothing wrong with classic and popular.

Lots of Sophies here. My 10 yr old is one of three in her class. In her 8 yr old brother's class there is one Sophie and one Sophia. Maybe there are fewer baby Sophies?

I don't mind at all. I prefer popular names, provided they are classic rather than just trendy. I think Sophie quite likes being one of the Sophies. I'm a Katherine/Kate which is incredibly popular in my age group and I never minded that either. I think it is better for a child to establish their own individuality rather than have it stamped on them by a very 'different' name.

Anyway, rant over. Lovely name. But popular round here.

I think there are regional variations. Do you know, I've never met a Chloe, even though it was supposed to be the most popular name they year Sophie was born.

DD2's name and have only come across one other in her nursery (we're in the south east). It's quite popular here but not as popular as eg. Anna, Charlotte, Emily.

Funny enough DD1 has a much less popular name (around 90th in the tables I think) and still ended up with two in her reception class!

Know lots of older Sophies but around here Sophia is more popular with babies. I prefer Mildred!

It's a lovely name. If DS had been a DD he would have been Zofia (DP's mother's and grandmother's name)

Sophie/Sophia is a very timeless and classic name. So is Isabelle/Isabella and Anne/Anna.

There were 4 in DDs pre school class last year (3-4 year olds) they had to be known by their middle names too to differentiate. Way too common for me and lost all charm it had for that reason but if that doesnt bother you go for it if it does niggle I really wouldn't.

There is a Sophie and a Sophia in DD's class and another Sofia at her childminders and at least 3 of her classmates have younger siblings called Sophie.

It is very pretty and I considered Sophie/Sophia for DD2 but glad I didn't pick it based on popularity round here (north west).

Was popular around here about 12 years ago but DD2 who is 7 has been the only one in her year group. Generally one a year group sort of name.

Isobel and varients of seem to be the name of choice where we are.

I have a Sophie, we live in a small village but I know one other a couple of years older. Freya seems to be the choice here!

not sure about UK. In canada Sophia is in the top 3 names every year and Sophie is around 11 or 12. Basically, very popular. But cute.
