Sounds a bit like Orphan to me, not a nice connotation...

WerthersUnOriginal · 09/09/2012 13:48

Hmm I'm in two minds. I'm not against Greek mythology names, some girl ones are lovely imho. But Orpheus..could be trying a bit hard.

Gawd I dunnoConfused. I do think people grow into a name and claim it as their own. To start with people will think Orpheus=Unusual Greek name, but soon they'll think of it as the person they know and it'll mean him.

I've changed my mind...go for it! Grin

DoMeDon · 09/09/2012 13:43

Orpheus wont' find his name charming when he's getting seven bails of shite mocked at school.

MmeLindor · 09/09/2012 13:37

Greek names are sadly underused.

Eurydice is fab too, although I would perhaps spell it UrIdyce to go with your posting name on MN.

Lolwhut · 09/09/2012 12:56

Can you give us a hint about your surname. I would prefer Orpheus with a stong plain name such as Jones over a more elaborate double barrelled type of name. IYSWIM

Twonker · 09/09/2012 12:47

If your family can carry it off, great! I think it's a really strong name.

WithACherryOnTop · 09/09/2012 11:54

It's awful.

scorchienne · 09/09/2012 11:23

I know an Orpheus, he is Greek but not a musician. His nickname is Orph/Orphie

pixiestix · 09/09/2012 11:20

I love it!

CruCru · 09/09/2012 10:11

It reminds me a bit of the Mateix - Morpheous only without the M.

What nickname would he have? Orphy?

seeker · 09/09/2012 08:53

"ORPHEUS with his lute made trees
And the mountain tops that freeze
Bow themselves when he did sing:
To his music plants and flowers
Ever sprung; as sun and showers 5
There had made a lasting spring.

Every thing that heard him play,
Even the billows of the sea,
Hung their heads and then lay by.
In sweet music is such art, 10
Killing care and grief of heart
Fall asleep, or hearing, die."

Take it up with Shakespeare, UrIndoors!

Lolwhut · 09/09/2012 08:48

Orpheus is too posh/pretentious sounding for me. Although, it does sound nice.

hellokitty123 · 09/09/2012 08:41

Orpheus, whilst not widely used, actually has a nice sound and certainly sounds masculine.

GothAnneGeddes · 09/09/2012 01:04

Come on. Unless you're taking parenting inspiration from "A Boy Named Sue".

Moominsarescary · 09/09/2012 00:44

No

UrIndoors · 09/09/2012 00:36

Yes it is brave Exit - you have to be if you're facing the furies etc

(I mean on reading Orpheus in your OP)

ForkInTheForeheid · 09/09/2012 00:35

Hmm. No. 1. it does sound a little out of pretentious and out of place (presuming you're not actually Greek) 2. on reading Orpheus my thought processes went as follows: - orpheus and eurydice was a good story - oh he got horribly ripped limb from limb at the end.

UrIndoors · 09/09/2012 00:35

seeker I think you'll find it's a "lyre" actually not lute thanks Hmm

Pls don't try to derail this thread - if you don't like the name just come out and say it tvm

Brave

seeker · 09/09/2012 00:30

"oh put that bloody lute away!"

ShadowsCollideWithPeople · 09/09/2012 00:29

Delia, the bongos are truly stunning. Especially at 3am. Can you imagine the OP lying in bed, muttering 'Don't let this be Orpheus playing bongos. Please don't let this be Orpheus playing bongos'. Then Orpheus going wherever the music takes him, Kitten.

Only if he plays bongos at 3 am though. While walking down the stairs. If he 're-members to use the sub-junctive'.

DeliaMcNab · 09/09/2012 00:21

Shadows ah the bongos - an instrument of such depth. Imagine the drumming through the still night air.
