Jura?

Just wondering what people think of Jura as a name for either boy or girl? Love the Scottish islands but Isla(y) is already popular and I'm not keen on Iona or Skye. I think of it as a boys name but DSis reckons ending in "a" makes it feminine...

Rona is not unusual at all as a girl's name in Scotland (also Rhuna and Riona). Wouldn't use Oban, but i do have awful memories of working there Sad

This was on my list of names too, but the coffee/whiskey reference put me off a bit ( although they are two things I used to enjoy very much! )

I'm not brave enough to name my child Jura, but I still love it as a name. X

I don't drink whisk(e)y so I am surprised that so many make that connection, but not for Islay!

Hmm. Liking Rona and Kerrera, thanks for the link Squoosh. And Oban. Coll is too close to Colin for me and also the name of the imaginary border collie that will one day be mine.

I like Coll for a boy and thought about Tiree for a girl. Also Oban for a boy.

Same as greenandcabbage said, reminds me of dura.

However dp has suspected problems with his and dd recently had meningitis so its probably just me having heard it a lot more than most recently!

I know Scottish islands are in vogue as first names, Lewis/Harris/Isla/Barra/Skye/Iona etc. but my first thought when I see Jura is whiske/y.

How about Glenfiddich?
Or Aberfeldy?

Sorry just makes me think its equivalent of calling your child Chardonnay, Chianti or Merlot.

We have an Arran in the family already, not keen on Lewis or Harris.

I like it. There are plenty of Ionas, Skyes, and Islas out there, so why not a Jura? But I think it would work better as a middle name.

I know a little boy called Jura. And before I knew him DH mentioned it as a possibility for one of ours.

Sula. Is an actual name as well. Maybe Ailsa? Boys- Harris, Arran, Lewis. Jura no. Juror/ juracell/ jurex or just Ju.

Oh Jura is such a lovely place. Not 100% sure on its being name for a child. But it's not Eigg!! Grin

I did wonder about the Durex connection Narked!

I don't think the whisky is an issue, Islay is famous for whisky too!

Ahem, Whisky (with an e is Irish). Sorry, pedantic Scot here. Wink

The whiskies are just named after the place where they are made. It's still a beautiful island, and a great thing to name a child after. I'd avoid using Rum or Eigg though Grin

Jura has always been a girl's name to me. I like it as such.
