Jura?

Just wondering what people think of Jura as a name for either boy or girl? Love the Scottish islands but Isla(y) is already popular and I'm not keen on Iona or Skye. I think of it as a boys name but DSis reckons ending in "a" makes it feminine...

Tiree the island is beautiful, we were there camping a few years ago, love it!

Hmm, don't think I'd get Famous Grouse past DP :)

I had no idea about the whiskey or the coffee. My first thought was Jury service.... BUT I like it very much. It has a lovely sound to it. I would think of it as a feminine name because of the "a" ending but can see how it would be unisex.

Oban is great too.

We got home late last night from Tiree so I've looked out at Jura a few times over the last week. Beautiful islands.

Not sure about it as a name. It's pretty but I don't think I'd want the whisky connnection.

I live in the Highlands alongside Speyside whisky trail... I had no idea Jura was a place Blush

Although I am severely geographically unaware/challenged :o

Yes, Islay has eight distilleries and Jura only one. but from my experience, people in Scotland, would think of the island before the whisky. Loads of children take islands' names.

When you talk about whiskies they are generally classed by region as Islay, Highlands, Speyside, Lowland, Campbeltown & the Islands.

Laphroig disappeared from my last post. But I'm liking the sound of Famous Grouse. Would that be first and middle names, or hyphenated? Maybe Bruichladdich, nn laddie?

I agree with downtonout scots roll our rs, where engelanders throw them away.

I wouldn't say the Jura was a brand name either. Jura whisky is from Jura.

Whisky "region"? Love the idea of Islay being a region Wink They are neighbouring islands. Jura whisky is made on Jura. I'd see the concern if the OP wanted to call her kid , or even Bells.

Jura is a brand name rather than Islay which is more a whisky region. Which is why I think its worse.

In Scotland it would sound different, but then our Rs are more likely to be heard as we roll them.

Jura, when spoken is it the same as 'Juror' - as in a member of the Jury? That's the first thing that popped into my head and I think is what picnicbasketcase meant by 'Jura number one'..

Other than that its nice.

Is it pronounced the same as 'someone sitting on a jury'?

I think the 'a' ending makes it sound more feminine.

I know a sula, she is lovely.

If you are I. Scotland I think Jura is fine. It's when you go outwith and people pronounce it differently you get the juror, durex pro lens.

I would go for it if you love it.

It's an island and a whisky.... not too keen.

For island names I prefer Ellis. (For a boy or a girl!)
