Jura?

Just wondering what people think of Jura as a name for either boy or girl? Love the Scottish islands but Isla(y) is already popular and I'm not keen on Iona or Skye. I think of it as a boys name but DSis reckons ending in "a" makes it feminine...

I know a little Jura (girl) - not in Scotland but the Mum is Scottish. Gorgeous name and no problems understanding its origin or spelling.

I've never come across Jura as a name, but actually I quite like it.

I'm from Oban, don't call a baby Oban, please, it's not a nice name...neither is Kerrera - and nobody pronounces that one correctly just from reading it either.

I know an Eilean, that's a nice name, unnusual, but pretty.

It's a lovely name for a dog. Reminds me of mountain ranges though so I wouldn't use it on a child.

My 13 Week old black lab is called Jura and she suits her name. Everyone we have met also loves her name and say it is very unusal and very Scottish. (We live in Scotland) and wanted a name that was both Scottish but away from the typical scottish names that we didnt mind shouting in the park. Jura it was!!

I didn't use the name in the end - DC2 turned out to be a boy and has a more traditional Scottish name :)

We considered Jura for DD

But then I also had Talisker at the top of the list if she'd been a boy....

I know a girl dog called Jura. I wouldn't call a son or daughter Jura and definitely not Oban!

Yes, there are 3 paps on Jura. It's not an anatomically correct island Grin

Jura is a brand named whisky - I used to work for the company that makes it. But it's prob overshadowed by the fact that it is from Jura. I like it, it's a bit different, although more suited to a dog or cat name of I'm being honest.

See, it's taken me all this time until greencolorpack's post to realise what "paps" actually means Blush.

Note to self: do not mention to DP before next year's holiday to Islay.

When we were on holiday on Islay / Jura, every time we saw them, my immature DH would nudge me, say something along the lines of "Look! Titties!" and start sniggering Hmm I got sick of this very very quickly.

The Paps of Jura are a topographical feature that people in Argyll know about, two titty shaped mountains. Don't move Jura to a school in or around Argyll lest the sniggering starts. Might be okay in other parts of Britain.

Jura is the German word for law, which is why I clicked on this post thinking surely someone is not considering naming their child this! It's pronounced yura in German.

I didn't get the whiskey thing, but Jura is a German word for Law, as in the subject, so that's what I think of and it doesn't seem like a name to me!

I actually know an adult Talisker - I think it's quite cool! And a Kiloran, as well as several Islas. Jura I'd definitely think island, not whisky, and don't see why it wouldn't work as a name.
