NigellasGuest · 01/09/2012 19:38

crackcrackcrak · 01/09/2012 19:26

LuckyOwl28 · 01/09/2012 19:17

My Aunty is godmother to a BOY called... Mulberry!

BalloonSlayer · 01/09/2012 19:10

I was reading a book about Horatio (! actually quite like that) Nelson today and apparently he was named after a relative his parents were fawning over.

BUT . . . one of his brothers was called SUCKLING ! Beat that. It was their mother's maiden name. Poor Suckling. Sad

Frontpaw · 01/09/2012 19:06

I've met a few Merlins. Not a bad name but...

MrsHelsBels74 · 01/09/2012 19:04

Think I heard a small boy being addressed as Sherlock today. Hmm

TapirBackRider · 01/09/2012 17:54

Billy The mother had been a true lentil weaving hippy in her younger days, she wanted her dcs to have 'free spirit' names.
She did realise that they might get teased once they started school so gave them middle names that she deemed reasonable.

I liked their names - the most unusual one I found was Mentish Mentish. That was his full name!

scarlettsmummy2 · 01/09/2012 17:52

Bacardi, yes really.

Frontpaw · 01/09/2012 17:51

My mother, of course, was heavily sedated with hallucinagenic drugs after having me, which explains my name.

Frontpaw · 01/09/2012 17:50

Wasn't Mercedes (cars) named after one of the owner/engineers daughters?

I suppose maybe its more intent - rather picking a name by accident, so naming a chid after the car than a nice spanish name. There are probably loads of names that if you dig far enough you'll find they have lovely meanings or great heritage.

Like Peregrin (sp?) - I heard of one (with his sister Tiger). Nice name, odd name, show-off-there-won't-be-another-in-the-class-name, named after grandpa, or animal mad parents name?

missmapp · 01/09/2012 17:38

KC !!- text speak names are on the rise!!

mathanxiety · 01/09/2012 17:34

Wasn't there a footballer of formula one racer or maybe a jockey named Greville .. can't remember..

There are lots of Angels (boys) in the hispanic community in the US. And lots of Mercedes, yes.

BillyBollyBandy · 01/09/2012 17:23

Claudette is just a version of Claudia

Ifind the most unusual of those names Tapir Sunny Alan!! Alan is a strangely conservative choice to match with Sunny. Although I suppose the same could be said for Susan with Star.

TapirBackRider · 01/09/2012 14:33

I went to school with girls named Shaunette, Claudette, and Jamesina - also boys called Mentish Mentish, and Daganaweda (Jones).

A woman I knew called her dcs Rainbow Rosie, Star Susan, Sunny Alan, and Poppy Cloud.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 01/09/2012 14:28

However else it's used Melina is actually a legitimate Greek girls name and means 'honey' (same roots as Melissa) and was one of our short-listed names :P

We (okay, me backed up by FIL) considered Angel for DS2 - also a legitimate Greek name and nothing whatsoever to do with an intense love of Buffy, honest

Misspelt, try-hard names annoy me but each to their own. DD knows sisters called Pebbles and Bubbles, but I'm not sure if they are their actual names - never heard them called anything but that though. Once you're used to them they don't sound odd any more.

redpanda13 · 01/09/2012 14:03

xmasevebundle - I would think there would be quite a lot of girls with the name Mercedes in America. It is a very traditional Spanish name and there is a large Latino population.
Some people's ignorance about other cultures/languages is breathtaking.

alemci · 01/09/2012 12:31

just remembered Shaunetta - seriously. anything with Etta has conotations of the Slobs.

SilverHoney · 01/09/2012 11:11

Savannah - I like
Ivy - I like
Tullula - I like

A lad a school was called Fraser Frazer because his Mum re-married. I always thought that was pretty harsh!

NotGeoffVader · 01/09/2012 10:54

Jenny - " bunny love" was not misheard, it was written on a card - spelled 'Bunnie Love'.

I don't mind unusual names and spellings per se, but when they are just stupid, then that's another story.

Like someone I know whose children are all named 'short' versions of proper names. I don't want to say them because I might out myself, but lets just say that they're similar to these:
Milly (girl)
Chas (boy)
Bobby (boy)
Billy (boy)

Understand that yes, these are perfectly acceptable nicknames, but why not just call them Millicent (or Amelia), Charles, Robert and William? No, these have the sorts of names above, and THOSE get abbreviated - 'Mills, Bills..." Shock

BeingFluffy · 01/09/2012 10:50

Greville is the surname of the Earls of Warwick and quite a popular first name.

LuckyOwl28 · 01/09/2012 10:39

I don't know if you live/were in Plymouth by any chance, but I know of a little boy called Denim and his sister is called.....wait for it....

Suede

No, I'm not kidding!!!
