Sappho--I can't, can I?

I started a thread asking for some strong girls' names for dd the other day and got some great suggestions. I'm really drawn to names ending with o: Juno, Dido, Margo(t) etc, all of which have been vetoed by dh. Anyway the name Sappho popped into my head today and I love it, but it's just too ripe for playground abuse isn't it? Or by the time kids work out who Sappho was, would they be a bit older and beyond the name taunting stage?

Along the lines of Astrid, I would suggest Solveig, another (beautiful IMO) Scandinavian name

TheTermagantToaster · 29/08/2012 22:36

Marino

Nope, you can't
And my DD is gay, and it would still be a dire name for her.

Sorry.

thisonehasalittlecar · 29/08/2012 22:26

She was an ancient Greek poet; the bit that is making people Shock is that the name is synonymous with lesbianism; the word lesbian comes from the island of Lesbos where she lived and Sapphic is another word for lesbian.

What about Aphra?

badtime · 29/08/2012 22:17

Hero, Leto, Io, Callisto, Enyo, Clio/Cleo etc. would all be easier to live with.
