Help me fall in love again with Amelie

RaeOfLight · 28/08/2012 19:29

We called our daughter Amelie and at the time I loved it. It was also the only name my husband liked so I really didn't give it enough thought.

Now 2 and a half years later I loathe it :-( Mostly because of the things I have read on here (why oh why didn't I discover this place beforehand?!!)

So PLEASE can you post some things to help me like it again? (please only post nice things tho - am sure this is total misuse of this board but I can't change her name now so need to find the love for it again!!)

Thank you!!

I liked my own name til I read MN babynames. Apparently I'm an uber chav and not simply someone with a Norwegian spelling of their name
Amelie is a gorgeous name.

fioled · 28/08/2012 23:21

I've just added Amelie to our future baby names list after reading this thread.

I think it is really pretty.

Newtothisstuff · 28/08/2012 22:38

I think it's a lovely name... Very pretty !! DD1 has a cutesy name and it suits her (even tho she's a monster) but I'm having the same problem with DD1 who is 15 weeks, we gave her a normal name but my Dh messed with the spelling (even tho I told him mn would flame him haha) I absolute hate it, it doesn't suit her it's far too harsh and I wish to god he hadnt done it, not to mention the fact she will hate us for it when she gets older hahaha I think Millie would be lovely for your DD's nick name then she's got 2 lovely names to choose from when she can make her own mind up Grin

Minstrelsaremarvellous · 28/08/2012 22:30

It's a beautiful elegant name and one that will stand her in good stead in years to come. You named her well! Remember that moment you first met her and she was "Amelie"...... That precious moment?
I've got a Tabitha too and I don't give a flying fuck what others think. She's my gorgeous, darling baby and I think her name suits her.
Wear your childrens' names with pride!

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 28/08/2012 22:21

I can't even think of names outside top 100!

AmandinePoulain · 28/08/2012 22:20

Well dd2's middle name is Grace so obviously I don't! Grin (Her first name isn't in the top 100 though Wink)

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 28/08/2012 22:20

I like rose and George! All lovely names. Lovely classic timeless names IMO.

YoullLaughAboutItOneDay · 28/08/2012 22:18

Sorry, that was to Chubfuddler, not Amandine!

YoullLaughAboutItOneDay · 28/08/2012 22:18

Good God woman, have you no shame? Grin

AmandinePoulain · 28/08/2012 22:18

I've got an Amelie, and I can't imagine dd with any other name. I've never seen anything negative on here (but then I've never done a search as she was 1 when I joined and therefore already named!) and in rl I get told it's a pretty name all the time. I think it's feminine, and popular enough to be 'known' but not too popular if that makes sense? We pronounce it 'Amm-eh-lee', dh is French and says it slightly differently if he's speaking French to when he says it in English, more like 'Amm-ay-lee'. I shorten it to Melie sometimes.

And yes, I also feel like all I say is 'Amelie, no!', but I think that'd happen with any name 5 weeks into the holidays! Grin

Chubfuddler · 28/08/2012 22:17

It gets worse. Ds is called George.

YoullLaughAboutItOneDay · 28/08/2012 22:16

One of mine has Rose Chubfuddler - I may be strung up.

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 28/08/2012 22:15

Love sophia love grace. Some names are popular for a reason.

Mumsnet likes mc names that are not in the top 100.

That's all!

PooPooOnMars · 28/08/2012 22:14

Its a lovely name!

Chubfuddler · 28/08/2012 22:13

And to compound my crime her middle name is grace. Woe is me.

HaggisMcNeeps · 28/08/2012 22:13

It's a beautiful, graceful adult name ( how many babies get saddled with cutesy little girly names?)
I love it and I bet you can't imagine your dd being anything else.
FWIW I went through name regret with both my DC for quite a while around the age of 2 and as a PP said its probably because you are saying her name a million times a day.

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 28/08/2012 22:13

Oh it's a lovely name, every bloody name gets called chavvy in here!

I think it's really nice, you can also use Millie?

My friend wanted Amelie nn Millie but someone got in first. (with Millie)

And first what it's worth I don't know any if them or seen any in baby groups etc.

Chubfuddler · 28/08/2012 22:10

Who cares what we think? My dd is called another mn hated name - Sophia. Do I give a fuck? Nope. She was nearly Isabella which is apparently completely beyond the pale. So what.

Amelie is lovely and even if I didn't think it was lovely, you did. Have more courage of your convictions.

YoullLaughAboutItOneDay · 28/08/2012 22:07

Oh Rae. I have seen people say my daughter's name is clunky, ugly and old-fashioned. You have to ignore it. Would you trust every MNers view on fashion, or food, or anything else. You have to remember that names are taste just like everything else.

Also remember that people are commenting in a vaccuum on here. They are effectively commenting on a word. They are not commenting on your daughter. Think about how often you actually think about someone's name when you meet them - fairly rarely, and usually in passing. Now think about how often you think about someone's name when you know and love them - never, unless you particularly love the name. They are judging the name like they would to a link to skinny cords, not her or you.

Also, to make yourself feel better, take a look at some of the names MN thread seem to like. Reading through many of those and realising I don't like them reminds me that I don't trust everyone on here's judgement automatically Grin.

elah11 · 28/08/2012 22:05

I think its a beautiful name but how are you meant to pronounce it? I always thought it was Amma-lee, like Emily but with an A? Is that not right?

savoycabbage · 28/08/2012 22:04

I have a friend called Amelie. She is lovely and beautiful and effortlessly stylish. I have always seen her name as a part of that.

My dh railroaded me into dd2's name. I don't love it but she has plenty of nicknames.

RaeOfLight · 28/08/2012 21:59

Thanks again for more responses. And I really like Tabitha!! (another name to add to the "should have picked that instead" list!)

SuzySheepSmellsNice · 28/08/2012 21:54

Oh it really is a beautiful name, very pretty!

RaeOfLight · 28/08/2012 21:49

Wildspinning- yes I totally get you. It makes me sad to read what some people think yet I have no idea why!! I'm glad it is possible to learn to love a name again and glad you succeeded.

I think I keep coming back on here to see what else I could have called her and I see so many lovely names and I feel worse!! So I do a search on her name just to find one or two positive things that people say and rarely find any!! Hence starting this thread.

SilkieChicken · 28/08/2012 21:45

My DD is Tabitha - either loved or completely slaughtered on here.

It's not chavvy and no it wouldn't be odd. (correct people!)
