Help me fall in love again with Amelie

Mimi is lovely as a nn, also like Amy as suggested by Viviennemary. You could call her Amelie-Mimi till she gets used the nickname, then just use one or the other as the mood strikes you!

It's a beautiful name, it is as others have said, 2.5 that's the problem.

At that age DD1 climbed, fiddled with every non toy item in the entire world and ran off constantly. Her name got completely worn out and it doesn't have an obvious NN.

Also FWIW (again!) I hate the names most MNers love, like Beatrice, etc - so old fashioned!

I'd just start calling her Mimi if you love it. Will your DH use it too?

I think this need to find a name that is different is all a bit strange really.

I find unusual names all sort of jumble together in my head in a muddle labelled 'unusual names' and I can't remember them at all which I don't think what the parents had in mind.

But maybe that's just me.

Amelie on the other hand is gorgeous.

Incidentally my middle name is Grace, and if I am ever lucky enough to have a little girl it will be her middle name too. And I have my faults, but no-one has ever accused me of being common, or lacking in imagination, so they can actually suck my dick.

Has she got a middle name you could use for a while. But there is nothing wrong with the name Amelie. Sometimes I think I wish I called DD a more unusual name rather than a boring everyday one. But she says she is happy with the boring name! What about Amy for short.

My 3 yo DD is Amelie. I think its gorgeous and can't imagine another name for her. For the first six months I wasn't sure (we had such trouble finding a girls name we liked at all) but now I love it!

WHATEVER NAME YOU CHOOSE some stranger on a baby name forum will hate it for one reason or another. Who cares? If they knew your daughter they would soon change their opinion. How many people on here say "i know a little girl called ...... and she's so sweet...i love that name now".

I live on the coast in the south west, I've never met any other children with her name, let alone 'chavs'. It's beautiful.

Despite its apparent popularity, I only know one Amelie and she is one of the loveliest, sweetest children I've met.

Rae have just tried to look on Mumsnet history for threads hating the name Amelie, most threads hate most other names too. The only one that I kind of agree with is that saying Amelie in a strong Scottish accent doesn't sound nice. I am not Scottish so not affected by that. We don't use any nicknames for Amelie, maybe Amm occasionally. We pronounce her name Amm-eh-lie. I know the French pronounce it differently, we didn't put an accent on her name. I think Mellie would work as a nickname for your dd. Hope it grows on you again.

Rae - Have a search of the name threads if you don't know what is 'wrong' with Rose and Grace. You will see that they attract pretty intense venom from some quarters as middle names. Apparently they are far too common and show no imagination and are meh and bland. They are the Louise and Jane of their generation as middle names (which they are - every second girl has them, but for good reason. They are gorgeous and go with lots of names).

George, Isabella and Sophia are all knocked for being too common, will date badly, showing no imagination, blah blah.

See how bonkers that all sounds? The negatives on Amelie are just as bonkers, you just can't see it. .

When I told DM Dd1's name, she said. "What?.... Oh?'. She had had a dream that I called her Emily Jane and was most confused it hadn't come true . She loves it now though. Don't place too much weight on first reactions.

I love Amelie, and if there is a DD2 she will be Amelie.

I also love Sophia, Grace et al. Mind you I do have a Freya Rose so I can line up to be shot down with the others .

My niece is called Amelie, and she is one of the sweetest, most loving, funny, warm, adorable, blue-eyed little darlings you ever did see. I wasn't sure about the name at first (because I am a triffic snob and thought naming a child after a film was a bit orf ) but I love the name now.

How can you hate your own child's name? Don't you just associate it with your lovely daughter?

Chubfuddler - I have a George and it's fabulous! I haven't read anything negative about George on these boards though...but probably wouldn't care if I did!
