Is this too "out there"? Have liked it since I heard of that actress James King.

Never mind whether you like it or not... she will spend her life turning up to events, matches etc to find she's been allocated to the boys team/dorm etc - and will I predict change her name by deed poll at 18 due to the midnumbing irriatation at explaining to every person on teh phone that yes her name is James and no she is a girl.

Haberdashery · 28/08/2012 14:58

How about Sid/Sidonie?

hattymattie · 28/08/2012 14:56

Jaime Summers - she was the Bionic Woman - thought she was dead cool when I was young (I think this is a roundabout way of saying go for Jaimie).

James - will give her problems for all the above mentioned reasons.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 28/08/2012 14:51

Around the turn of the last century (1900's) there was a fad for naming women after their fathers, by "feminising" the name, so lots of Thomasina, Williamina, Jamesina?

James for a girl is ridiculous.

Norman, on the otherhand... Grin

Badgerina · 28/08/2012 14:43

Only if you then go on to have a son called Jemima.

GlitterPinkRubberDucky · 28/08/2012 13:27

Not going to rise to that huw. Please read the entire thread including my subsequent comments before making such inflammatory comments. I was simply asking for sone opinions on the name as I always liked it for a girl. Simple as that.

Why would a parent do this to a child?

It's a kind of attention-seeking by proxy.

AmberLeaf · 28/08/2012 13:20

I knew a girl James. she was very posh.

I don't think its bad but she will be assumed to be a boy/man her entire life and will be constantly correcting people!

AmberLeaf · 28/08/2012 13:19

Courtney was more usually a boys name in the past.

Moominsarescary · 28/08/2012 13:14

Remus I always thought the same, when I was at school there were a few boys called Courtney (don't know how they spelt it) I didn't know any girls with the name

ScrambledSmegs · 28/08/2012 13:09

Actually, I know of an Orlanda, nn Ollie. Beautiful name, I think. I would use it for DD2 if she didn't have a cousin called Ollie already.

ScrambledSmegs · 28/08/2012 13:08

I do like the boys names as girls names idea too, just think that maybe James (an incredibly popular boys name currently, I know 5 under 1yo!) is a step too far.

Charlotte/Charlie is nice, as is Peta or Georgiana/George/Georgie. Makes me think of Nancy Drew! Shame that so many 'feminised' male names aren't particularly lovely (IMO only) - Thomasina, Roberta, Pauline spring to mind.

seeker · 28/08/2012 13:07

Or you could give your dd a girl's name? Just a thought.

manicinsomniac · 28/08/2012 13:06

James used to be used for girls quite frequently. But a long time ago. Socially, you just couldn't do it now (as I think you've been made aware of!)
Loads of names have switched genders but once they have actually switched (rather than become unisex - I guess there must have been a transition phase) it's pretty tough to change it back I imagine.

Did you know there's a names Jamesina? Bit bizarre but maybe worth considering if you want James.

Otherwise:
Alexandra (Alex)
Antonia (Toni)
Charlotte (Charley)
Davina (Davy/Dave)
Dannielle (Danni/Dan)
Edwina (Eddy/Ed)
Francesca (Frankie)
Frederica (Freddie/Fred)
Georgina (Georgie/George)
Harriet (Harri)
Henrietta (Henri)
Joanna (Jo)
Jessica (Jesse)
Matilda (Mattie)
Michaela (Mikki)
Nicole/Nicola (Nikki)
Olivia (Ollie)
Patricia (Pat)
Paula (Paul)
Peternell (Peter)
Roberta (Bobby)
Richenda (Rikki)
Samantha (Sam/Sammy)
Thomasina (Tom/Tommy)
Veronica (Ronnie)
Wilhemina (Will)

GlitterPinkRubberDucky · 28/08/2012 12:54

I just googled that apparently James was a popular girls name round the late 1880s, very interesting!

Anyway as I said before I was just asking for opinions because I always liked the name not because I am definetly going to use this name.

MrsBingo · 28/08/2012 12:51

It's really awful, sorry. Please don't do it!

KosherBacon · 28/08/2012 12:50

Have you seen Summer Heights High? Is an Australian comedy programme that has a girl in it called Jamie, pronounced Ja-may.

GlitterPinkRubberDucky · 28/08/2012 12:50

Haha never thought of the noble!

OP posts:
noblegiraffe · 28/08/2012 12:48

James says 'whoops, we wanted a boy'

Like Nigella.

GlitterPinkRubberDucky · 28/08/2012 12:47

Yes very true expatinscotand....was just a suggestion I was thinking about because i like it. Nothing is set in stone.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 28/08/2012 12:46

I was a bit of a tomboy and think tomboy little girls are cute.

I was a huge tomboy at school. DD has been a shock, I can tell you.

expatinscotland · 28/08/2012 12:45

What if she's not a tomboy?

GlitterPinkRubberDucky · 28/08/2012 12:45

Ooh I like the Charlotte/Charlie idea....hmm yes judging by this small sample reaction maybe it is too much.
