Is this too "out there"? Have liked it since I heard of that actress James King.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I love it! I'm of the opinion separate names for girls and boys are a hangover from the bad old days before something happened called feminism! That said, I'm not sure the world is quite ready for such a paradigm shift. But I'm definitely using it as a middle name if I ever have a girl.

MrsHelsBels74 · 28/08/2012 19:33

I've spent a lifetime spelling my surname out & it didn't make me feel unique, it made me feel intensely irritated.
Just because you'd liked to have been called James doesn't mean your daughter will. Kids can be incredibly cruel at times & use anything different to make fun of other children. Sorry but James is a boy's name & I feel sorry for your daughter if you decide to use this name for her.

GlitterPinkRubberDucky · 28/08/2012 19:25

I've spent a lifetime spelling my name as its not phonetic and its never been a huge bother explaining my name to ppl. It makes me feel unique. As for school, I'm not naming my child a name because everyone at school thinks its okay and easy. I think its a beautiful name for a girl, beautiful. I take all comments on board and agree it might be just a tad too unusual, but still think its beautiful. As for those posters who have been rude, I would advise you to grow up and try not to be so nasty when you are asked an opinion.

James for a girl? It's a boy's name. But if you want to give your DD a boy's name that's your decision. Samantha or Diane for a boy. Why not. Honestly, I despair.

blueglue · 28/08/2012 19:14

I know someone who has a name which is generally used for the opposite sex and it does cause problems. At a new school, the child got put in the wrong cloakroom etc etc - sounds minor, but when you have a lifetime of it, it must be very irritating. I have a name that is spelt unusually and I am embarrassed by it - I hate the spelling and wonder what my parents were smoking tbh.

firawla · 28/08/2012 19:14

I knew a girl called James once, she was from france. It did come across as a weird name and she was quite a weird person too, I dont think it works too well. Nice for a boy though

Kneedeepinshittynappies · 28/08/2012 19:13

I think it's lovely! If my mum had read this thread thirty odd years ago I guess I'd have a lovely, girly name but I don't. Yes there are times when I've been on the "Wrong" list for things or people have expected a man but tbh it's a great ice breaker and talking point so never really bothered me. At least it's an actual name, seen far worse!
If you would be proud to tell a stranger in the street her name, when asked, then go for it.

Pallindrome · 28/08/2012 19:09

Does no-one else remember the friends episode where Ross & Rachel are trying to decide on baby names??

Rachel: what about James?
Ross: ooh James yes
Rachel: for a girl
Ross: VETO!

First thing I thought when I saw the thread title!

lovechoc · 28/08/2012 19:08

Not a fan of this, sorry.

SuzySheepSmellsNice · 28/08/2012 18:59

Mind! Damn you AUTOCORRECT!!! Hahaha

cheesesarnie · 28/08/2012 18:58

myself and all four of my sisters were supposed to be called james.
when i had my first ds he was james. my dd (who is my eldest) was not james.

scottishmummy · 28/08/2012 18:58

it's as out there as boy called sue

bellamysbride · 28/08/2012 18:58

I have heard of James King, utterly beautiful.

CaseyShraeger · 28/08/2012 18:57

J King's name is Jaime. She briefly changed it to James for professional purposes, then very quickly changed it back. Which I think tells you a lot about whether she found it to be adorably "out there" or not.

SuzySheepSmellsNice · 28/08/2012 18:56

Jaime is a Spanish boy's name... Ming you, the Beckhams gave their Ds3 (?) a Spanish girl's name... clearly money can't buy you brains

jasminetatu · 28/08/2012 18:54

I actually love it for a girl. Just to throw a spanner in the works Wink

EightiesChick · 28/08/2012 18:53

James King isn't well known enough for it to cross over into mainstream use for girls, either.

EightiesChick · 28/08/2012 18:52

I think the fact that Olympia knew a woman who was 'really' a James but who calls herself Juliet is telling. That's what'll happen. She'll think of a different name to use once she's old enough.

seeker · 28/08/2012 18:49

But is the wanky name Susannah?

bellamysbride · 28/08/2012 18:45

Love it, but my son has a 'wanky' name so don't listen to me Grin.

scottishmummy · 28/08/2012 18:41

out there=wanky pretentious
why would you do that
at a push jamie

Blatherskite · 28/08/2012 18:25

I heard of a girl called James when I was younger and always thought it would be a lovely name for a girl...

But I think it's far too popular as a boys name at the moment and would cause all sorts of grief unless you are very, very posh.

I always liked Fred for a girl too but the one I knew of was shortened from Winifred which I wasn't so keen on.

I know of 2 men called Kim and Stacy and I know they get the mickey taken for their names so I guess it would work the other way too.

What about Ashley/Ashleigh? Lee/Leigh? Harry/Harriet?

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 28/08/2012 18:17

Quite ridiculous. Why on earth would you do this other than to be attention seeking.

InkyBinky · 28/08/2012 18:12

No no no no noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

exoticfruits · 28/08/2012 18:11

Mean - they will continually get put on the wrong lists for things.
