My DD2 is due in Jan & this is so far our face name. We'd possibly shorten it to Evie. My DD1 is Florence & I think they go nicely together!

0lympia · 26/08/2012 22:46

haven't read the other replies but ten years ago I would have liked this, now I think disney barbie.

emilysmi · 26/08/2012 22:41

LOVE it

TheBolter · 26/08/2012 09:02

Love it, I have a cousin called Genevieve. It's on my list should we ever - ever - have another dd.

Fireandashes · 26/08/2012 09:00

I love it, especially pronounced the French way but the English pronunciation is pretty too.

MrsJohnDeere · 25/08/2012 20:04

Lovely

lottiegarbanzo · 25/08/2012 19:56

Love it, I've long had in mind as the name of my hypothetical third daughter (have just had dd1!). I think it's a sophisticated adult name but also quite fun (perhaps an aural association with 'joi de vivre'). Plus it has so many potential nicknames; Gen, Evie, Viv. Very versatile!

aquashiv · 25/08/2012 18:32

Really like it.

nooka · 25/08/2012 17:32

I like the Welsh version Guinevere with nns Gwinny or Gwen. Either I think it's a lovely name but hard to spell!

5madthings · 25/08/2012 14:42

exotic you have just reminded me of another reason we didnt use it! we were going to use the english version but dp's aunt used to live in geneva and she insisted on pronouncing it the french way in a really twee voice with an annoying tone, when she did it dp and i just looked at each other and knew it would drive us insane forever more! so that and the fact that it is VERY likely to be shortened to jen/jenny is why we didnt use it.

we are very happy with our dd's name, but genevieve is a really lovely name, so its a shame that one annoying relative and the shortenings mean we wouldnt use it. but htat was something we thought about when naming ours, the shortened versions as they inevitably end up being used, particularly at school age and we wouldnt choose a name that we didnt like the shortened version of.

i do like ginny or vivi tho, but i still think it is more likely to end up us jen/jenny once they get older.

basically if you are happy with the shortenings then go for it, it is a lovley name :)

scarlettsmummy2 · 25/08/2012 07:46

It's lovely

iscream · 25/08/2012 07:45

I like it.

Pandygirl · 25/08/2012 06:48

It's a lovely name.

exoticfruits · 25/08/2012 06:42

If I was using it then it would be the English version so the French can cringe away!

loveisalaserquest · 25/08/2012 01:39

I teach two girls called this. One is known as Evie, the other Gen; they're both lovely girls. As a teacher, I'd say it's a Good Name.

NurseBernard · 25/08/2012 01:24

I think it's lovely - but apparently French people cringe every time they hear it pronounced Gen-a-veeve... :-/

OddBoots · 24/08/2012 23:27

I'm not sure I'd go with Ginny as a nn just because it's a term I've heard used for female genitals. Evie is nice though.

iheartmycat · 24/08/2012 23:22

Love it! It's top of my list, with the nn Evie - but having just seen Ginny, I love that too!!

BlameThePixies · 24/08/2012 22:36

Lovely - its on my shortlist with the NN Ginny!

WetAugust · 24/08/2012 22:02

Love it

ditavonteesed · 24/08/2012 08:28

I have one, she is little baby genie (well she is 6 now), I love it except she is quite clever and forward and good at reading and writing, but she still cant write her own name.

randomimposter · 24/08/2012 08:26

Love it, it was my mum's name. Lots of opportunities for NNs.

Nearly every name has some connotation or association - I think this one with the film is fine.

Olympicnmix · 23/08/2012 21:15

I have one, named after a relative, although she is rarely called the full version. If brutally honest, my naming tastes have changed over the years, so wouldn't choose it now, however dd loves her name and most people are positive, at least to my face! It means white wave.

Nicknames include Geni/Genna/Jenny/Eve/Evie/Vivi

5madthings · 23/08/2012 21:08

psammead this was so almost dd's name, infact when she was 3 days old i took her to a concert ds1 was performing in at school, and people said what was her name, and i said, we arent sure but Genevieve possibly, anyway what decided it for me was that even when i just introduced it as her 'maybe' name, people said on Jenny for short!! and i hate jen/jenny and i just knew that she would get it shortened to that and it woudl drive me mad!

i was planning that if we shortened it it would be to Vivi or something like that.

i really LOVE the name Genevieve, and if you like Jen/jenny then go for it, but if you dont like those shortenings then i would think carefully.

Momdeguerre · 23/08/2012 21:05

Love it.
