Please tell me the truth: is Alyssa a chavvy name?

We like the name Alyssa. I mentioned it to a friend who said it was one of the worst chavvy names she knows. On a par with Jaden, Brittney, etc.

I know we must choose the name we like but tell me if Alyssa gives you a trashy/common flavour?

Alyssa is the name of Dido, queen of Carthage, so it is quite fine as a classy name. Avoiding the "y" spelling, you can just use Alissa.

mathanxiety · 27/08/2012 15:03

They are flowery ways to convey the image the name conjures up for them.

CrapBag · 27/08/2012 15:01

Thats not what people are saying tough. I think saying that if you name a child Alyssa you must get their ears pierced at 3 months and saying things like trailer trash is completely unnecessary.

There is a happy medium though.

It's not really snobbery to point out that some names have negative associations for a lot of people. People judge - they shouldn't but they do.

CrapBag · 27/08/2012 14:15

My god! What a bunch of snobs there are on here!!

It isn't a made up name or a name that someone has changed the spelling, it is an actual name. But OP, please bear in mind that you will have to get her ears pierced at 3 months and will be on Jeremy Kyle labelled trailer trash if you use it. Hmm What bollocks.

I think it is a lovely name and it was a choice of ours for DD, although we did end up sticking to the name we originally chose which is hugely 'common' (now become no. 1).

Choose the name you like, not what some random people (and your rude friend) think is a 'chav' name.

Obviously you simply must name DD Persephone, Ophelia, Arabella or another posh sounding name to suit many people that are not the parents of your DD.

LightbulbSoup · 27/08/2012 14:04

It's my daughters name and how on earth can a name be chavvy.

Fair enough if you don't like it but It's so snobby to look down your nose at a child's name.

If you like alyssa then go with it but if you're not sure then there have been good alternatives on this thread.

NurseBernard · 26/08/2012 10:11

Not to my taste. We'll just leave it at that, shall we? Wink

CanoeSlalom · 26/08/2012 09:22

No, it's a lovely name :)

SrirachaGirl · 24/08/2012 16:33

I'm Canadian too, Lannie and I totally disagree. It's common for sure, but so are names like Madison, Brianna, Brielle, Jayden, Kayden, Braeden, Kailey etc. You probably know where I'm going with this...

mathanxiety · 24/08/2012 14:57

I know a teenage (girl) Sheridan. Her parents went to see The Snapper before she was born and mistook the Dublin pronunciation of Sharon for Sheridan.

In the US it would go with Heather, Brittany, Maddison, Kayleigh, Kayla, and other names you would expect to find on the cheerleading squad.

Lannie33 · 24/08/2012 02:19

I am Canadian. Here, Alyssa is a very normal, classy name, nothing trashy about it at all.

CaringMum28 · 23/08/2012 19:20

I'm afraid it is in London near me.
Lots of made up and ethnic spellings X

strugglingwiththepreteenbit · 23/08/2012 10:10

another vote for chavvy, but if it's any consolation I've taught an exceptionally lovely one in my time.

nenehooo · 23/08/2012 08:21

A quite posh and rich friend of mine has it as a middle name so I would say no. I like it!

Badgerina · 23/08/2012 08:04

SPsfanjo I tend to agree with you. The class paranoia that sometimes comes out on MN wrt to naming is laughable sometimes. Its so Hyacinth Bucket, I'd be surprised if there weren't a few more babies called Sheridan Grin

According to MN, the true test of a name's suitability is whether you can imagine it being the name of a high court judge! Hmm

Dream ON Mamas.

boyfallingoutofthesky · 23/08/2012 07:01

I wouldn't say particularly chavvy, just a bit made up and there are loads of these variant names around (Elisia, Elisa, Alesha) which do not have the classic cache of Alice/Alicia. What about Eliza, that is similar and much more classic/classy?

TuesdayNightClub · 22/08/2012 23:28

No I don't thInk it is at all! Although I prefer the spelling Elissa for a similar sound.

mercibucket · 22/08/2012 22:29

A lot of working class, or should I say, poorer people do use that name or similar, yes, imo so it does not shout out 'middle class live in the suburbs in a detached house' if that's what you're asking.

exoticfruits · 22/08/2012 22:17

Alicia or, even better, Alice.

dontcallmehon · 22/08/2012 22:12

I like Alicia. Much prettier spelling IMO.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 22/08/2012 22:11

Most definitely ultra Chavvy. You will need her ears piereced aged three months with that name.

ChickensArentEligableForGold · 22/08/2012 22:09

I know several. Lovely kids.

louisianablue2000 · 22/08/2012 22:07

With a y yes it is. Alicia is nice though.

NewRowSees · 22/08/2012 22:05

The only Alyssa I know is American. She's lovely, but from Jersey, and would admit herself to being the equivalent of 'chavvy'! (but in a good way :) )
