does Elsie-May work?

I'm a bit sad that Elsie has made it into the top 100, but we've used the other family names already! A combination of our grandmothers' names. Does it work?

I don't like any name that has 'May' as a 2nd part to it (or as a middle name) - it just sounds like the start of a sentence... 'Elsie may do this that or the other'. However, despite that, it is also really over used as a second part to a name Confused, which would also put me off, tbh.

Love Josephine though - lovely 'full' name, but also some lovely 'shortened' names there too. Not over used either. Smile

BananaPhone · 22/08/2012 00:06

Josephine is lovely.

But so is Jean. Jeannie is gorgeous.

Lannie33 · 21/08/2012 14:42

don't like Elsie. May is fine for a middle name.

strugglingwiththepreteenbit · 21/08/2012 14:37

nobody else in the family pregnant that I know off, but congratulations:)

We had Elsie May as our girl name (18 weeks) as it is also a combination of my nana's names ( are we related Grin)
We both had our hearts sets on this name i think it is beautiful, however reading the above posts I didn't realise it was quite so popular! Sad

Will need to get my thinking cap on again but totally gutted.

strugglingwiththepreteenbit · 20/08/2012 15:47

thanks all. It looks like a no! We told the dds that we're expecting today and once they were convinced we wouldn't be borrowing the names of any pop stars or harry potter characters they started calling it Josephine. Think it might stick.

Done. To. Death.

I work in a maternity hospital and last year we would have 1-2 a week.
Different spellings though, so they don't make the popular lists.
Elsie-mae.
Elsy-mai.
Elsie-May

Etc etc.

But it is pretty, I'll agree. Smile

SparklyGothKat · 19/08/2012 21:54

My Elsie has may as her middle name, we only use Elsie.

merrymouse · 19/08/2012 21:22

Love Elsie (but then I would go for Ethel if it wasnt for eastender's, and would certainly be seriously be considering Ida and maud). I don't think you need to hyphenate - give her the choice in later life whether to be an Elsie or an Elsie may.

Have to say I also like Bridget - I think this would be ahead of the trend of the next wave of old fashioned names.

Loopy4got · 19/08/2012 21:14

I have just read "Elsie-May" and thought it sounds absolutely beautiful, and a combination of grandmothers names makes it even better. Oh it is gorgeous!

ErikNorseman · 19/08/2012 21:10

Mum2kaison Grin

Anything - may/Mae/mai is just vomitous.. So naff and cutesy and just awful. You are naming a human being not a kitten. Adding a 'ie' in there a la Elsie, Gracie, Evie etc is just like stamping your dd with a mark saying 'I am not an adult to take seriously, I am a cute ickle girly' - awful.

MummyWithMenaces · 19/08/2012 18:52

Some food for thought, an earlier poster suggested Elspeth (Scottish version of Elizabeth) did you know it can be shortened to Elspie?

It's prettier (imo) than Elsie and much less common.

You do have some great family named in your list though!

Dogsmom · 19/08/2012 18:42

If your hubby doesn't like Elsie how about Elise or Elsa?

I wouldn't add 'May' either.

thegreylady · 19/08/2012 16:01

Emily Jean
I like Elsie though.... maybe Elsie Charlotte

Fireandashes · 19/08/2012 13:58

There are some lovely names in your wider family list. Not keen personally on Jean, Mary, Doris, Minnie, Ethel, Irene or Ida but just about any combination of the rest would be preferable (IMO) to Elsie-May.

Bridget Lucy, Bridget Emily
Katherine Maud, Katherine Elizabeth
Margaret Fiona, Margaret Louise
Charlotte Daisy

exoticfruits · 19/08/2012 07:32

No- hyphenating doesn't work after they get to about 5 yrs. I also hate Elsie- and so do the 2 elderly Elsie's I know - one kept it a dark secret and always called herself something else, she had done this from a young age and I was quite old before I even knew that she was an Elsie. If you take out Ethel, Maud and Ida any of the rest are better.

mathanxiety · 19/08/2012 07:19

*Jean-Marie would need to be Jeanne-Marie I think.

mathanxiety · 19/08/2012 07:19

ALthough Elsie and May are family names, Elsie-May looks faddish.

Jean, Mary, Doris, Emily, Bridget, Margaret, Minnie, Lucy, Florence, Katherine, Fiona, Elizabeth, Ethel, Maud, Irene, Daisy, Charlotte, Louise and Ida
A lot of lovely names there.

Mary Margaret
Mary Irene
Mary Louise
(or Marie-Louise? I have nothing against a hyphen when a name is French)

Lucy Margaret
Lucy Jean
Lucy Maud
Lucy Florence

Florence Irene
Florence Louise
Florence Emily
Florence Elizabeth
Florence Katherine

Katherine Mary
Katherine Elizabeth
Katherine Margaret
Katherine Louise
Katherine Lucy
Katherine Emily

Ida Louise
Ida Jean

Jean Louise
(or Jean Marie? Or Jean-Marie...)

Charlotte Mary
Charlotte Emily

Bridget Katherine
Bridget Louise
Bridget Margaret
Bridget Mary
Bridget Emily
Bridget Irene

Fiona Jean
Fiona Louise
Fiona Elizabeth
Fiona Katherine
Fiona Lucy

Margaret Lucy
Margaret Louise
Margaret Mary
Margaret Irene
Margaret Jean
Margaret Emily

My dd is Elsie Catherine (middle name). She is 6 and most people like her name. I don't see why you need to add anything onto it really!

SparklyGothKat · 18/08/2012 14:40

I really like it. In fact my dd3 is called Elsie may. She was born in may Grin

Nancy66 · 18/08/2012 14:38

May and Grace are really over used as middle names

manicinsomniac · 18/08/2012 13:53

I think it's cute.

And it doesn't matter whether you hyphenate or not, she'll choose to use it or not and it will be fine.

I'm a -Jane of the '-Jane,-Marie, or -Louise' era that has now been replaced with '-Rose,-May and -Grace' Grin My parents tried the whole thing for a while but it was too much of a mouthful and (apart from on obnoxious teacher I had right through secondary who insisted on always using every child's complete given name, grrr!) I haven't used the hyphen since I was about 4.

tvafr · 18/08/2012 11:34

I think Elsie-May sounds great, really cute

MammaTonic · 18/08/2012 11:20

How can a hyphen be 'chavvy'?

sneezecakesmum · 18/08/2012 11:17

hate hyphens too. very chavvy. elsie and may are both nice though.
