Just that really. I'm pregnant with dc2 and I love lots of names but wouldn't have the guts to use some of them - silly I know!!!

One of my faves for a girl is Luna/Lunar.

Just for fun- what are yours?

My DD has "Ursula" as her middle name, suggested by DH. I was a bit Hmm at first, but let him have it - it does mean "little bear" and has star connotations, and the St. Ursula nuns were a teaching order from what I understand, which runs in the family. So lots of things good about it - and she seems fine about it which is the main thing !

theQuibbler · 27/08/2012 12:28

I wanted Inigo for DS1 but was lol no'ed by DH. Once the pregnancy hormones dissipated, I could see why. The names I loved were Jeremiah (Jem) and Aurélien but couldn't use them because Jem doesn't make sense in French (French DH) and Aurélien is hard to pronounce for English tongues and we're in the UK. So the boys have got one each as a middle name instead.

JugglingWithFiveRings · 27/08/2012 12:13

Peregrine !

  • ooh, I see someone else thinks the same Smile
DizzyPurple · 27/08/2012 12:10

I love Aurelia too. Tempted if we have another but dont think DH would go for it.

Also Josephina

perfectstorm · 27/08/2012 12:03

Do agree some names are insane, though. I have no issue with the Oliver family, but it's horrible to give your children legal names like theirs. Petal Blossom Rainbow? What the hell were they thinking? Nickname, lovely. But how is a 45 year old with a good career going to like being called that? "Petal Oliver"? Seriously, nothing at all wrong with all the family calling her it, but everything with forcing it on her as a legal moniker.

perfectstorm · 27/08/2012 12:01

Anemone isn't that bad - I was at school with a girl called Amaryllis. Grin

PostmanPatsBlackandWhiteCat · 27/08/2012 12:00

Charon for a boy and serenity for a girl I just think they are a bit too unusual.

Carrie370 · 27/08/2012 11:56

I work in the NHS, and come across all sorts of weird and wacky names; most recently twin girls named Stella and Starr Hmm and another girl called Anemone.

I think it is cruel to saddle a child with an off-the-wall name - just my view. Also names that are cute at 3, but an embarrassing pain in the neck aged 30.

My older sister always, always wated to call her DS Tiger, and her DD Tallulah but was pressured into talked out of using them for fear they were 'too big' a name for a child to live up to. It remains her single greatest regret of motherhood as her DS (now 13) and DD (now 11) have both grown up into the embodiment of those names, even using them as nicknames since they found out they were potential christian names for themselves.

Because of that, when I was pregnant with my second DS and struggling to find an 'acceptable' name as nothing was as good as my much loved 'out-there' name choice, she advised me to have the courage to go with my heart and let my son grow into his name and make it his. Best bit of advice I ever listened to about naming a child.
I am now very gratefully the mother of Harley Phoenix, and he is every bit as special as his name suggests Grin. Have courage peoples- your children will be fabulous enough to pull off any of these names!!!

perfectstorm · 27/08/2012 11:42

I really, really wanted Rafferty, but DH vetoed, saying it was a name for a cat, not a child. He vetoed Gabriel as well, on the grounds that we couldn't guarantee he'd suit a name like that. Apparently you'd need to be cool, or you'd get eaten alive in adolescence over it. Hmm

I liked Lavinia as well. Again vetoed, though I'd have been allowed Violet or Tabitha.

mumzy · 27/08/2012 11:36

Cleopatra, Nemesis, Icarus, Io, Narcissus, Medusa, Tarzan, Calypso, Andromeda, Perseus, Pocahontas, Morning Star, Bounding Elk, Hawkeye Grin

StrawberrytallCAKE · 27/08/2012 11:21

I am having dd2 and I love Evangeline but dh is dead against it.....:(

Springjasmine · 27/08/2012 11:19

I have so many but DH is just so boring unconvinced!
Girls
Aurelia
Thalia
Summer - doesn't go well with our surname
River
Eden

Boys
Merlin
Linus
Lincon
Harvey

He hasn't suggested any name except Lauren, which I know 5 of!

WeeLors · 27/08/2012 11:11

scarletsmummy - both DP and I LOVE Hugo for a boy and and was in our top 2 for DC2 (due in OCt). We like it because its popular in South America (we spent 6mths travelling SA) but don't like the fact that its seen as really posh here. We're not remotely posh either so don't think we could get away with it, I can imagine lots of cats bum faces from family and friends.

I think the final death knell for using it was that we found out someone in Made in Chelsea is called Hugo, neither of us can abide those types of reality shows so don't think we could get over the association if we chose it Sad

HaveALittleFaith · 27/08/2012 09:59

I love Luna for a girl. My personal favourite is Bellatrix Blush yes Harry Potter inspired. Our surname is one syllable and starts with B so it rolls off the tongue. It's too off the wall though, isn't it?! I like Jeremiah for a boy but every time I suggest it DH sings

marshmallowpies · 27/08/2012 08:07

Ramons
Lamorna
Antigone
Flavia

DH would not have gone for any of them - he wanted to call DD Samantha or Emma!

DeathMetalMum · 27/08/2012 07:54

Df is a fan of slightly more unusual than myself fox, hunter, peyton all being favourites. I really like Skye but dont think I could use it. We are the opposite really some of name that I like are just far too popular. Harry and Jack.

Southsearocks · 26/08/2012 22:54

Loved Phineas but didn't use it Sad. Quite liked Cosmo too...

Moodykat · 26/08/2012 22:50

I love the name Clover for a girl. DH does not. Luckily we've got two boys so a non-issue!

scarlettsmummy2 · 26/08/2012 22:48

I love Araminta for a girl and Hugo for a boy. Unfortunately husband doesn't like them and we aren't remotely posh enough to get away with them.

goingtoexplodesoon · 26/08/2012 22:45

I'd love the names Hawk, Thor, Loch, Sky (yes, for a boy), Ivor, Falcon, Cedar and Wolf. If I have another DS, I might use Wolf for a middle names. I love Atticus and Finch too.

For girls, Acacia (it's not too unusual though), Teasel, Tigerlily (I think Lily's too bland but Tigerlily too unusual), Onyx and Echo.
