The boys name Ira. Dh has suggested it but I'm not sure.

Thankyou

I like it. Also like the Jewish name Asa.

Obergene · 17/08/2012 14:04

I love it. I also love Ezra and Eli (Elias).I am not Jewish but just lI've these names.

CanoeSlalom · 17/08/2012 14:02

I like it. I think of Ira Gershwin.

I'd only think I.R.A. if it was in capitals.

badtime · 17/08/2012 13:14

The only person I have ever met called Ira was a Russian woman - it was short for Irina and pronounced 'Eera'.

I'm from NI - Ira is the Irish Republican Army with capitalisation issues.

Baby is due Dec 20th. We already have Samuel, Joshua, and James in our family. The difficulty we have is that we have 12 nephews and 5 brothers between us, and we're not keen to repeat any of the nephew names! even though they are some of my favourites.

I love it, think Gershwin, don't think it's feminine at all. But, but...the IRA thing is clearly problematic, which is such a shame. How about Asa?

MooMa42o · 17/08/2012 10:57

I think it is a lovely name, i did not make the connection with the IRA whatsoever & i am british, if you are worried this could be a common issue maybe you could spell it with a h on the end, Good luck picking a name :)

Aworryingtrend · 17/08/2012 10:50

Makes me think of the author of the Stepford Wives, Ira Levin. Thats the only Ira I've ever heard of. Agree the IRA connection could be tricky though.

lottiegarbanzo · 17/08/2012 09:48

Back on the 30s song-writers theme (hence expecting any Ira to be a witty, cultured, Jewish New Yorker) how about Ivor (Novello)? It's a name I really like anyway.

Badgerina · 17/08/2012 08:31

cherry That changes it for me - I like the sound of Ira, but agree with those who think it looks like IRA. But, Eira looks much nicer, has the same sound and I like the meaning - especially if OP's baby is due in winter. OP?

annelid · 17/08/2012 07:58

Thanks for the input!

Like it a lot.

cherrypieplum · 17/08/2012 07:45

In Welsh snow is 'eira' which I've heard pronounced 'ira'.

Rachog · 17/08/2012 07:44

I wouldn't know how to pronounce it so that would put me off.

MrsFaffnBobbocks · 17/08/2012 07:43

Sorry OP but it sounds v feminine to me. I know it's not meant to. (Wonder how it'd go down in the average playground....)

Ira Gershwin comes to mind. Think it is a great name, as is Ezra.

EdithWeston · 16/08/2012 23:11

I would think of the IRA if ever I saw it written down. This would be a very difficult association in some towns and communities.

The other association I have is that it is also the Latin word for "anger" (as in "Dies Irae")

HollyGoHeavily · 16/08/2012 23:09

I thought IRA - i bet a lot of British people would....

UnnamedFemaleProtagonist · 16/08/2012 23:07

I live in a Jewish area but am not Jewish. I didn't think IRA at all and I like it. A lot.

emmyloo2 · 16/08/2012 23:03

I like it. It's Jewish. I also like Ezra.

Wetthemogwai · 16/08/2012 22:59

Seth rogan plays an ira in a film, thats the first thing I thought of

I think it's nice but a bit...girly? I know it's a boys name but just sounds a bit feminine to me

Devora · 16/08/2012 22:57

There was a thread about this a couple of months back. I really like it, and would never think of the IRA connection, but then I'm Jewish.

lottiegarbanzo · 16/08/2012 22:56

Ira Gershwin and other Jewish men. Would go with Cole (Porter).

lisaro · 16/08/2012 22:55

Also thought of IRA.
