What names would you choose?

I think mine would by Ayla for a girl (from the earth children series) and Harry for a boy (from Harry Potter Blush)

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Arabellasmella · 13/08/2012 11:53

Cassandra (I capture the Castle), Lucy (Room with a View) and Sophie (The tiger who came to tea!)

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 13/08/2012 11:48

I had a cat called Ishmail too.
I keep naming my pets brilliant names because I think I am done having babies
Then I have more babies and i can't use them :(

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 13/08/2012 11:45

I have an Atticus!
But he's is a dog

I would chose Shasta. What a brilliant name

kez1212 · 13/08/2012 11:41

Also really like Boo, but decided against that too.

theTramp · 13/08/2012 11:04

Holden, Bo, Esme, Elizabeth, Darcy and Rohan would all be literary names that I liked. But all bar a couple have been used up by friends with kids.

Merrily Watkins - I love those books and it is a lovely name.

goodstuffhappens · 13/08/2012 10:57

My Grandma's best friend was called Hermione...she was Scottish and it sounded so beautiful in her accent. Her nickname was 'Mione' which was pronounced 'My-a-nee' V. pretty I think but husband is Potterphobe so DD won't be Hermione Sad

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 13/08/2012 10:19

Lucy from the Narnia books. DD was nearly a Lucy right up and until she was about an hour old and we decided she suited a different name.
Matilda or Sophie from Roald Dahl.
Ramona as in Quimby.
Sara from The Little Princess.

Can't really think of boy names so much. Can't explain why. Henry as in Huggins from the Ramona books maybe? Grin

almapudden · 13/08/2012 10:08

colourme Spot on! Wine

I loved those books.

Mama1980 · 13/08/2012 10:08

I called my ds after a character from Daphne du Mauriers Jamaica inn Smile if I were to have a girl would be pearl after the daughter in the scarlet letter or arwen I think

kez1212 · 13/08/2012 10:06

Ooh Blipbipbeep good choice, we have a Jude too! He was very nearly an Atticus though, as was his brother but not brave enough. Maybe if we have another.... Though I also like Ishmael and Gabriel.

For a girl... Hester, Scout, Arya, Tess. Did want Harper but not anymore!

Blipbipbeep · 13/08/2012 08:55

I really wanted Dorian and Jocelyn for boys and Ayla and Fraya for girls all got vetoed except Fraya, but we had a boy so his name is Jude :)

Thingymajigs · 13/08/2012 08:51

Éowyn. I absolutely love this but I can imagine a lifetime of spelling it out and trying to explain that she's not named after a Hobbit. I'll have to keep it for a middle name.
Sansa, Arya, Juliet, Tyrion, Tess, Arwen, Samwell, Cersei (its a shame she's an incestuous psychopath because the name is quite lovely).

Badgerina · 13/08/2012 07:54

I've done this already. DS1 is named Oscar after Oscar Wilde AND the baby from Ghostbusters 2; Abraham after Abe Sapien from the Hellboy comics; and Zooey after Zachary Glass from the J.D Salinger novel, Franny and Zooey.

Currently decided on Spike for DS2, after the Elvis Costello Album. Haven't settled on middle names for him yet...

For girls it would have to be:
Anne (Eliot, from Persuasion and of Green Gables, two of my all time favourite characters)
Jane (Eyre)
Elizabeth (Bennet)
Dorothea (Middlemarch)
Isolde (obvs as in Tristan and Isolde but also from a modern novel called The Rehearsal)

For boys:
Will (Ladislaw from Middlemarch)
Jude (as in, the Obscure)
Gabriel (from Far from the Madding Crowd)
Angel (from Tess)

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 13/08/2012 01:35

Titian (Swallows and Amazons)
Elinor (the flower from LOTR)
Clowance (Poldark)
Barnabas (The Dark is rising)

I am named after Catherine Earnshaw. My mum thinks Wuthering Heights is romantic. I tried to point out that Catherine is a nutter, but she just doesn't get it! Confused

CrunchyFrog · 13/08/2012 01:29

DS1 is named for a character from Asimov's robot novels. Grin

If I had another, I would love to use Beren (Tolkien)

foolserrand · 13/08/2012 01:28

Scout (to kill a mockingbird)
Althea (Liveship trilogy by Robin Hobb)

Can't think of any boy names...

monsterchild · 13/08/2012 01:21

ooh, Nyx, i loved Ged, but Jed is more hillbilly than wise wizard.

monsterchild · 13/08/2012 01:20

I used to love the name Atticus until I was at a lecture where the speaker (using TKAM as inspiration) kept pronouncing it "adequate". He was telling us all to strive to be an "Adequate Finch".

Since then I've really considered myself a superlative sparrow, and decided I would giggle too much if I ever named a child that...

Nyx · 13/08/2012 01:18

I did name DD after Lucy from Narnia - I always said if I had a girl she would be Lucy. And had she been a boy, she'd have been Ged, except we'd have spelt it Jed.

zaphod · 13/08/2012 01:12

Jean louise To Kill a Mocking Bird, Samuel, The Runner (Cynthia Voight), Charles, Little House on the Prairie, and dh named the other two.

ColourMeWithChaos · 13/08/2012 01:05

alma is it from The Belgariad series? My DBro was obsessed with them when he was a teenager and I read the one summer when I was stuck inside with glandular fever.

almapudden · 13/08/2012 00:48

When I was 14 I decided that if I had a son, I would call him Kheldar. Wine for anyone who can correctly identify the works of towering literary genius book(s) I got that one from.

ColourMeWithChaos · 13/08/2012 00:41

Holden from Catcher in the Rye, Owen from Prayer for Owen Meany, Jude from Jude the Obscure or Leopold from Ulysses for a boy.

Elizabeth from Pride and Prejudice, Anna from Anna Karenina, Esther from The Bell Jar or Hester from The Scarlet Letter for a girl.

ObviouslyInvisible · 13/08/2012 00:12

Lyra (His Dark Materials) or Arya (A Song of Ice and Fire)

Faramir (LOTR) or Ron (Harry Potter)
