What names would you choose?

I think mine would by Ayla for a girl (from the earth children series) and Harry for a boy (from Harry Potter Blush)

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Frikadellen · 13/08/2012 21:05

Ayla was on my list but dh vetoed

dh got his one though with Phoebe (the Catcher in the Rye)

For boys there wouldnt be a name laughs

posypoo · 13/08/2012 21:02

I did - Catherine (Wuthering Heights). Sadly though, Anne of Green Gables doesn't like how it's spelt. How am I going to deal with that one?

AlwaysHoldingOnToStars · 13/08/2012 20:59

issynoko i have laughed very loudly! Those are great names, i really love Heffalump.

UniPsychle · 13/08/2012 20:47

I have an Atticus (well as a second name anyway, wasn't quite brave enough for a first.) If he had been a she, it would've been Merrial (Merri for short) after a character from a Ken McCloud novel.

theTramp · 13/08/2012 20:33

Astro - I think we had similar tastes. Did Daryl in Mallory towers also make your fave list?

MrM and I are talking names at the mo. Weirdly some improve with familiarity and others really don't. I have two fave boy and two fave girl names, which I fully expect to change as time goes on, however we're not at all in synch with either. With one exception, I am bringing MrM around to Inigo as a (boys)name. Which would be awesome. Of course a fairly ordinary middle name would be required to balance it out, just in case.

dementedma · 13/08/2012 20:25

For those with an Emily, the first book we ever bought dc1 was called 'Emily's letters to james,'. Its lovely.

Astr0naut · 13/08/2012 20:21

WEll, she's actually a Josephine, but I'm sure her tomboy years will be Jo (like I longed to be George from Famous five).

She's got a fair bit of hair for a 9 month old. If she's like her brother, she will have a mane. Envy

MeUp · 13/08/2012 20:17

I would chose Orion or Sheldon - both characters from Pandoras Star by Peter Hamilton.

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 13/08/2012 19:44

Also, while I think of it, www.gutenberg.org has the rest of the Anne books, plus some other rare LM Montgomery books. I discovered these two sites when I was a very bored temp and was promptly enthralled. They also have some Angela Brazil and all classics - anything out of copyright, basically, depending on what has been transcribed and uploaded. I wiled away many a happy hour reading lots of Wilkie Collins and Frances Hodgson Burnett as well.

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 13/08/2012 19:34

greylady, go to www.gutenberg.net.au, click on Free Ebooks, then go to authors beginning with M. You'll find all the Emily books under Montgomery, plus a few other more obscure titles which I didn't even know existed until I found this site. If you copy the text into Word, Notepad or other format and email it to your Kindle, your Kindle will automatically transcribe it into readable format. Et voila!

thegreylady · 13/08/2012 19:16

I was hoping to find Emily of New Moon for my kindle but its not there:(

DD is named after the famous Miss Lizzy Bennet. Grin

DS is named after the not quite so famous lead male character from 80's teen movie sixteen candles... Blush

TheGashlycrumbTinies · 13/08/2012 18:54

Scout, Jem and Atticus, all from o Kill a Mockingbird.

scentednappyhag · 13/08/2012 18:49

Johnny- House of Leaves
Thursday- The Thursday Next series by Jasper Fford
Lincoln- The Jeffrey Deaver novels

purpleloosestrife · 13/08/2012 18:46

Yossarian or Atticus for a boy.

My DD's middle name is Storm after a character from a book DH had read years and years ago.

I liked the name (but not particularly the character, which is not what OP asked but what the hell!) Mercedes from Shakespeare - but would never use this is RL!!

I was a bit pony mad as a child so my DC could have been called Black Beauty, Flicker and Brumby !!

Merrin · 13/08/2012 18:42

Will from The Dark is Rising

MatriarchalDreams · 13/08/2012 18:41

We have named my daughter after one of our favourite literary characters - she's Arya which is actually for an elf from the Inheritance Cycle novels (Eragon) rather than from Game of Thrones, however, I have also read Game of Thrones and like the Arya in that too. She's only a month old but think we're going to be spelling/pronouncing it rather a lot, not too bothered by that atm, we knew that would probably be the case when we chose an unusual name, however, she might not thanks us later in life!
I had Atticus on my boys' list as To Kill a Mockingbird is probably my all-time favourite novel, however, DH wasn't that keen, I think he might have been a bit more open to it if he'd actually read it as I've been trying to get him to do for years! We also had Lyra on our girl's shortlist.

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 13/08/2012 18:26

I misread katniss as catpiss once and it stuck in my head for the whole book. Sad

theTramp · 13/08/2012 18:24

Ditto on the dislike of the Dark Materials books (I could rant on awfulness for ages).

Jo - fantastic! Does she have lovely hair?

CleoSmackYa · 13/08/2012 18:17

Ooh and Shakespeare. Shouldn't forget that!

CleoSmackYa · 13/08/2012 18:17

I had an Imogen from both The Forsyte Saga, and What Katy Did.

issynoko · 13/08/2012 18:15

I know 4 Lyras. And couldn't stand those books myself.

My children are called Heffalump, Snape and Wonka.

C0smos · 13/08/2012 18:07

Great topic
Not mentioned yet
Ofred from handmaids tale - did we ever get her real
name I can't remember
Katniss from hunger games

Scout was always on my list when I was younger, but Demi Moore ruined this for me

Astr0naut · 13/08/2012 18:07

THEtramp, it had to be Jo. Even ended up marrying an older man. But he's not German. ANd we don't have a boy farm. Grin
