Ralph is awful. Sick and penis. Please don't!

Agree with you on Rafe and Rufus, but either is actually better than Ralph.

Incapinka · 09/08/2012 07:13

I know 3 Ralph's. All thoroughly nice people. Whilst I have read forever and watched the Simpsons, the Ralph I always think of is from the thorn birds. Beautiful book and great name Smile

xmasevebundle · 08/08/2012 17:54

Ive never heard ralph being a penis in a book Blush

No i hate rafe. So thats a no go!!

Rufus sounds like a dogs name, Rufus hound? One out keith lemons show...

I like Bella's suggestion of Rufus.

JollyHockeyStick · 08/08/2012 16:11

Yeah, I don't like Rafe at all. Sounds like Rape.

VolAuVent · 08/08/2012 16:07

It's OK. Never met a real Ralph, knew of one pet.

Rafe sounds pretentious to me.

Ephiny · 08/08/2012 13:31

It also makes me think of Ralph Vaughan-Williams, though I think he pronounced it 'Rafe'...

Dominodonkey · 08/08/2012 13:13

For a less immature literary connection (I am a Judy Blume fan too!) Ralph is the hero of 'Lord of the Flies' and he is a fantastic character.

busymumto2 · 08/08/2012 13:12

Ralph is very cute but I do prefer Stanley.

My eldest is Seth and youngest Harry, I'd love to have a 'Teddy' to join the gang! Smile

sostressedsostressed · 08/08/2012 13:08

I used to know a guy called Ralph at College.

BellaOfTheBalls · 08/08/2012 13:06

Judy Blume was a teenage writer. Forever was a book about two teens first major relationship, losing their virginity etc. the sex scenes in it were rather graphic at the time!! I agree Ralph & Rafe are different names and it annoys me that Ralph Fiennes pronounces it Rafe. Smile

It sounds like you like sort of classic names, so:
Albert (Albie)
Rufus
Rafferty
Alfred (Alfie/Freddy)
Bertram (Bertie)

If you like a name, go for it. Our DS2 has an unusual name that is the same as a character from a late nineties kids TV show that they still show now. I thought people would mention it constantly but they haven't, plus I figured that in 4 years when he gets to school it's unlikely that it will still be on TV! Grin

Ephiny · 08/08/2012 12:16

'Forever' would probably seem quite tame to today's kids tbh. It wasn't just the sexual content though, it was the bizarreness of it (WTF? Why does the penis have a name? Why is it the most memorable character in the book?)

I can't remember the actual boyfriend's name, now I think of it. But you bet I remember 'Ralph'!

rathlin · 08/08/2012 12:12

Will this baby's generation be reading Judy Blume? I sort of like it and makes me think of the actor who played the Karate Kid (the original one), Ralph Machicho or something like that. For me it's one of those names you can only imagine in an adult rather than a baby.

Ephiny · 08/08/2012 12:12

Leo is lovely though.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 08/08/2012 12:11

Ralph is a PENIS! HAHAAHAHA!

Ephiny · 08/08/2012 12:11

I wouldn't, I immediately think of the Judy Blume book and memories of passing it around and sniggering at school. Maybe that's just my generation though!

I like the 'Rafe' pronunciation, but don't like the look of 'Ralph' written down.

TheonlyWayisGerard · 08/08/2012 12:10

Not good. Slang for 'to be sick'. Unless its pronounced Rafe I guess. Just don't team it with the middle name Scoop, like someone I know of Confused

seeker · 08/08/2012 12:09

So do I everlong- I was thinking of a similar sort of name without the other connotations!

Just Blume and vomit sound for me- I'm really sorry, but you did ask!

And Ralph-pronounced-Rafe is a bit....I don't know... trying to be posh?

How about Rufus?

DiscoDomina · 08/08/2012 11:41

It is on my list but DH hates it- says it reminds him of a term of reference for vomit, along with Hugh and Barth!

BobbiFleckman · 08/08/2012 11:23

another one who thinks of Judy Blume immediately
