Lyra? Pretentious?

I had loved the the name Lyra when pg with ds, obviously didn't get an opportunity to use it. Since then I've wondered whether it's a bit try hard or made up and pretentious. I have a very unusual name myself (which I have always loved) and if I have a dd would like to give her something that's not run of the mill, but don;t want it to look like I'm 'trying' to be different. Anyways, I'm due imminently and dh re-suggested this name today.. so opinions please....

Beautiful name.....not at all pretentious! It's the name of Sophie Dahls daughter!

Invader Really? Is it quite popular/common then? I'm awaiting this national stats to check it out!

Have run into some small Lyras. It's a fine name!

Pretty-immediately think of Pullman. I quite like Pullman though, so that's fine :)

I imagine if I were to have a dd she would be wild, bold and fiesty- I think the name could suit her.

Love it

Lyra is an older name than lara, it is a constellation. I think it's a great name. Makes me think of a wild and bold girl. Go for it.

Tommy yes I like honesty- fire away!

I love Pullman, and the character- that's part of why I loved the name. I like Lara too, but I'm not sure it's enough?

Although I'm kind of thinking that simple names are more unusual these days1

Makes me think of Lycra. How about Lara instead?

Tommy · 06/08/2012 22:17

if you want honesty..... It doesn't sound pretentious to me - just made up.
How about Lara?

Lovely name, not pretentious but I associate it with the character from the His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman.
