How common is Poppy?

It's on my short short list for Dd1 and love it more and more. But I don't want a name that is everywhere.
I don't actually know any Poppy's and know a lot of kids through nursery preschool DS1's. But we are in central London primaries so not many English kids!! How common is it across rest of UK?!

4 under 3

BeattieBow · 06/08/2012 06:02

having said that, it was around number 50 in the list when I named her, so there would be fewer of her age group than baby Poppys (as it is now much higher in the list I think).

BeattieBow · 06/08/2012 06:01

i'm in London and have a Poppy. She was the only one in her primary school (now aged 11). Theres one more in the senior school she's going to.

at the lower end of the age scale there were none at ds's nursery.

CandiceMariePratt · 05/08/2012 23:05

Is the most popular name at DDs school, must be about 5 of them.

Rainbowsurf · 05/08/2012 23:00

It's very common in Hampshire! My 5 year old is Poppy and every other child I meet at our local SureStart seems to be called Poppy!!(I wouldn't go for any Flower names if I were you!)
PS her nick names are Pops, Popsy and Popsicle

jaffacakehips · 05/08/2012 20:12

I know 4 Poppy's in Central London...all under 3. Sorry Smile

Yellowchair · 05/08/2012 19:43

I know three all between 11-13yrs old.

Bathsheba · 05/08/2012 19:41

I'm in Scotland and I have a Poppy. She is the only one in her school.

She is quite often Pops

mummanj · 05/08/2012 19:30

Im in Norfolk and have a Poppy. She is lovely and get lots of complements on her name. Great choice!

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 05/08/2012 13:16

I have a Poppy and am in London. At school she is usually the only Poppy in the entire school! So not very common.

But if I had a pound for every person who told me they has a dog called Poppy I would be rich!

It's a lovely name...it gets lengthened and her sibs call her things like Popsicle or Poppelina. But mostly she is just Poppy.

susiegrapevine · 05/08/2012 10:50

If you really wanna know go to the office of national statistics website they list the top 100 names going back few years not sure how many but you won't be able to get this years so if there has been a sudden surge in popularity of the name this year (ie all the kids in your ones class at school eventually) you won't know anyway. Still its a good starting point. Plus the bounty site normally gives you a chart of how many in a 1000 kids in the uk are called by a name going back a couple of years or so. Hope this helps.

AngryBeaver · 05/08/2012 10:42

I have one. Pops ,The
Popster,Poppadom,Popa-doodledoo,Popstar!
She is great. There was one other in her UK school. One here in NZ.
But, we ;lived in the NW of Uk...and I know it was quite popular about an hour from us!

VolAuVent · 05/08/2012 10:41

I know of one under 5. Lovely name BTW :)

MacMac123 · 05/08/2012 10:34

No not international students at my dS pre school just the sort of mix you get where he is in minority and most don't have English as first language and no names like Ava, Sophie, Emily or the likes there!!!
Ok so am getting impression it's popular but not say as popular as Ava, Sophie, daisy etc! (all of which I also like!)

I have a Poppy! I'm in the north and know one other who is a teenager. Some people shorten my dd's name to Pops...I don't as I don't think it needs a nn and don't like it shortened.

JennerOSity · 05/08/2012 10:28

LemonOCOGTurd · 05/08/2012 10:27
