Middle name for Persephone...?

Any ideas? Our surname is a double barrel along the lines of Watson-Ingram (but more unusual)

We were thinking of Imogen? But maybe something shorter would be better.

What can I say - good choice!

Spuddybean · 08/08/2012 06:36

Yes we have Ham :)

Thanks to everyone - even the rude ones! It has just made me even more sure i love the name.

Personally i prefer Persephone Grace or Persephone Joy. But DP doesn't like those so begrudgingly as it is half his baby or so i'm led to believe, it was a pretty wild xmas party! i will concede this time.

CecilyP Cecily is our choice if we are fortunate to have a second DD :) CeCe for nn. Not so sure if we have a second boy as we cannot agree on anything at all apart from Lysander

Has the OP not already decided on Persephone Eve (which is a good choice I think)? Surely no more suggestions are needed!

BooBumpDaddyandMe · 07/08/2012 22:32

Persephone & Lysander are both beautiful & unusual choices! I agree that Persephone needs to be followed by a short or single syllable name - but perhaps not something as flat as Jane or Anne - Grace might work or Rose?

LordOfThe5Rings · 07/08/2012 19:11

Anya :)

CecilyP · 07/08/2012 18:55

I quite like it but think something short and simple would best for a middle name, so I think Jane or Jean, Claire or, my favourite, Persephone Grace.

mathanxiety · 07/08/2012 04:25

Persephone Margaret
Persephone Katherine
Persephone Laurel
Persephone Valentina
Persephone Joy
Persephone Eirene
Persephone Aurelia
Persephone Blythe

Spuddybean · 06/08/2012 20:13

Of course i will :) The name Persephone was never in question, i was just looking for a middle name. And thanks to this thread we have decided on Persephone Eve.

So cheers everyone.

Persephone Claire

tiddlypool · 06/08/2012 19:54

Just call your DD whatever you like. I did.

Spuddybean · 06/08/2012 19:52

Of course people are allowed to be bitter and vitriolic (unfortunately there seems to be a lot of it on MN). But if i had asked if people liked Persephone then i would have expected it. But having just asked what middle names go with it, i presumed people who didn't like it would have better things to do than click and say something nasty.

If i said 'what colour is the sun?' i wouldn't expect people to click on saying 'oh you're so pretentious' or 'you posh sun lovers make me sick'. I would just expect people with no idea to ignore it and get a variety of strait forward suggestions like 'yellow/orange/red' and of course some wag to say 'black and white and read all over!' :)

This has just surprised me that's all. I suppose if it was politics or art i could understand the 'passion' but a name of a stranger, really?

Tbf, this board can be as (if not more) brutal at AIBU at times.

Honestly, Persephone is not a name I would choose and I don't particularly like it, but if the OP and her DH do, that's the main thing.

You definitely need a short middle name, Eve or Rose or something like that. With two surnames, it would be overwhelming to have a long first and middle name.

OP, people are allowed to be vitriolic about names if they like, you are going to have to grow a thicker skin if you're posting about your choice on an internet forum I'm afraid. Names polarise people.

Spuddybean · 06/08/2012 19:30

'Because it's not he OP who's going to have th name. She has no idea whether her daughter will love having an "exotic" name or hate it. It it deeply unfair to make that decision on behalf of an human being unable to consent'

seeker no one has any idea whether their child will love the name they are given (which is why people have abbreviations and middle names that they can use). I know loads of people with 'common' names who hate it and i have been given nothing but envious compliments on my name.

I'm really not sure how one can generate such bitterness and vitriol for a name. Did a dog called Persephone bite you when you were a child? Or is it the 'poshness' that it represents for you?

gorg name as is lysander for a boy.

where we live there are loads of people with unusual names....

even basic names people ask - is that with an s or a z, is that with an e or without....

i think some people live in the sticks and just dont hear unusual names!

GetOrfMoiRing · 06/08/2012 18:13

I also can't believe that some twat would come on here and post a biscuit. I mean why bother?

GetOrfMoiRing · 06/08/2012 18:12

Please don't be upset by some of the mad comments on here OP.

I think there are plenty of greek names in use in this country which despite being uncommon people generally know how to spell and pronounce them - Penelope, Phoebe, Hermione, Hebe etc.

In any case it is spiteful to call you pretentious imo.

GrasshopperNchipmunk · 06/08/2012 17:58

Oh spuddy, please take no notice of the negative comments. It's a beautiful name.

If it makes you feel any better, my FIL can't spell, or pronounce either of my childrens names (and their not unheard of at that!!) He would like it if they had common names as it would make it easier for HIM! Grin it doesn't bother us, we just have a giggle at his expense for being an ignorant sod!

remaincalm · 06/08/2012 17:51

I love the name Persephone. It is on my list but not on my DH's. I don't think it matters if you choose a long middle name. Persephone Imogen sounds lovely. Smile

IawnCont · 06/08/2012 17:37

I wasn't trying to upset you: I just explained the reasons I didn't give my child a similar name.

maxmillie · 06/08/2012 17:35

spuddy - havent read the rest of the thread. I know a 7y old Persephone and it really suits her and I really like it. She is known as Persephone and Sephy and apparently had no trouble learning to spell it. The only thing that would have put me off it if I had a girl was that my sister thought it was Percy Phone from the spelling! But so what, once corrected once, will never happen again.

boohoohooshouldhavewongold · 06/08/2012 17:20

Spuddy dont listen, your baby, your choice. Now move away from this screen have a cup of tea and enjoy your lasts couple of weeks brfore Lysander or Persephone arrive.

Spuddybean · 06/08/2012 17:05

Honestly, i have been really shocked at how unpleasant people are being on here about my choice of name. You do know i am a 37 wks pregnant woman with feelings? I know i shouldn't let it get to me but i am really genuinely upset at just how incredibly hurtful and rude people are. Why is this acceptable?

To repeat - i have a long greek unusual name and have never had problems. People ask me to spell it especially over the phone, but that's not a big deal. The DS's spelling reaction of Purse Phone is almost right, so what's the problem?

For the record i did just ask of short middle names that went with Persephone - not come along and call me names and insult me. If you don't like it fine but why say nasty things? And if people make assumptions of what my daughter 'is' or is not then so what. They may be right, they may be wrong. We are rarely one thing.

I have never introduced myself as my full name. It is an official name which i can shorten and do. Why call someone Elizabeth and call her Lizzie? I also don't know anyone who uses their middle name, so why would not giving her a middle name be any different. I have my nans middle name i never use it but it's there if i want to.

GetOrfMoiRing · 06/08/2012 15:24

I thinK Persephone is a lovely name. Whether you need a middle name with a 4 syllable first name and a double-barrelled surname is debatable.

I think more people than you would think know how to pronounce Persephone tbh. It's not that unusual. And I am far from being in a middle-class bubble.

Re Posey - I don't think you can dictate a nickname, that's my only advice. I picked a name which I didn't think would lend itself to a nickname. I learned my lesson there!

BobbiFleckman · 06/08/2012 15:21

beware of Lysander. People will mark you down as a Jilly Cooper fanatic, which may not be the effect you're after at a guess.
Leander may avoid that.

seeker · 06/08/2012 15:20

"Seeker like I said, I have that problem with my surname. But it's not a big deal. And my sister has the same with her first name but it's not had any sort of detrimental effect on her. I just don't see why the OP should reject a name she loves on the basis that some people might not be able to pronounce it first time."

Because it's not he OP who's going to have th name. She has no idea whether her daughter will love having an "exotic" name or hate it. It it deeply unfair to make that decision on behalf of an human being unable to consent.
