I've finished with 3 dcs so this is hypothetical for me. i've just been reading a book about a girl called Dora and genuinely thought what a lovely name... untill a little cartoon popped into my head singing 'find the map'.

what other lovely names have been spoilt for you?

Judas, I love the sound of it but it's just never going to work.

BegoniaBigtoes · 05/08/2012 22:24

Eve - I always dreamed of using it for a girl, when I was young and it was really rare, I loved the meaning and it was so stylish and pure...

Now it feels like almost every little girl is called Eve/Evie and I know several who don't match my dreamy vision! (sorry parents of eves)

To a lesser extent the same thing has happened to my own name too, which used to be rare. Bummer.

letseatgrandma · 05/08/2012 22:19

Teacher here too -funny though that it's always the same names who are the badly behaved kids though!

Yes, I agree! It seems to be Connor, Reece/Rhys, Alfie, Luke, Caine/Kaine/Kain/Cain and Daniel round here!

birdofthenorth · 05/08/2012 20:11

Cameron, thanks to David. Always loved it but ruined now!

Harry/ Harold thanks to Shipman who lived near us (we know lots of the victims families). Myra Hindley was a local too -perhaps we should move!

Leona just because Leona Lewis is so very famous now she owns the name. Carrie, because of the likelihood of people saying "as in Sex and the City?".

Bianca.

I know a truly gorgeous Ethan btw. Cheeky, chatty, very bright.

TellyBug · 05/08/2012 19:59

Harper. I quite liked it before the Beckham's stole it! I live in fear that a celeb will use my fave names before I get a chance to pop one out!

OlympicTeaDrinker · 05/08/2012 19:53

haha Ah Bluemoon I know a couple of awful Ethans but I also know 1 who is lovely and he has a lovely sister called Mia Grin

Also a couple tainted for me because of horrid people in school

My neice is called and amber and her mother picked it when footballers wives was at its peak Confused my niece is a lovely and thankfully the association is no longer there.

cookielove · 05/08/2012 19:41

Joshua - 10 years in nursery still waiting to look after a lovely Joshua Grin (however if you have a Joshua i am sure yours is lovely)

I adore Cole and Bella neither i can use because DP doesn't like names that are characters in shows, which essentially rules out every name grrrrr!!

BlueMoon74 · 05/08/2012 19:40

Haven't taught a nice Mia yet! Seriously. And i'm 7 down and counting Or Ethan for that matter.

LondonNadiy · 05/08/2012 19:36

Bella/Isabella or Edward, less so with Jacob - anything from Twilight really, totally ruined a load of perfectly nice names! Jade, but never liked it anyway! Same with Saskia. Harper and Pippa are both a little tarnished as well, which sucked cos I loved them! Alex was ruined by a bitch in school, same with Sarah - never met a Sarah who was nice to me! Also, Hermione - may never have actually used it, but never can as while I like Harry Potter, can't ever name a child after a character!

AKMD · 05/08/2012 19:21

Jade
Madeleine, which I loved :(

shockers · 05/08/2012 13:46

Possibly not, but it was mentioned upthread... along with Adolf, admittedly.

Clawdy · 05/08/2012 13:24

Don't recall Myra ever being regarded as a lovely name...Hmm

Ilovedaintynuts · 04/08/2012 13:29

Jade does unfortunately sound thick because of the late Jade Goody.

I can't imagine Sharon or Tracy ever sounding classy again Blush

Ilovedaintynuts · 04/08/2012 13:25

Before I had daughters I always wanted a Madeline, but Madeline McCann was abducted just before DD1 was born and he name will be forever tainted for me.

I'd never have a tinky winky or a po now.

shockers · 04/08/2012 13:21

I agree about people forgetting the association after a time. I probably wouldn't think twice about Ben or Leah as names now, but at the time it was still quite raw, like Madeleine is now.

I still wouldn't consider Myra though, I feel for all those lovely Myras out there.

boohoohooshouldhavewongold · 04/08/2012 13:19

My name, it was ruined by a sitcom in the eighties and I have been tarnished ever since Sad

shockers · 04/08/2012 13:17

Oh no MrsHuxtable... that's my name! Sad

MrsHuxtable · 04/08/2012 12:03

Philippa / Pippa Sad

mumnosGOLDisbest · 04/08/2012 10:41

Oh countess you didnt call your dd kermit did you?!?! Grin
Wouldnt worry some of these names are lovely. Ive already seen 3 variations on family names with reasons id never considered. Ben is now quite popular and noone thinks about little ben needham. Id guess eventually madeleine will be the same.

Jade? I don't have one, but I can't think of anyone who's spoiled the name.

I do think a tragedy attached to a name makes parents think twice. When DS1 was born, a little boy called Ben had just disappeared from a Greek island. ExH wanted to call DS Ben, but it just felt too sad to me.

The same with DD and Leah, because of the young girl that died after trying ecstacy Sad.

TheCountessOlenska · 04/08/2012 08:20

Oh no, my DD's name has been mentioned!

The only one I agree with here is Madeline - because she was a child and because we still don't know what happened to her, just seems ill-fated to me now Sad

GhouliaYelps · 04/08/2012 08:18

Oh Isabella - my god there are at least 1000000 at dd school

Damien (The Omen)

Claudia makes me think of the petulant brat in Interview with the Vampire

I also agree with Madeleine and Meredith Sad

Jakeyblueblue · 03/08/2012 23:40

I loved Isaac for my ds until my stepson told us there was a boy in his class that smelt and ate his own bogeys. Needless to say, ds name is not Isaac! Grin
