I've finished with 3 dcs so this is hypothetical for me. i've just been reading a book about a girl called Dora and genuinely thought what a lovely name... untill a little cartoon popped into my head singing 'find the map'.

what other lovely names have been spoilt for you?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

sadly it's in my head now. in my sisters defence she didn't come up with it herself - her ex husband and his mate used to say it behind someones else back. some people are such charmers!

Gunznroses · 09/08/2012 18:43

I would never had thought that, and i don't think most people would, so your dsis clearly has a "strange" for want of a better word, mind.

hzgreen · 08/08/2012 19:29

we were going to have Ophelia for our girl until my sister said that people would put "tits" after it Blush

Gunznroses · 08/08/2012 19:11

havent read the whole thread but.....

"Blair" or Blaire - thats the name of the girl Excorcist!!!! NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!NO!

BlueChampagne · 08/08/2012 13:43

I think Blair has had it for a wee while!

pookamoo · 07/08/2012 22:35

Willow = Buffy the Vampire Slayer for me.
I like the name a lot and it would have complemented DD1's "tree" name also for DD2 but I couldn't shake Alysson Hannigan from my mind!

BooBumpDaddyandMe · 07/08/2012 22:17

Made me pmsl!!! My fil & bil are Ralph & it'll be the middle name of our 2nd son due in Nov - now I'm remembering my teenage reading highlights and tittering to myself in the bath!!!

MadStaringEyes · 07/08/2012 22:17

I have an Alexander, if i had a £ for every time i've been asked 'like on peppa pig?' as though its an odd name. I half wished I'd pushed for my first choice.

DontmindifIdo · 07/08/2012 22:16

Oh and Willow is ruined because of the film. (But that might be more DH doing crap impressions from the film...)

DontmindifIdo · 07/08/2012 22:13

Dora is a gorgeous, pretty yet strong name. It does, however make me think of Dora the explorer so I couldn't use it.

I also couldn't use Lola as the Kinks song would be playing in my head (and I have to stop myself humming it when around my friend's little girl called Lola).

Similarly, Myra - but I think it won't be a 'bad' name for much longer, I'm sure one more generation and the reputation will have gone.

I love Eve but as others have said, it's become very popular (not 'common' as i don't think it's 'chavvy', just it's a '4 in the class')

I do think Imogen has been rather ruined by slutty BB contestant, I really want her to disappear now so I can get pregnant again soon and then hopefully we'll have all forgotten her in 9 months time.

For the boys, Dwayne or Wayne. You just couldn't.

Callum makes me think of Callum Best - no one wants their little boy to grow up to be Callum Best.

womma · 07/08/2012 22:09

Thank you Ham xxx

MadStaringEyes · 07/08/2012 22:07

I have an Ethan. He hugs other children who hit him.

I've not spent an hour in my friends little boy, called William, company without him whacking at least one person Grin

Ham69 · 07/08/2012 22:04

I love Dora, womma. Beautiful name.

womma · 07/08/2012 21:55

I have a Dora so ner

mumnosGOLDisbest · 07/08/2012 21:18

I know a brother n sister ben and holly, always want to ask where nanny plum is Grin

Maybe we shouldnt worry about associations with names. There are a few on here that i needed explaining as the reasons hadnt crossed my mind.

Still couldnt use the lovely name Dora though :)

Lol Dolomites you are funny Grin

I think there is no need for me to answer the question, right?!

DolomitesDonkey · 07/08/2012 17:15

I didn't say the "original" Adolf was German, but perhaps you've heard of Nazi Germany?

Although tbh it wouldn't surprise me.

worldcitizen · 07/08/2012 17:14

Yep

squoosh · 07/08/2012 17:04

He was Austrian but he and his name are certainly mostly associated with Germany. For obvious reasons.

worldcitizen · 07/08/2012 17:03

Oh and yes, that name is spoiled as hundred of thousands of Germans, don't know about Austrians, have changed their name or their children's names after the war.
Also, that name is on German birth records almost non-existent...for reasons most could surely imagine why Wink

worldcitizen · 07/08/2012 16:57

(Adolf) German of course...

Why, as the Hitler Adolf was Austrian Hmm

DolomitesDonkey · 07/08/2012 14:49

I worked with an Adolf (German of course), born around 1950. What the holy Fuck were his parents thinking?

CleoSmackYa · 07/08/2012 14:25

Ellie, Jake, Millie and Bonnie, simply because I've known dogs with the names!

Also, Sarah, because I've never met a nice one. Sorry to any nice Sarahs.

juneau · 07/08/2012 14:17

Well if I had a daughter I dreamed of calling her Princess Tiaamii Crystal Esther, but then Jordan went and used it. Damn! It's SUCH a lovely name Grin

My DB and DSil have two kids called Bella and Edward. I'm pretty sure they did it unknowingly as they're mid-30s and I can't see either of reading or watching the Twilight books/films, but what a strange coincidence.

threeleftfeet · 07/08/2012 14:12

Very diplomatic Martha Grin
