Days away from my baby being born and still on the fence so looking for the feedback to help with my decision making. Which of these names do you prefer?

Silas Matthews or Drake Matthews

INSIGHT:
My last name is fairly common so looking for a first name that's not nearly as common yet still sounds nice.

The name "Drake" is paying tribute to his half-English and half-Chinese background (it's Year of the Dragon and Drake means 'dragon' in old English). Naturally everybody assumes it's named after the rapper, which is kind of annoying but i can live with it since he's also Canadian and I like him. My mom associates it with the meaning of "male duck" (i didn't even know that was the meaning until she said it)

"Silas" we just like how it looks and i think it's a bit more unique. Where Drake seems to have a strength element to it i find Silas to be charming and slightly less pretentious/trendy sounding.

Middle names are going to be "David Rui" (pronounced ray).

Silas is a bit of an evil name in my mind- no real reason for that but those are just my associations.

Drake is an awesome name, it does remind me of ducks but in a good way, those lovely mallards with shiny green necks. It's very masculine.

I would go with Drake.

Weenugget · 09/08/2012 08:02

I'd go for drake because I use a computer database
At work called silas! Also was he not the baddy in Heroes? Drake Matthews is a nice name

noelstudios · 08/08/2012 22:10

Silas!

Have you read Silas Marner by George Elliot?

Drake to me just means male duck I'm afraid. Or Sir Francis. Great name though.

Olympicpark · 08/08/2012 22:00

Silas!

BooBumpDaddyandMe · 08/08/2012 21:57

I love Drake & its meaning - really lovely - great middle names too! Think you have it cracked there!

tummytickler · 04/08/2012 16:39

Silas

Spuddybean · 04/08/2012 16:03

vote for Silas - Si is a nice nn.

Drake sounds like an inanimate object to me. A drake. but still not awful, just a bit american, surname as 1st name type thing.

princessbonnie · 04/08/2012 15:50

hi

i love drake

squoosh · 03/08/2012 16:16

And I see that other people have already made that link. Silly me.

squoosh · 03/08/2012 16:15

Joey

squoosh · 03/08/2012 16:15
Grin

Just realised why I think that. Duh!

Joe from Friends played a soap opera doctor called Dr Drake Ramoray on Days of our Lives

thisisyesterday · 03/08/2012 16:13

Drake does make me think of ducks, and Drake Ramoray. but I don't dislike the name.

Silas is fabulous though and it's what I would choose

squoosh · 03/08/2012 16:13

Silas.

Drake sounds like the name of an American soap opera character.

newby2 · 03/08/2012 16:09

Silas Drake Rui Matthews. Love it!

rachel234 · 02/08/2012 21:31

I like them both but prefer the meaning of Drake.

4boyzmum · 02/08/2012 20:47

Love Silas. So different. Drake reminds me of 'Drake and Josh' that my DS used to watch on TV. Annoying!

Or you could have Draco, but people might think you were Harry Potter mad.

AlwaysHoldingOnToStars · 02/08/2012 20:11

I prefer Silas. I love Silas!

Like Greenwing says, Drake reminds me of Friends and male ducks.

drtachyon · 02/08/2012 11:52

I like Drake better.

And isn't Drake water related? Given that a drake is a male duck? Never heard of the rapper either.

Greenwing · 02/08/2012 11:50

A vote here for Silas.

Not Drake please! It makes me think (a) of quack quack as it means male duck and (b) that it is a joke name, hence 'Dr Drake Ramoray' who was the character played by Joey in a bad soap opera in the plot of 'Friends'. Clearly a name for a buffoon in America.

Silas at least is a real name, eg the classic novel 'Silas Marner' by George Eliot.
Good luck!

VolAuVent · 02/08/2012 11:45

Silas - a great Biblical name. Silas David Rui sounds really good.

Drake is a duck or a surname.

matthe1 · 01/08/2012 23:56

Tried to think of good water related names but couldn't come up with any that i was overly fond of.

'David' is paying tribute to my father who passed. Besides, i think "Silas Drake Rui" kinda sounds like a super villain.

mathanxiety · 01/08/2012 23:45

Would you consider a water name as it's the year of the water dragon?

Musomathsci · 01/08/2012 23:35

Why not use both and lose the 'David'? Silas Drake Rui?
