Need more help with girl names

We know we are having a girl (DC2). DH would like a shortlist that we choose when she is here (I am 37 weeks). I think that is bit odd as all newborns look the same to me!

Anyway, I thought we had it sorted and our favourite name was Lucy. However as the end approaches it doesn't feel right anymore, maybe a bit dull? Or not strong enough? Plus we used to have a cat called Lucy so I know we are going to face resistance from parents/family.

Evelyn was a strong contender, it was my Grandmother's name. But I think it is too formal or old for a small child/baby, and worry that Eve is too popular.

Then there is Amber, Freya and Lyra. All of which I like but not sure "a" and "er" names go well with our surname (which ends in "er").

What I am looking for, but can't seem to find is a strong name, not too popular, but has to be "normal"! Dh won't tolerate anything that isn't traditional/normal.

HELP!

Sounds like you're fighting an uphill battle..good luck.

To me, if you're looking for a strong name, I'd think of something with a harder consonant. I don't have a good sense of your name style but some 'strong, normal names that don't end in -er...

Chloe
Clara
Catherine/Katrina
Calla/Callia/Callie/Kayla/Kylie/Kyla
Cora
Camilla, Carmen
Tess/Tessa
Monica, Veronica, Annika
Penelope
Tia, Pia

Raining are you married to my other half?! He is exactly the same as your DH. Anything I suggest is too weird/posh/old ladyish...his are boring! So frustrating isn't it.
Our (his) shortlist is Lucy, Sarah, Emily (I prefer Emily of those as I don't actually know any). Others we have discussed are....
Madeleine (too posh apparantly! Confused)
Imogen
Ava
Neva (he thought I'd lost my mind at that suggestion!)
Lydia
Maria

Good luck! Smile

lucy and hazel dont feel right to you which leaves freya and amber. both are pretty, i prefer freya but then amber is less commonly heard. i wouldnt worry too much about your surname, ours ends in an er sound and i have 2 dds ending in a and er. tbh its never even crossed my mind.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/07/2012 20:38

I like Hazel best of the four you've just listed and then Amber.

Naomi
Clover
Helen/a
Lydia
Maeve

If my bump had been a girl she would have been Matilda. But we're expecting another boy so it's not to be.

raininginbaltimore · 30/07/2012 19:12

See we know four Hannahs, I teach loads of Abigails, Rebecca is someone in close family.

This child will never have a name.

Lucy is a good name.. I have a Lucy Olivia

Traditional/normal names that arent too popular:

Abigail
Rebecca
Hannah
Emma
Annabelle

raininginbaltimore · 30/07/2012 17:28

I love Ottilie. But there is no way on this world I can get that past DH. He rejected Elodie as he said it sounded made up!

Dh likes very "normal" names. Sophie, Charlotte, Emily etc. I however had/have a very popular name and don't want it to be top 10. I love unusual names, but have given up suggesting them as he says no.

mumnosbest · 30/07/2012 17:11

amelie is close to emily or emma?

raininginbaltimore · 30/07/2012 14:08

Right after conversation with DH today, we have a short list of:

Lucy (he still likes and doesn't see what is wrong with it- did I mention that it was our cat's name, although she died two years ago.)
Freya At the moment, both our favourite (well after Lucy, which he still likes!)
Amber Both like, worry that our surname also ends with "er"
Hazel One of his favourites, but for some reason I just don't like it much.

All of those are DH's suggestions. DS was his suggestion too, and although I know love Ds's name I don't feel like I am getting a chance to name any of my children.

We have rejected- Rose (he doesn't like), Lyra, Lyla, Scarlett and Evelyn.

He also likes Emily. Which I don't hate, but it feels a bit meh to me.

What about

Aibhlin ... Aibhlín is the Irish Gaelic variant of Evelyn

Aileen ... also variant of Evelyn

Ava ... some forms may be intended as phonetic variants of Eva and Evelyn

Aveline ... Latinate form of the name Evelyn.

Avila ... Avila may also be the source of Evelyn.

Eileen ... Variant of Evelyn

Evelina Latinate form of Evelyn

DH is very fussy. There are loads that I love. But he rejects. Actually Amber was his choice, and he suggested Hazel too. (I don't know why, but I don't like Hazel). He would reject Hermione, Hebe (too weird- his ideas), Mabel, Elsie, Ivy, Iris (too old lady).

Others that I like that he has rejected- Beatrice (thought we could call her Bea), Grace, Elodie, Eloise, Matilda, Harriet, Phoebe.

Like I said, if I was naming her it would be easy!

Rose is lovely, and I do actually really like Lucy (maybe you could spell it Lucie to make it more unusual). My mums middle name is Evelyn and she has utterly hated it all her life. If she was commenting on your thread she would beg you not to call her that!

raininginbaltimore · 29/07/2012 22:29

I love Matilda, but DH said no. I also love Martha, but another no.

Argh, if I was naming her it would be easy. He is very fussy!

I know they are an adult more, but I can't see Evelyn as a baby/child/teenager.

My DD is Lucy (Lucinda), other names we liked were Ruth, Charlotte, Matilda, Iris, Martha and Elizabeth.

Olympicnmix · 29/07/2012 22:26

Lucy and Freya are lovely

You are right about Evelyn imo.

Some others maybe: Hebe, Alice, Helena, Grace, Beth
