Still in search of that elusive boy's name...

due date getting ever closer, and we are still undecided as to a name for dc4 - our first boy.

we think we have narrowed it down to:

Arthur- love this, but it doesn't lend itself to shortening/nicknames easily (other than Art/Artie which we are not keen on)

Rufus - dh reckons we shouldn't, as any child is unlikely to be red-headed (we are a bond-haired/blue eyed family). Possibly a bit too nicknamey/informal as well. don't know.

Caspar - maybe a bit too out there, and of course the friendly ghost issue. Not sure it goes well with our other dc.

Peregrine - would be known as Pippin/Pip. I love Pippin, not so keen on Peregrine - dh has decided he doesn't like Philip. Is there anything else that could shorten to Pippin?

Pippin... would you really do that to someone you loved? My nn is Pip and I love that for boys/girls/men/women... but Pippin?

Love Rufus, for all shades Smile.

Geranium3 · 29/07/2012 22:23

not keen on your names, how about
linus
silas
edward/teddy
or the very best name ever..........
Raphael!
Best of luck

poppydaisy · 29/07/2012 22:04

Arthur is ok but I don't like Artie (mainly because the one I know gets called Artie Farty Blush).

poppydaisy · 29/07/2012 22:03

I like Caspar and Quentin. Or how about Cassian?

JaffaSnaffle · 29/07/2012 22:02

Really like Arthur. I know a baby called Arthur, and it always seems such a lovely name.

The others I am not so keen on tbh.

baskingseals · 29/07/2012 21:20

really like Rufus, wouldn't worry about the red-headed thing.

what about Arlo?

could i be nosy and ask what your girls are called?

emdelafield · 29/07/2012 21:16

How about Fraser? Bit like Caspar but not so out there?

johnnycomelurky · 29/07/2012 21:14

I like Rufus best of your list. If Caspar is an issue due to the ghost, what about Jasper? Also think Miles is nice name that is similar to your names.

shoobidoo · 29/07/2012 21:06

I like Arthur and Caspar. Also like Pippin very much.

Really like the suggestions of Tristan or how about Quentin? Or Dominic?

PineappleBed · 29/07/2012 17:15

Really like Arthur and rufus.

Pippin could be short (long?) for Perry.

You'd get casper a lot with caspar so you'd need to decide if you're bothered by that.

Other idea: morris?

MoonHare · 29/07/2012 17:05

I like Arthur and Rufus from your list in that order. If you don't like Art/Artie then don't use them, other adults won't if you don't and there's no telling what nn any child will be given by their friends.

I do know a little Caspar, probably every adult he knows thinks 'friendly ghost' at first but then forgets about it and is too polite to say anything anyway. Oscar is quite popular around here but I suppose you've considered that already. I like the suggestion of Caspian.

I'm afraid I agree with the general consensus on Peregrine, I think it's try-hard. I'm not sure the nn Pippin or Pip would have much of a shelf life anyway - and then if you're not keen on the name in full, what would he be called beyond 6-7yrs? In the same vein how about Montgomery nn Monty?

I like the suggestions of Oscar, Tristan and Gregory. Other more unusual name suggestions; Selwyn, Wyatt, Boyd.

Best wishes in making your decision - we're struggling with boys names too!

GnocchiNineDoors · 29/07/2012 16:29

Im sorry I really do not likeany of your names, however I dont need to like them....you do.

What about Christopher (nn Kit) or Alexander

Sirzy · 29/07/2012 16:29

The only one on your list I like is Arthur

Peregrine is awful and I'm not keen on pip/pippin can't see any child over 5 wanting that as a nickname!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/07/2012 16:27

Ah - just seen your dh doesn't like Philip.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/07/2012 16:26

Philip = Pip. I think it's cute. Then again, I rather like Peregrin too (used to have a pet rat called this!).

Don't like the others.

VolAuVent · 29/07/2012 16:18

Rufus and Caspar are both great names.

Alfred (Freddie or Alfie)
Felix
Nathaniel
Miles
Solomon
Edwin
Alexander
Tristan

EugenesAxe · 29/07/2012 15:48

On a memorial in church this morning I saw 'Sigfrid'. I quite liked it, but I know DH would veto. However, in case you also like unusual names I thought I would let you know.

The others... are mainly nice. Rufus reminds of 'Never Been Kissed' - it's the school hearthrob's 'new word' for cool - so it's a bit annoying from that perspective. If you have never seen the film, don't. There is of course Rufus Sewell, who is lovely.

I am a massive LOTR fan... but even I wouldn't go for Peregrin or Pippin. It's also a bit 'My father being Pirrip...' etc.

monsterchild · 29/07/2012 15:34

I like Peregrine, like the falcon, but he may develop a strange love of pigeon....

I know an Arthur, but his nickname is A-Bod (first syllable of his last name) Hmm

We are also trying out names for our first child, and I'm pretty sure he's going to be called about 12 different things, if my nicknaming of cats and dogs is any indication!

Ruprekt · 29/07/2012 15:30

I love Arthur but with Thor as a nn! I would not be brave enough to have Arthur though.

Caspar - little ghost

Rufus is great!

Peregrine is just awful and I cannot imagine ANYONE wanting to be called Pip.

My vote would be

Theo
Rufus
Alfio (DH is italian!)

MagdalenaAlec · 29/07/2012 15:29

1 - Caspar: love it. DH is Caspar but gets Casper very often (but that may be an American thing). I call him Caz. Alternative: Caspian (if you want to avoid the "friendly ghost" association)
2 - Arthur: like it but I believe it is becoming a bit popular. I know one who goes by the nn Ari. Also love Arthus (medieval Arthur).
3 - Peregrine: like it but not keen on nn Pippin (prefer Perry). One of my DN is a Percival (nn Percy, Pers), perhaps it could be shortened to Pippin too?
4 - Rufus: not keen.

TheCatInTheHairnet · 29/07/2012 15:28

Pippin?!!!!! Oh dear Lord....

Pumpster · 29/07/2012 15:26

I hate them all, maybe I am not posh enough!

I have a Jacob. The dog is Milo and the guinea pig is Stanley. Any use? Grin

PorkyandBess · 29/07/2012 15:21

I love Arthur, Rufus and Caspar although I know a dog called Caspar..

Peregrine is a bit poncetastic. Pippin is a dog or a hamster.
