Mercedes?

I'm starting to really like this name. And of course it always was a girl's name (the car being named after someone's daughter).

But is it actually possible to get past the whole car business? Would you be subjected to a lifetime of uninformed people hoiking up their judgey pants?

lovely name but definitely chavtastic.... it's right up there with the chardonays, armanis and chanels!

VolAuVent · 29/07/2012 11:54

I don't like it.

TuesdayNightClub · 29/07/2012 10:09

I like it and particularly the NN Mercy. I wouldn't use it though particularly as I drive one as I'm just not brave enough. On the right girl it could be great.

In saying that, I've always loved Elise and the few people I've mentioned it to have mentioned the car connection - I would still like to use it.

Annunziata · 27/07/2012 15:42

Of you (and your partner) like it, go for it.

Marcella is similar?

honeytea · 27/07/2012 15:06

Personally I can't separate the name from the car, I'd opt for something with fewer car connotations unless it has a really important meaning to you.

TalHotBlond · 27/07/2012 13:51

I wouldn't.

I loved the name Portia when pregnant but couldn't bring myself to use it for similar car/chavvy connotations even though the spelling/pronunciation is off.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 27/07/2012 13:42

Dolores? Personally I don't care for that for the meaning, but it's similar. I bet there are others.

UnimaginitiveDadThemedUsername · 27/07/2012 13:37

You could use it as a middle name? Is it the sound or the meaning you like?

It's the sound of it. Mercedes. I've never really thought about it before and I'm not bothered about the cars particularly - it just jumped into my head a couple of months ago and it's just gone from there.

Annunziata is quite nice as well, although that conjures up a Spanish girl in a Confirmation dress with her hands in prayer.

Thank you :)

LRDtheFeministDragon · 27/07/2012 13:20

Oh, it's your real name?! Wow.

How beautiful.

Boggler · 27/07/2012 13:20

I think it's a lovely name But only if pronounced correctly, I would hate it if my lo was being called the same way as the car, make sure you can say it correctly otherwise you're going to look a bit dull.

Annunziata · 27/07/2012 13:19

Thank you! It's grown on me as I've got older. I actually go by my middle name though.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 27/07/2012 13:17

Ooh, hello! Smile

It is a gorgeous name. I just love it and I love all those old paintings of the Annunciation too, so it has lovely resonances for me. But sadly ... no, I couldn't use it!

Annunziata · 27/07/2012 13:15

Yay someone likes my name Grin

Annunziata · 27/07/2012 13:14

I think you'd need a Hispanic surname.

RubyFakeNails · 27/07/2012 13:13

People like Gladys? Shock Has mn been invaded by the bowling club?!

LRDtheFeministDragon · 27/07/2012 13:13

You could use it as a middle name?

Is it the sound or the meaning you like? If it's the meaning, you could probably bung in into google translate and get loads of similar girls' names as it would be common I think. Or maybe people can suggest similar sounding names?

(I have sympathy, btw, as I have a soft spot for Annunziata as a name and there is No Way In Hell DH would let me use that, I know! But it sounds so nice ...)

usualsuspect · 27/07/2012 13:13

True, it is an old name.

I'd use it OP if you like it.As I said maybe it depends where you live, because no one would bat an eyelid where I live.

UnimaginitiveDadThemedUsername · 27/07/2012 13:11

I suppose MammaTonic is right - it is too entrenched in our collective bank of cultural knowledge.

Which is a shame because it is a nice name.
As is Candida, but let's not go there.

I just want to add that depending upon the school she goes to I can see all sorts of jokes being thrown at her like "Mercedes I bet you like to be taken for a test drive" etc.
Someone else just hit the nail on the head, let these comments be a warning for what might come.

marge2 · 27/07/2012 13:05

Would it be pronounced Merced-ez or Merced-eez?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 27/07/2012 13:05

mercedes is an old lady name! It's as a modern name that anyone might have reservations, usual.

usualsuspect · 27/07/2012 13:03

Everyone knows only old lady names are acceptable on MN.

Try asking about Gladys OP, the baby namers will wet themselves.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 27/07/2012 13:02

Hmm, I thought 'uninformed people hoiking up their judgey pants' was quite a nasty description TBH. But I accept you maybe didn't mean it that way, and tone is hard to get over the net.

Look, if you love it, use it. If you don't and are wavering, I guess there's various reasons not to use it and inevitably one of those is to do with the cars. You can compile lists of reasons not to use any name someone picks - what matters is whether those reasons convince you.

StunningCunt · 27/07/2012 13:02

Nasty comments are entirely apt, what's going to happen when Mercedes S-Class is at school? Better to be told now.
