Is Ezekiel just too strange?

My DP likes the name Ezekiel, I'm not against it in terms of how it sounds but I'm not sure about the connotations behind the name.

Has any one met/known a person called Ezekiel?

What about Elijah? It's also a biblical name and it's quite a nice one too. I like Ezekiel. As its a name that he loves you could always ask your guy if he would want to use it for a middle name?

MammaTonic · 23/07/2012 10:30

It's the "and you will know my name is the LORD!" line. All very apocalyptic.

But it's not a reason not to choose the name :)

Good luck!

Ezra is a great name.. I will suggest that one to DP.

I havn't seen pulp fiction in years, I don't really fancy rewatching it, I guess I can youtube the bit with Ezekiel.

I like it, but I am thinking of Samuel L. Jackson's line in 'Pulp Fiction' ... You know, the one he quotes before he shoots someone in the face?

Not that many children of baby Ezekiel's generation will think of that.

There's always Ezra, too.

zee is a great nn!

I love the name elijah but my OH has a cousin called Elias which is the Swedish version of Elijah so it would feel a little like name stealing.

thets a good point about the name Frej, it does sound like a fight. We do love the name Freja and obviously couldn't have a frej and a freja (if we had dc2 and it was a girl) frej and freja were brother and sister, but also gods so i guess they have different rules when it comes to sibling set names.

Ezekiel is a fantastic name imo. Very striking. I know a five yo Ezekiel whose NN is Zee, not Zeke.

He was ultimately a hopeful prophet; he predicted the destruction of the Temple and the exile in Babylon, but also an end to exile and the gathering of the Israelites back in the promised land.

With the popularity of Freya, a girl's name, I would avoid Frej. Plus a fray is a fight.

oldgreyknickertest · 22/07/2012 23:33

And the wheels within wheels.

I think Ezekiel is great. Not so keen on Frej as the name used in English speaking places and people here won't know how to say the j. But do like Ezekiel Frej as a combo!

I beg to differ with Napdamnyou: there's some great bits in Ezekiel such as the valley of dry bones (dem bones, dem bones, dem dry bones etc), making a heart of stone into a heart of flesh, the river of life - a lot of it is very poetic. I think it's a good name - but how about one of the other prophets such as Elijah (who healed people and went up to heaven in a fiery chariot) or Elisha??

3boysgirlontheway · 22/07/2012 23:15

DD would have been called Ezekiel if she had been a boy. I love it!

P.s. heard someone shouting 'Abednego!!!!' at their child in Tescos recently... That might be even more out there, as far as biblical names go!

This is a well known game and makes Tesco Shopping a lot more fun. Choose most ridiculous name ever, scream ridiculous name at DC as you wander around Tesco's. Await amusing Confused Shock Hmm from other shoppers.

LuellaLovesLavender · 22/07/2012 21:21

I think it is a beautiful name, I dont know of any. though wasnt there an Ezekiel in Neighbours who got called Zeke!

Napdamnyou · 22/07/2012 21:06

Micah, even, stupid ipad

Napdamnyou · 22/07/2012 21:06

If he likes prophets Joel, Amos, Michah, Daniel, Hosea...

honeytea · 22/07/2012 20:58

wop I hadn't actually considered that I have nephew called zach, so zach and zeke could be a bit much.

I feel so mean because my DP is so happy with himself for finding a name that he loves. It is super rare in Sweden only 22 people have it as a 1st name, I think DS might have to spend the rest of his life spelling his name.

I think I will keep it on the list for now and try and push other options..

Any one for Frej? He's a norse god, Freja's brother.

Maybe I should just choose a nice normal name like joe!

I know one, again Zeke for short. I don't think it will date - the nn has been around for ages. The Zeke I know is in his 20's.

MirandaGoshawk · 22/07/2012 20:55

Wop - that's brilliant!

WopBopALooBop · 22/07/2012 20:52

I like it! Don't think Zeke is any weirder than Zach was before it came really popular this time round really.

There was a boy in Neighbours called Zeke about 10 years ago! But that's the only one I've heard of personally. Oh, and the Ezekiel mentioned in the song Cell Block Tango from Chicago.

rookiemater · 22/07/2012 20:48

Yes

MirandaGoshawk · 22/07/2012 20:41

I like it.

But then I love many Biblical names. (But not all. Abishag, anyone?)

Napdamnyou · 22/07/2012 20:38

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Ezekiel

A minor prophet from the time the Israelites were exiled in Babylon, his visions were about the destruction and rebirth of the temple and the people of Israel. Lots of veery strange and hard to understand visions, almost hallucinogenic in how they come across (so there has been interest in the prophecies from stoners and conspiracy types who think he is writing about aliens visiting earth...

DidntChaKnow · 22/07/2012 20:34

I know and 8 year old Ezekiel but he has always been known as Zeke, I like it! It's unusual but not really out there IMO.

is it a biblical name? That was my first thought upon hearing it but no negative connotations.

My Argentine nephew is called Ezekiel. It is a popular name over there. Its a lovely name.

NeedlesCuties · 22/07/2012 20:31

I like it! Maybe a little too out there for me (as I live in quite a boring area of a small country), but I do love Old Testament names and have used Biblical names for each of my DC :)
