I simply cannot make up my mind there is so much choice out there! I seem to like granny chic names or something a little quirky! So this is what we have came up with could you please rate them!! Thanks in advance.....

Clementine nn CiCi
Violet nn ViVi
Beatrice nn BiBi
Juno
Jemima but hate Jem or Jemma maybe nn MiMi
Penelope afraid this may get super popular thanks to the Kardashians

Agree with Minipie and Coconutty's assessments.
She will be called Clem/Clemmie and Jem/Jemi by some people at some point.
My order of pref would be:
Violet
Clementine
Penelope
Jemima
Juno

The shortenings are horrible. They sound like dogs names or something. But the names themselves are lovely :)

2 of my DCs have names that I would prefer not to be shortened but I can live with it -I would avoid those that I wouldn't want to live with
E.g Thomas fine, Edward not. We are all different some people have an Edward and always intend to have Ted or Teddy whereas I dislike them intensely.

Nobody has ever attempted to call my Jemima 'Jem' or 'Jemma'. I think if they did I would probably ask them not to as I really don't like those either. It doesn't seem to have occurred to anyone to shorten it though.

Exotic and Remus totally see where you are coming from your experience was that you choose to go with a nn and my experience was that I didn't......each to their own! I think from what you are saying is the best you can do is pick a name that you love which has nn potential that you also like and hope that they don't go from Clementine to CiCi to Neveah!!!

Nope, I'm not saying that all children will inevitably get a nn/shortening of their name - just that parents pretty much have to put up with it if they do!

And it deffo depends on age - I went through about 8 different variations in my teens, trying to find something which I felt identified me as me, iyswim.

Love Penelope, Beatrice and Jemima. I quite like Bibi as a nn, and Cici, in fact, but as a pp mentioned, I think of it as a nn for a name other than Clementine - Cecily, Cecilia, etc. But nice names - best of luck with everything!

There is only one point-choose a name that you like and it will most probably be fine, but just be aware that you can't control it. I loved the name Edward, but I can't stand any of the many nicknames so we chose something else.

It depends how old your DS is at the moment. I didn't get a nickname all through school, I suddenly decided to have one when I was 18yrs.

Remus....your picking me up wrong I don't mind if they decide to call themselves something different but NOT every child does decide to pick a nn for themselves my other children didn't! I never ever got called anything other than my given name, so it's not a given that a child will definitely get a nn at all! It just seems to me that your saying they will definitely get given a nn and thats not a certainty either! That's my point! Maybe it's a sore point for me.....you see when I was naming my son my mother made a big deal saying oh they will never get called x everyone will presume its y...if you get my drift! Well let's just say I was 100% correction that case!

That was why I was commenting, Remus-just stating facts. I would have thought it helpful because you can then decide to go for it anyway or choose one where you find all the nicknames acceptable. If I was to have a nickname for DS1, which I haven't,it would be a different one from the one he uses. After that experience we called DS2 a name that can't be shortened and he gets called something else entirely!

Your names are all quite nice, especially Violet and Clementine, but the NNs are awful IMO.

Don't understand why you are being so insistent that YOUR child will be the only one in history to call itself exactly what you want it to call itself at all times tbh. I am a teacher too, and the mother of teenagers, one of whom decided just about as soon as she could speak that she would call herself the variation of her name which is the one I'd wanted to avoid. So what? That's what helps to make her an individual instead of just a mini-me. It really doesn't matter.

But choose Violet anyway, because that is the prettiest. :)

Exoticfruits as I said before on I previous post I will agree to disagree so it can be left at that! Oh and I don't know if you have seen from my previous posts I am actually a teacher also so have plenty of experience with these things! Thank you for your perspective though all of this gives me plenty to consider when making my decision.....if I can ever actually make my mind up Confused

I like your name choices. Jemima, Violet and Beatrice were in my short list but were vetoed vehemently by DH :( hope you get to use one of them!

As a teacher I can tell you that you have no control! The DC will always have control - e.g the Jamie that I knew announced at 8 yrs that he was James and he has been ever since. My DS liked his nickname and everyone called him by it- except me.
If you can persuade your DC to agree with you then you are home and dry.Smile

We will agree to disagree I thnkWink however I do accept for some people that is absolutely the case! It's just from personal experience that I am speaking eg with my other children who haves names that can be shortened and are in school but because I always encouraged them not to they have not! I am sure though I am the exception rather than the rule! Hopefully this little one won't be rebellious! I think as other posters have said picking a name that has a nn I also like is the best way to go! Smile

You have to accept that you can name the DC, but after that you have no control at all! I am just about the only person to call DS1 by his full name and DS2 has been called his surname by his friends since he was about 7 yrs. Both like it. It is pure luck if your DC thinks the same as you!

Child will call itself, and get its friends to call it, whatever the heck it wants once it is at school - however much you want to control it!

Love Violet but think Viviv sounds a bit silly and contrived, sorry.
Beatrice is nice with Bea as nn.
Don't like Clementine/Cici at all, sorry.

Coconutty I'm actually a teacher also and we respect the wishes of the parents. But I'm in rural Ireland and I suppose the numbers are small in the school so it's easy to do it! But we have had issues with other children trying to shorten names and the rule was if it was heard it was to be stopped by staff! Actually we had one case where a student had picked some nickname for themselves and that was not allowed.....this I found a step too far personally!
