Hi All,

What are your opinions on Moira? It used to be quite popular here in Ireland years ago but not so much in recent years-pronounced Moy-ra. Thnaks

It's middle name after my Irish Granny. I think that says it all really.

What about Moya?

MrsJohnDeere · 17/07/2012 21:26

Makes me think of the horrible girl in Malory Towers.

I find it hard to imagine a baby or toddler called Moira, somehow.

amck5700 · 17/07/2012 21:22

much prefer Mairi...........or Lorna maybe which has a similar sound without the old lady vibes.

SecretNutellaFix · 17/07/2012 14:44

Hell, NO!

My personal feelings are somewhat clouded by manager who is a Moira.

redrubyshoes · 17/07/2012 14:41

I put it in the same box as Linda, Pauline, Valerie, Sonia etc. Middle aged.

PetShopGirl · 17/07/2012 14:28

It always reminds me of the baby Linda didn't love in The Pursuit of Love by Nancy Mitford.

squoosh · 17/07/2012 10:57

Granny without the chic

chocolate that description rings a bell with me too! And there is big, sporty, bad-tempered Moira in Malory Towers.

I do think it is reclaimable though - I can imagine a wiry, dark-haired, tough little Moira.

campergirls · 17/07/2012 09:11

It's a bit of a stretch to say it makes you think of Myra Hindley!

MrsHelsBels74 · 17/07/2012 09:07

My mum is Moyra so I'm afraid it is forever linked with a slightly batty women (I do love my mum but she is nuts Grin)

I like Moira, though tend to think as a classic Scottish name but that's a good thing Smile not outlandish but there's unlikely to be lots around, friend has just used it as a middle name for her dd after an Aunt- who is great funny and clever...

MammaTonic · 17/07/2012 08:58

I'm sorry, OP, I'm not keen on Moira. I agree with what was said upthread about the name not really being suitable for a youngster.

I knew a 17-year-old named Morven a couple of years back, which is another name that I don't think suits a young girl. It never seemed to 'fit' her, IYSWIM. I would choose something a little funkier.

HTH.

Prefer maire or Maura. I'm Irish and have never met a Moira, very unusual spelling.

Popoozle · 17/07/2012 00:58

BigHairy - a 'darn rotter' perhaps?

I'm afraid Moira also reminds me of an older Scottish lady - nothing wrong with the name but I wouldn't use it for a baby. Sorry.

VolAuVent · 17/07/2012 00:47

A middle-aged lady's name.

BigHairyFlowers · 16/07/2012 23:42

Makes me think of the right cow in Malory Towers. Or whatever the Enid Blyton for 'right cow' is.

Viviennemary · 16/07/2012 23:42

I was at school with a Moira and it was old fashioned even then. She was very brainy too!

Springforward · 16/07/2012 23:39

Also makes me think of Mairaed (which I have probably spelled wrongly...).

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 16/07/2012 23:35

I prefer Máire, the "oy" sound in Moira is very harsh imo

tara0202 · 16/07/2012 23:30

Loads of middle aged moira's in Scotland so that's all I see when I hear the name.

Springforward · 16/07/2012 23:23

I love it (family member). I also like Monica, which is quite close to it.
