Belle
Dulcie
Elise (to rhyme with 'geese')
Idalia (i-DAR-lee-a)
Mia (MY-a)
Valentina.

Half are my favourites, half are my husband's. We are having a difficult time deciding. Would love to know what you think of our list. You can be as honest as you like, we can take it Grin.

Thanks.

We don't live in the UK and my DH isn't British, so I guess we have a bit more creative licence than most.

Ecgwynn, your comments really made me laugh Grin

Love Elise and like Belle as a nn for Isobel.

Don't like Dulcie or Idalia.

You might like:

Hester
Hermione
Vivienne
Melissa
Elinor
Marianne

Belle-I think it's a fat girl's name.

Dulcie- Another fat name.

Elise (to rhyme with 'geese')- A nice name, but would you have to tell everyone how to pronounce it?

Idalia (i-DAR-lee-a)- Again, pronunciation might be difficult. This isn't a common name round these parts. It would seem a bit pretentious if you and DH only have British roots.

Mia (MY-a)- I associate it with a slutty girl, sorry.

Valentina.- Nice and unusual, but again pretentious if you and DH only have British roots.

Sorry for being so mean :(

exoticfruits · 29/07/2012 10:00

No-but Susannah is lovely.

GemmaPomPom · 29/07/2012 09:49

Thanks everyone. DH has just added another one... Savannah. Do you like it?

Of your final four I love Elise. I wouldn't need to be told how to pronounce it.

I do think that Valentina is a lovely name but really dislike the nicknames Val and Tina.

Dulcie has 'Dul' in it so not keen. Idalia I've never heard of and would prefer it pronounced without the 'r'.

kickingKcurlyC · 29/07/2012 08:56

You picked my favourite three, plus Idalia, which I don't like.

I'd knock off Elise next myself, just because the last baby I know born was called Elise, and I seem to see it quite often here...

Of the other two, hmm. Can't decide. Dulcie and Valentina are both very pretty.
What would the nicknames for Valentina be? I don't really like Val or Tina...

Declutterbug · 29/07/2012 07:39

Still Elise Smile

GemmaPomPom · 29/07/2012 06:39

Sorry to appropriate yet more of your time, but we are now down to four:

Dulcie
Elise
Idalia
Valentina.

If anybody has any comments on our shorter shortlist, or would like to add to it with any suggestions, please go ahead.

Thanks Smile

Sorry but Belle Dingle from Emmerdale springs to mind and so do the Disney princesses.

Sorry, I don't know who any of these people are.

We were going to call our daughter Maya, pronounced Mya, but completely changed our mind on the day of her birth and called her Hannah!

I like Belle on your list but not keen on the other names.

I like Freya
Isla
Dinah

A lot of the girls names i like seem to end in ah or a!

jkklpu · 18/07/2012 12:14

Elise to rhyme with breeze

shimmy0 · 18/07/2012 12:13

To me "Belle" could never be taken seriously before a job interview or at a meeting. Think of 20, 30, 40 years etc from now how professional does her name sound and look?

GemmaPomPom · 18/07/2012 08:25

Re. the spelling of 'Mia", I am not trying to be different, the name was my DH's suggestion and I just thought that's how you spell it. It seems it is actually spelt 'Maya'.

Cheriefroufrou · 17/07/2012 19:24

Belle - no
Dulcie - no
Elise (to rhyme with 'geese'), its sort of stunted, like it wants to be longer, like Elisia, doesn't roll off the tongue
Idalia (i-DAR-lee-a) - I would have no clue how to say it, with your pronounciation again its sort of stunted and doesn't roll off the tongue
Mia (MY-a) like but would say mee-ah, like maya, mya, maia too though
Valentina.

PaperBagPrincess · 17/07/2012 19:20

Valentina is gorgeous. My favourite by a mile.

Mia to me is Mee-ah. I like Maya or Maia though.

YvonneMcGruder · 17/07/2012 19:19

Definitely Elise, that's a pretty name. Don't like any of your other choices at all, sorry!

YoulllaughAboutItOneDay · 17/07/2012 15:14

No. No. Not a mouthful. Eloise is lovely. I know one who is about 5, but it's not common the way, say Belle/Bella or Mia/Maya/Maia seem to be now.

GemmaPomPom · 17/07/2012 14:56

I love Daisy, but fear it's a bit too common.

Really, really like Eloise - is it not a bit of a mouthful, though? Does it flow well, do you think?

Declutterbug · 17/07/2012 11:45

Eloise is lovely Smile

VolAuVent · 17/07/2012 10:43

Lucy
Emmeline
Annabelle (and you could have Annie or Belle as nickname)
Melissa
Elspeth (Elsie for short)
Adela
Sarah
Bethany
Christina
Victoria
Felicity

I can't decide whether I like Dulcie or not. Of your list, I would go for Maya (you, or, more to the point, your dd) would have a lot of explaining to do to stop people always saying "Mee-a" with the Mia spelling.

My niece is an Eloise, which I think is lovely, but she gets called Ellie, which is a bit more prosaic, I think, as a name.

GemmaPomPom · 17/07/2012 07:25

Oh, I like Eloise Grin
